I grew up in Southeast Michigan near Ann Arbor and went to school at Michigan State. After a number of years away I returned to live in my family home, an 1873 farmhouse where my great grandfather cleared the land. I have enjoyed the updates and remodeling that comes with the vintage of the house, but mostly appreciate the park-like setting in the area.
Richard Riggs purchased this house in 2013
I have enjoyed many trips to the Lake Michigan beaches and enjoyed the serenity of the water, dunes and breezes. The ability to observe the sunsets over the water with feet in the sand and to hear waves come ashore is an especially relaxing moment. To do so in an area which is notable for blueberries and close to other great shore communities a short drive away was particularly appealing to me. I hope you will come to appreciate this environment, as well! There are seasonal events and activities to enjoy from festivals for film and blueberry lovers, as well as year-round benefits of hiking and biking.
The proximity to the beach and lighthouse was an attraction to the area, and this house offered a great open floor-plan which will allow people to stay engaged and appreciate time together. A bicycle store is around the corner if you wish to rent bikes for a trip around town or down the Kal Haven trail. There are unique shops in South Haven and a short drive takes you to the Saugatuck community for even more shopping with a creative, artistic emphasis.
We stayed in the property with our adult children and young grandchildren. We were able to walk easily to the beach, downtown area, and many playgrounds. We chose to drive sometimes and found ample free parking there. There are grocery stores not far away. There were some toys and books for the kids, too. There were stools for small children to use to Reach the sink, camp chairs for the beach, and some beach toys as well. The front porch was huge and cool all the time. Both porches had gates to keep small children in. We'd definitely go back.
This was the perfect rental for what I needed it for. I turned forty this year and wanted to have family and friends come hang with me in my favorite Michigan beach town. The first part of the week I invited my 3 sisters and their kids, along with my mom, to come stay with me and enjoy the beach and the second half of the week I invited a few friends and some cousins to do the same. The house is very roomy. Although there really isn't technically room for 12 people unless someone sleeps on one of the couches. there are 4 bedrooms. 3 of the room have queen beds and one of those rooms also has a day bed in it. The 4th room has 4 twin beds (1 bunk bed and to twin beds). My niece and nephews loved that room. it was cute and cozy. There is a large deck on the front and back of the home which was nice to sit out on after it cooled off. The walk to downtown was just a hop skip and a jump which was really nice cause we walked in everyday and down to the pier to enjoy the awesome sun set. Loved that! There were only a few things that sort of bugged me about the house. 1) the upstairs bathtub shower drain is clogged, so when you take a shower the tub fills up with water. Gross! This was also like this last summer when I came to visit my cousins who had rented the same home. 2) There is a funky mild smell when you walk in the back door. I had to purchase air fresheners for the house. it seems to be coming from the laundry room area possibly. 3) the carpet in the sitting and TV room area is dirty dirty dirty and needs to be cleaned badly. no one wanted to walk around with out there socks or shoes on cause there feet turned black. 4) The dishes and silverware appeared to have been put away dirty. I had to wash everything before we used it. Besides those 4 things everyone enjoyed the house very much and if those minor issues could be cleared up this would surely be the perfect rental for just about anyone. I will definitely consider renting this home again in the future.
This is the third time that I have stayed at this house and have been so pleased each time. It is homey, comfortable, very clean and roomy! Has a lot of special little touches that even make it better! My entire family had a great time! The lighthouse, marina, down town shopping area, restaurants on boats and right by the water, as well as an amazing farmer's market which we visited 2x this week made the whole experience a memorable one. I would highly recommend this house for anyones vacation!
My children and their spouses fit comfortably in this incredible house. We are looking forward to next year, same time and place with our two new grandbabies too!
We had an amazing time at this home in South Haven! Richard was flexible with our schedule and was extremely easy to work with. We received instructions how to enter the house and were impressed with the home as soon as we walked in. The house was spacious and comfortable with plenty of room for all, the kitchen table accommodated our entire party and the kitchen had everything we needed! We thought that it looked smaller in the pictures so we were pleasantly surprised by the amount of space we had. The bedrooms easily slept all of us and the home was very clean. We walked up to the beach about 6 times over our stay of 2 days and it was an easy, enjoyable walk straight down the street. We walked up for pastries at the brown bread bakery (yummy!) and ate dinner at Clementines. Richard had left plenty of information about great things to do in the area and I wish we had more time to explore everything but the weather was perfect and the beach was calling our name! I would definitely recommend this home to a larger family or group of friends looking for an affordable getaway.
We booked this home for a girls birthday weekend and it was absolutely perfect. Home was very clean, nicely stocked with towels and kitchen supplies, and conveniently located just 2 blocks from town. Owner was very responsive to all my questions and we look forward to returning next year.
The South Haven area is historic as a maritime center. It still offers boaters a great marina setting with docking just a short walk to downtown. The beach is beautiful with a new children's play area and lovely sunsets. There are a variety of recreational opportunities including nearby golf courses, and summer rentals for water sports. The Kal Haven linear State Park is a hiking and biking trail starting from the beach area and proceeding into rural SW Michigan. As a starting point for regional exploring this property is a mile from the highway allowing an interesting visit to the Saugatuck/Douglas and Holland areas.
