About Lane McIntosh
Thanks for looking! My name is Lane McIntosh. My wife and I reside in Charles Town, West Virginia when we are not enjoying "Simply Heaven" in Corolla, North Carolina. I am a graduate of Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia and am a professional in the real estate industry.
Lane McIntosh purchased this Cottage in 2006
Why Lane McIntosh chose Fruitville
In 2006 I was on a quest to find a 'fortress of solitude' to occasionally alleviate life's trials and tribulations. I wanted a place that offered peace, solitude, limited commercialization and spectacular beauty -- but not too far from essential necessities and amenities. After visiting countless properties in the Mid-Atlantic and the South, I stumbled upon 'Simply Heaven' by chance. My first time driving up the beach to the house almost left me speechless with all of the natural beauty. As I arrived at the house, the yard was filled with wild horses. I half-jokingly asked the seller if he had everything put on display to secure the sale. Within seconds of looking out the windows, I knew that this was the place for me!
What makes this Cottage unique
What 'Simply Heaven' lacks in size it makes up with views and scenery that many houses ten times its size do not have. If you're looking for a relaxing family atmosphere with ocean and beach views from every bedroom, Corolla's famous wild horses, deer, fox, dolphins or an occasional sea turtle, you will find it here. If you're looking for fast food, convenience stores, wild nightlife, you will not. But! 'Simply Heaven' is located just 2.8 miles up the beach so you are far enough away but just close enough.

A beautiful place with great views disappointed in owner's customer service.
I had the unpleasant experience of aborting my trip after two days due to Hurricane Marie. It was not required according to the specific wording of the contract to have any money refunded. There was no offer of any days in the future to compensate my wife and I for our early departure. Mr McIntosh contacted me via VRBO to inform me that no refund would be considered due to no mandatory evacuation. He has yet to respond to the email below.
"I am at a bit of a loss as to how this is "fair to all parties". I am aware you are not required to give a refund unless a mandatory evacuation policy is ordered by Currituck County. I suppose this is more about what I feel you should be ethically compelled to do and not legally obligated to do. I have worked in Emergency Medical Services for 20 plus years and do not "panic" at the sign of bad weather. During my stay I received my information on the local weather from the National Hurricane Center and NOAA via internet.
As you know the adjoining county did have mandatory evacuation orders. The decision to leave was based on "significant beach erosion" warning for Currituck County. This warning stated that beach erosion would make travel difficult and coastal roads may become impassable due to 2-4 feet of coastal flooding. Please check your facts on this as it is historically documented and verifiable.
Also as you are aware the home which we rented requires you to use the beach as a road. The significant beach erosion warning had the potential to leave us with no exit and predicted 2-4 ft of water in the area of the home would have made driving dangerous. This is not the same as driving on a state maintained highway in an adjoining area. This is the same storm that devastated Puerto Rico just days earlier. This particular hurricane remained unpredictable throughout it's track. I am relieved to know that the damage was minimal. As you recall as a courtesy I offered to secure any items you may need secured prior to leaving. Also as you know this vacation was scheduled at last minute because Hurricane Irma literally destroyed the island of St. John which was my original destination. I did lose a substantial amount of money on that vacation. It would be my hope that considering the circumstances you would act in a way that you would want someone to act toward you in a similar circumstance. There are times Lane where doing the right thing trumps doing the required thing. I await your response."
The hurricane and storm policy for Simply Heaven is clearly illustrated both before and during the booking procedure through VRBO. We even highly recommend that you purchase travel insurance to protect your trip. Evacuations for the northern beaches are ordered by the county officials. By using this metric of a third party to dictate when a refund will be issued (via mandatory evacuation) eliminates any ambiguity between me, the property owner, and you, the guest.
You informed me on a Monday morning that you were vacating. I was surprised, as I was not aware of any impending danger to the northern beaches. I explained to you that Ocracoke and Hatteras evacuate because they are dependent on the ferry system and NC 12 South can be subject to ocean over-wash.The conditions down there can be vastly different. I also recommended that you monitor the Currituck County website for evacuation advisories if you were concerned. At this point you made no reference to seeking a refund. Nonetheless, you vacated the property and informed me on Tuesday or Wednesday that you had done so and asked if I would give a partial refund. I informed you that I would partially refund if the county implemented an evacuation order. That order never came since the storm stayed out to sea and never made landfall. From what I hear from my neighbors who were there, the weather was gorgeous and in the mid-80's for the week with the exception of one day that was rainy and windy.
I am truly sorry that your vacation was interrupted, but it is through no fault of anyone else's, but your own. The week that you stayed is one of the cheapest of the year. I think that we even discounted your rate because it was a last minute booking. It costs us several hundred dollars a week just for garbage and cleaning. We are in no position to offer refunds to guests who leave contrary to our stated policies.
I hate to have a poor review over this, but that's just the way it is these days when people do not get their way. As my teacher would always say, "When all else fails, read the directions."
All the essentials were there. Everything was only "surface" clean. House is dated and needs to be freshened up. Cooking utensils, dishes & cutlery should be replaced. A/C vents need to be cleaned. We had a maintenance issue which was handled the same day. Location was just spectacular for both the views of the ocean and seeing the Corolla wild horses. Loved the decks.
Simply Heaven Indeed
My wife and I rented this property for our honeymoon, and we had a wonderful time. We found this "quaint cottage" to be bright, airy, and clean with an amazing view of the ocean. Many mornings of our stay were spent on the top floor deck with coffee in hand, sitting in the comfortable chairs provided with the house looking out over the water. The sound of the ocean that close is very soothing, and I already miss it back in the 'real world'.
We used the kitchen to cook many of our meals and found it to be well appointed and completely usable. The only item we didn't find was a cutting board, but perhaps we just missed it. The outdoor shower and hose were nice touches to help clean up after a day on the beach, and the AC fought the humidity like a champ. The horses lived up to the hype - we saw them on several days, and they grazed in the yard for several hours on one of the days.
We had several interactions with the owner leading up to our stay, and during. The owner was always responsive and helpful - first by working with us to sort out a scheduling challenge when we booked the property, and then to assure us that the slight travel delays we experienced on our arrival would not affect anything else regarding our stay.
The other reviewers here (and the owner in the house notes) have noted the essentials on staying at this house - but the beach driving notes bear repeating. Bring a 4x4, air down your tires, and study the satellite views on Google Maps so that you know where you are going. My AT&T phone had very spotty service on the beach, but my wife's Verizon phone worked very well. We arrived just after a storm had passed through the area, at night, at high tide. I would strongly caution against that particular course of action as it made navigation quite a lot more difficult, but other than that the beach driving was reasonable.
We wish we could have stayed there for another month - a week just wasn't enough time. Looking forward to coming back!
Great views but poor maintenance
The house is located in a great area by the beach and the wild horses are close by. BUT, the house needs some serious upgrade and maintenance. Upon our arrival I realized that the house wasn't clean. The air conditioning upstairs is locked in so you can't change it if it get too hot outside. Outside and inside of the house was in poor condition. My husband and I rented this home based on the reviews. ( I don't know if the reviews are family members). It wasn't so much the furniture but the walls, ceilings and carpet, deck and stairs. It would not recommend this property for families with kids unless they fix it up to meet construction code.
I'm sorry that your stay at Simply Heaven did not meet your satisfaction. VRBO will not let me provide you with a similar negative review.
You made no contact with me during your stay to express your unhappiness. The only contact was to inform me that you had arrived in a two-wheel drive vehicle and that you got stuck in the sand. Big surprise! Aside from that, I only heard from you post check-out to inform me of several things, including the fact that you broke the picnic table and that the shifting sands have piled up against the bottom deck step, making the rise of the step out of code. Give me a break!. It's nice to know these things before the next guest arrives in an hour. Anyway, sorry I was not willing to offer you a full refund. Knowing these things now, I can have the maintenance company look into them.
Admittedly, Simply Heaven is not a perfect home and I make no promise to that effect. It sits on a sand dune...on a sandbar...on the edge of an ocean. It consistently gets pummeled by wind, sand and storms. The window of opportunity to make repairs in between guests is limited 8 months out of the year, but the maintenance company does its best in the time allotted while not intruding on guests' vacation. However, if there is a problem, please call the number on the sign that is attached clearly to the side of the house. Thank you.
Awesome Vacation getaway with amazing oceanfront views
We stayed at this house last summer and just rented it again. I am beyond excited! The house is a prime oceanfront vacation home. There are plenty of windows and a large picture window, so you basically have a wide panoramic view of the entire oceanfront on the top level. We had a thunderstorm roll in one night and it was just amazing to watch, while relaxing on the couch. We saw lots of shooting stars during our visit as well.
The house was clean and had plenty of dishes ans such in the kitchen. Nice quality pots and pans! We provided our own linens but that seems to be the norm in renting beach houses. Honestly, I'd rather have my own sheets. The master bedroom has it's own private walkway into the bedroom, very spacious and plenty of dressers and closet space. They provided comforters and the house decor is beachy! This house is definitely cared for! It is an older house, but that being said, is what we love about it. It's very fresh and open and has a rustic beach feel, not dirty and neglected.
We saw horses almost everyday and it's a very short ride to the beach, or you could walk. We take the truck and park on the beach all day.
The owner, couldn't be more friendlier! He was easy breezy to work with and always responded quickly. He has been wanting to do some renovations to the house, but the house is rented every week in the busy months, so time is limited! We love the house just the way it is!
Summer can't get here fast enough for us! I wish I could afford to rent it more than once!
The rental was clean, roomy with all the necessities. The top living room/kitchen floor has two sliding doors and huge windows to enjoy the ocean view and the grazing wild horses. We enjoyed coffee every morning sitting on the picnic table provided on the top deck watching the sun come up. Appliances in the kitchen were up-to-date and the dishwasher provided a break in the dish drudge. The master bedroom has a nice, firm king size mattress. Two full baths on the bedroom level were convenient along with the half bath on the living room floor. There is an outdoor shower on the bottom deck with cold and hot running water to shower after a day on the beach. The owner provided a hose hooked up to a faucet so the beach equipment could be washed off and the sand and salt spray could be cleaned off our Suburban. Take binoculars so you can watch the horses, beach activity, and the ships going to and from ports in Virginia. This place is quite, remote and wild and we loved it. We learned to time our going in and out of the beach to town at low tides since it's easier to travel on a hard packed beach. Pack all your basics before leaving or purchase them in Corolla. Food, toilet paper, paper towels, dish and laundry soap, and Ice, don't forget ice to pack in our coolers for the beach. We didn't do this thinking we would go to the house, unpack, and then return to town for supplies. Be sure to leave early enough to manage the tides and supplies. We arrived late, dark, and at high tide and didn't want to risk traveling back that night. We received a special treat when we first arrived on the beach. A small herd of about 8-10 wild horses were walking in front of us apparently heading in for the night. It was almost like they were welcoming us and escorting us to the house. Don't forget to lower your tire pressure to 18 psi before entering the beach. We saw many stuck in the sand that didn't. The beach was well patrolled by the Sheriff's Department on ATV's and the three we encountered were very helpful and friendly. Our only disappointment this vacation was we had to leave Friday, a day early due to tropical storm Hermie arriving on check out day Saturday. With predicted sustained winds of 65mph and tidal surges we concerned about getting off the beach at the time of Hermie's landfall. The owner was very helpful with tips and clear directions. We highly recommend this rental and plan to return again and again.
