|Minimum Stay||3 nights|
We call her Mabel. She's not fancy, but she's neat and clean and has everything that you might need for a weekend getaway, or a stay for as long as you like. Her lovely wooded setting has a slight view of Lake Sydney Lanier and is very peaceful and quiet. She has just been painted inside and out and also sports new decks, front and rear. Her master bedroom has a queen-size bed and it's own bathroom with a garden tub and shower. Separate from the master, are the other two bedrooms, with queen and full-size beds. The fully stocked kitchen should have everything that you need to prepare and enjoy daily meals, including a gas grill, blender, crock pot, microwave, etc. (There are also a number of nearby restaurants, just a few minutes from the house.) The family room is very open to the kitchen and bar area and has a wood-burning fireplace with flat-screened television and a DVD player for watching movies. (Cable, Internet, and Wi-Fi) She does not have fancy granite or hardwood floors, but she does have a coffee pot, stove, microwave, washer and dryer. The boat launch is just across the street and the circle driveway should easily accommodate a trailer, so definitely bring the water toys. There is plenty of room for your boat and toys. I have canoes and kayaks that can easily be used, if you would like. Did I mention the covered single-slip dock and the fabulous bass fishing?? Come see for yourself!
Relocating to Georgia in 1998 with General Motors, our family has really come to love the people and scenery that this gorgeous state has to offer. Growing up in Michigan, and moving around quite a bit, we fell in love with Georgia, where the countryside is amazing and each of the four seasons are uniquely beautiful. We are so fortunate to have beautiful Lake Sydney Lanier in our back yard.
Cathie Doerr purchased this cottage in 2012
Because she was too cute to resist!
Besides her single-slip covered dock, where you can fish, swim, park your boat, or just relax. The spectacular setting among the trees, where nature abounds and relaxing comes natural here. Whether it be reading a good book in the hammock, chilling on the back deck, or hiking along the waterfront, there is plenty to keep you happy. Go for a canoe ride, (or kayak) and enjoy the peaceful setting in the quiet cove, at sunrise, sunset, or anytime. Fisherman come from all around to catch here. Hang out on the deck and grill up the catch. There is a gas grill, table, chairs and umbrella, and even patio lighting for after hours. On cool evenings, a cozy up to the fire pit and roast some marshmallows with a roaring campfire. ...kind of like camping, just better!
Great place to get away an unwind for a
few days. Thank you Cathie for a great time an for the use of your kayaks, kids had a great time using them.
We loved having our dog! The decor was delightful and it was close to everything. High marks for the cottage, location and owner!
Maybel is comfy cozy and all the cool kids want to move in. This is a different review, for the dogs on vacation.
Dog friendly restaurants as of July 2016: In Cumming, there's Tanner's grill & bar, good food & brewery next door. Also Gasthaus Le Cafe, an authentic German place with an outside area for you and your pup. Also the Ridge. On Lake Lanier try Pig tales, the hubs favorite, order the brisket or ribs, their sister restaurant fish tales says they are pet friendly, lies, all lies, don't go. In Buford do go to Rico's World Kitchen, 2 hour wait at times, it's that good, go between 4 and 5. In Dahlonega, visit the back porch oyster bar, fresh seafood, outstanding. Also go to Bourbon St. Grille. In Alpharetta, visit the salt factory, a gastropub worth it's salt, hah! In Port Royale visit Pelican Pete's, nothing outstanding, but reliable pub food and your pup is welcome, same to be said for the Twisted Oar at the Holiday Marina. Great places for tired restauranteurs or other people too tired to cook.
Stayed a week and loved it. Split Plan with Beds and bathrooms for everyone. Everything was provided, dishes, linens, silverware, utensils, pots, pans, grille, etc. We needed nothing. Cathie should get the Decorator Award. Very cute "Jimmy Buffet" style accents everywhere. Great deck in back. Walk down to dock is easy. Walk back a little challenging( I'm 73). Grandkids had no problem. Cove location is great for swimming with no worries about boat traffic.
A short drive to dining and shopping for anything you can imagine. Several Lake Lanier Parks nearby.
Cathie lives right down the road, but we never needed to contact her. She already thought of everything! So glad we found this place.
My family just returned from a ten night stay at Mabel, and I want to begin by saying that Cathie is absolutely delightful and so very helpful!
We are a family of 4, so each kiddo got their own room - which was great!
The decorations in the home are so cute and whimsical that it made me want to ask Cathie if she'd come to my home 2 hours away and help me decorate a few rooms! 😃
We went in mid May, and it turned out that we had several rainy days which meant that we spent quite a bit of time inside just hanging out together. I was glad we had taken a big bean bag lounger bed because as a family of more than 2 or 3, staying inside for an extended period of time, there was a need for more comfortable seating.
There is about a 100 pound differential between my husband and me, and the master bedroom mattress wasn't comfortable. But we shared this honestly with Cathie, so she's aware of it. If this bed were used for just a few nights, or for just one person, I think it would be fine.
The bed in the room our daughter used was new, and super comfortable!
The towels, sheets, and all linens are SUPER comfy and smell so nice! 💗
We rented a boat from Port Royale and I can't recommend them highly enough! They are FABULOUS to work with! Whether you rent one from them or you take your own, just be sure to take lots of bumpers, or confirm first with Cathie that the dock slip has been padded, as it needed some attention when we were there. Cathie is also aware of this.
The area around the home is SUPER quiet. Yay for quiet!! We stayed up until 2-3 almost every night and slept in late on those rainy days we had. We were so thankful for the serene surroundings!
Mabel is not a cabin, in that it's more lovingly appointed than many cabins we've stayed in. It's also not a luxury home. It's a wonderful middle ground between the two.
While you will have your own dock, (and I'm told the fishing is awesome off of the dock) you might want to know that you'll need to walk down a grade to get to it. Consider it a Thoreau type walk through the woods. 😃Mabel is not waterfront, but the quiet cove more than makes up for that...and I don't think you'd find waterfront at this price anywhere on Lake Lanier.
The cove that the dock sits in is very remote and quiet, which we also loved.
I want to stress again that Cathie is so helpful and even graciously lent us her kayaks. She's an amazing hostess.
Thank you, Cathie...for everything!
Bring your boat or rent one at one of the many marinas close by (Port Royale is four miles down the road and several others are close by: Aqualand, Habersham, Gainesville and Bald Ridge are all marinas close by.. Lake Lanier Island Waterpark is within 20 minutes by water or land. It offers a family fun-packed day with beaches, water slides, zip lines, kiddie and wave pools, restaurants, etc. while Sunset Cove has live music, concerts, golf and boat docks. It is a happening place all summer long, while boats tether up to have fun and enjoy the scenery. The Dawsonville Outlet Malls are within ten miles of the house, and features many of the stores that you love. If peace and quiet is your thing, venture up just a few miles further and see the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains, take a scenic railway tour, white-water rafting, rock climbing, great hiking and waterfalls, or simply ramble among the small towns just north of us like quaint Dahlonega's town square, where you can pan for gold, or visit the town of Helen and go tubing or gem-grubbing, ...maybe even visit a winery or two. Save a few days to head downtown to experience the fine city of Atlanta, where a number of options are waiting including: the Fox Theater, a Braves or Falcons game, great concerts at Chastain or Philips Arena, the High Museum, Georgia Aquarium, Botanical Gardens, Zoo Atlanta, Centennial Olympic Park, Hardrock Cafe, CNN Tower and World of Coke or even Six Flags. ..or, just relax and enjoy the bass fishing, ...some of the best right here in our quiet little cove, just a stroll away.. We just added a new fire pit for those cool evenings. The colors are amazing in fall time too!
