'Simply Heaven' is a traditional Carolina saltbox beach cottage with incredible ocean views located just 2.8 miles up the beach from where the paved NC12 ends north of Corolla at the surf of the Atlantic ocean. A 4x4 vehicle is a must! Driving conditions on the beach vary hourly depending on traffic, weather and tides.
This quaint cottage has 3 bedrooms with ocean views, 2.5 baths, as well as an outdoor shower. A clothes washer and dryer is provided for your convenience. Television with over-the-air, local broadcast stations is available, as well as internet service. Your well-behaved dog is welcome for a fee, but two dogs max, no cats. The house has most of the basic necessities to make your stay comfortable -- pots and pans, utensils a charcoal grill, etc...
Thanks for looking! My name is Lane McIntosh. My wife and I reside in Charles Town, West Virginia when we are not enjoying "Simply Heaven" in Corolla, North Carolina. I am a graduate of Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia and am a professional in the real estate industry.
Lane McIntosh purchased this cottage in 2006
In 2006 I was on a quest to find a 'fortress of solitude' to occasionally alleviate life's trials and tribulations. I wanted a place that offered peace, solitude, limited commercialization and spectacular beauty -- but not too far from essential necessities and amenities. After visiting countless properties in the Mid-Atlantic and the South, I stumbled upon 'Simply Heaven' by chance. My first time driving up the beach to the house almost left me speechless with all of the natural beauty. As I arrived at the house, the yard was filled with wild horses. I half-jokingly asked the seller if he had everything put on display to secure the sale. Within seconds of looking out the windows, I knew that this was the place for me!
What 'Simply Heaven' lacks in size it makes up with views and scenery that many houses ten times its size do not have. If you're looking for a relaxing family atmosphere with ocean and beach views from every bedroom, Corolla's famous wild horses, deer, fox, dolphins or an occasional sea turtle, you will find it here. If you're looking for fast food, convenience stores, wild nightlife, you will not. But! 'Simply Heaven' is located just 2.8 miles up the beach so you are far enough away but just close enough.
The rental was clean, roomy with all the necessities. The top living room/kitchen floor has two sliding doors and huge windows to enjoy the ocean view and the grazing wild horses. We enjoyed coffee every morning sitting on the picnic table provided on the top deck watching the sun come up. Appliances in the kitchen were up-to-date and the dishwasher provided a break in the dish drudge. The master bedroom has a nice, firm king size mattress. Two full baths on the bedroom level were convenient along with the half bath on the living room floor. There is an outdoor shower on the bottom deck with cold and hot running water to shower after a day on the beach. The owner provided a hose hooked up to a faucet so the beach equipment could be washed off and the sand and salt spray could be cleaned off our Suburban. Take binoculars so you can watch the horses, beach activity, and the ships going to and from ports in Virginia. This place is quite, remote and wild and we loved it. We learned to time our going in and out of the beach to town at low tides since it's easier to travel on a hard packed beach. Pack all your basics before leaving or purchase them in Corolla. Food, toilet paper, paper towels, dish and laundry soap, and Ice, don't forget ice to pack in our coolers for the beach. We didn't do this thinking we would go to the house, unpack, and then return to town for supplies. Be sure to leave early enough to manage the tides and supplies. We arrived late, dark, and at high tide and didn't want to risk traveling back that night. We received a special treat when we first arrived on the beach. A small herd of about 8-10 wild horses were walking in front of us apparently heading in for the night. It was almost like they were welcoming us and escorting us to the house. Don't forget to lower your tire pressure to 18 psi before entering the beach. We saw many stuck in the sand that didn't. The beach was well patrolled by the Sheriff's Department on ATV's and the three we encountered were very helpful and friendly. Our only disappointment this vacation was we had to leave Friday, a day early due to tropical storm Hermie arriving on check out day Saturday. With predicted sustained winds of 65mph and tidal surges we concerned about getting off the beach at the time of Hermie's landfall. The owner was very helpful with tips and clear directions. We highly recommend this rental and plan to return again and again.
We loved this house and the location! We felt very comfortable and it was plenty of room for our family and dogs. The drive to and from the house on the beach was fun but a little harrowing at times. Research and prepare to handle the beach and you'll be fine. I would highly recommend a portable air compressor for when you need to air up before heading into town.
You'll need to bring all the extras: towels, sheets, blankets, soaps, paper towels and cleaning supplies. Most of what is in the kitchen is fine to cook with however there is a set of very beat up non stick pots and pans that I felt were unusable. I would have rather had some regular pots and pans. The only other "complaint" but was not a huge deal to us was the Wi-Fi was not the best.
The house is air conditioned which worked perfectly. It also has an outdoor shower and a garden hose to clean off your car or whatever. The horses were around almost every day and that was just wonderful however beware the house is on the horse tour route and they are constant but I never felt they were intrusive.
We would go back in a heart beat! You wont be disappointed.
We had a lovely stay and would definitely go back. The experience of driving on the beach to get to the house was really cool and our boys loved it. We saw the wild horses nearly everyday of the trip.
Suggestion for future renters: make sure and plan ahead!!! If you plan right with your groceries you could literally not leave this beautiful house all week! And won't want to its so perfect!
This is a beautiful house in a beautiful location. We are a family of four, that included 2 preschoolers, and we brought our dogs. It was an adventure to drive out on to the sand to get to the house, and we brought in all our food for the week. We grilled fresh seafood a couple nights. We walked on the beach daily, the kids played in the surf daily, and I just loved sitting on the deck listening to the waves. With small children the washer and dryer came in very handy. We saw the wild horses daily. We drove up to 5 miles up the beach one day just for exploring and the kids had a great time looking for crabs and collecting shells.
A couple things made our stay less than 5 stars: We couldn't get the outdoor shower to work, nor the DVD player to work. But I have already contacted the owner and he said he would look into all the problems we mentioned.
If you are looking for a vacation with shopping and restaurants, this rental is not for you. If you want to get some peace and quiet and get away from civilization, this house is perfect! One thing I would caution about is if you have small children like I do, this is not a beach where you can just sit up on the sand and let them run and play. There is traffic on the beach going back and forth, so you must stay alert and explain to kids that they must also watch for trucks passing. That being said though, my boys loved watching big trucks drive up the beach.
A couple suggestions: Bring some Tupperware if you plan to eat at the house all week, there's none provided. There's a local fresh seafood place as you come through the paved section of Corolla--it's cheaper than the larger markets, and we got GREAT seafood for the grill. If you are not familiar with the area, there is a pull off for the wilderness trail shortly before you get to the beach driving. We used that stop as a good place to deflate and re-inflate our truck's tires. Several people fish from the beach, and the local bait shops on the paved section of Corolla are nice and helpful. You might just catch a skate like we did.
If off the beaten path is what you are looking for, look no further. 3 miles up the beach and we were "home" for a week. Private atmosphere, abundant wildlife, and awesome views made this a worthwhile trip for us. No hustle and bustle here, just a very quiet and relaxing environment. We are definitely coming back next year!
For the price we weren't expecting much, especially when taking into consideration the location to the beach and ocean. When we arrived, we found the house to be clean, bright and precisely as advertised. There are no extravagant luxuries, but we found it to be "Simply Heaven".
