Lakefront with Covered Dock, Sweet Mabel. Cute & Convenient!!

Bedrooms 3
Space 1,000 sq. ft.
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

3 Bedroom, 2 Baths, Sleeps 6

We call her Mabel. She's not fancy, but she's neat and clean and has everything that you might need for a weekend getaway, or a stay for as long as you like. Even with the lake being down, the dock still has plenty of water! The single-slip covered dock can be used for your water toys, or just fishing and sunning. Her lovely wooded setting has a slight view of Lake Sydney Lanier and is very peaceful and quiet. She has a large deck in the front and in the private back yard. She even has a fire pit for cool evening camp fires. Her master bedroom has a queen-size bed and it's own bathroom with a garden tub and shower. Separate from the master, are the other two bedrooms, with queen and full-size beds. The fully stocked kitchen should have everything that you need to prepare and enjoy daily meals, including a gas grill, blender, crock pot, microwave, etc. (There are also a number of nearby restaurants, just a few minutes from the house.) The family room is very open to the kitchen and bar area and has a wood-burning fireplace with flat-screened television and a DVD players in living and master. Of course, we have cable, Internet, and Wi-Fi. She does not have fancy granite or hardwood floors, but she does have a coffee pot, stove, microwave, washer and dryer. The boat launch is just across the street and the circle driveway should easily accommodate a trailer, so definitely bring the water toys. There is plenty of room for your boat and toys. I have two kayaks that can easily be borrowed, if you would like. Did I mention the covered single-slip dock and the fabulous bass fishing?? Come see for yourself!

About Cathie Doerr

We love Georgia, and especially Lake Lanier!! Mabel is just a way to enjoy the lake and share with others. I hope that you can come and see for yourself. :)

Cathie Doerr purchased this cottage in 2012

Why Cathie Doerr chose Lake Lanier

Because she was too cute to resist! What a great private setting in a small town feel neighborhood, and yet Publix, restaurants, and shopping are only a mile away. The Blue Ridge Mountains are with 45 minutes! Visit one of the many small towns within the hour and enjoy tubing, shopping, and dining in these small tourist towns. So quiet, with nature everywhere. So lucky.

What makes this cottage unique

Besides her single-slip covered dock, where you can fish, swim, park your boat, or just relax. The spectacular setting among the trees, where nature abounds and relaxing comes natural here. Whether it be reading a good book in the hammock, chilling on the back deck, or hiking along the waterfront, there is plenty to keep you happy. If you don't have a boat and want to enjoy, just borrow a kayak or two and venture out to enjoy from on the water. Sweet! Enjoy the peaceful setting in the quiet cove, at sunrise, sunset, or anytime. Fisherman come from all around to catch here. Hang out on the deck and grill up the catch. There is a gas grill, table, chairs and umbrella, and even patio lighting for after hours. On cool evenings, cozy up to the fire pit and roast some marshmallows with a roaring campfire. My kind of camping!

Cute and comfy

  • 4 of 5

Overall it was a wonderful five days. We cooked most of our meals and had everything that was needed. The garden tub is a bit difficult to get in and out of. A handrail would really help especially my husband who is disabled. Some TLC would make this cabin even more appealing. The walk to the dock is quite steep but the deck is a very enjoyable place to gather and be part of nature. All in all we would recommend this cabin.

not what we expected

  • 2 of 5

What was described as a "slight view" of the lake was found to be quite a trek down a wide, community accessed, dirt path (frequently used by the neighbor in their loud, all-terrain vehicle), to a series of docks on a near-stagnant inlet. To access Mabel's dock, there is an indirect path via a narrow pass through the underbrush, only to find that the dock appeared to have not been used in quite a while, and certainly not treated with any degree of recent maintenance. The same was true for the back deck, as the volume of spider webs made it feel uncomfortable to sit out there. The cottage itself, is obviously well loved by the owner, who took great measures to label and decorate, but there is water damage due to years of use in the well worn bathrooms, and the entire cottage is in desperate need of repainting. The living room furniture although cute and trendy, is very well worn, and even damaged. Mabel is pet friendly, which I am not opposed to as I have two sweet rescue pups of my own, but the pet hair on the furniture and carpet gave the cottage the feeling of being unclean. We found many of the dishes in the cupboard were not washed well previously, and in need of being washed prior to use. The owner lives near to the cottage, and we had a continual feeling of being watched. As we pulled into the driveway, the front door was closed, but when I exited my car, the front door opened mysteriously, as though whoever was there exited out the back before being seen. As we packed up to leave, we also discovered that someone placed a dog leash in the front yard that had not been there previously, demonstrating that our departure was being awaited and observed. We stayed over Memorial Day weekend, so perhaps this was the first weekend the cottage had been opened, and a busier weekend, which always presents challenges. Just be aware that Mabel is not a cottage, but a double wide trailer, has no view of the lake (except perhaps if there are no leaves on the trees AND the water level is exceptionally high with the use of binoculars), and could use some TLC. None of these complaints were brought up during our stay as we were trying to give the young ladies of our party a girls' weekend experience focused on our time together; but they also noticed and commented on all the same short comings.

Owner's Response: Thank you for taking the time to write such a detailed review. Let me address a few things. I was actually in Florida for my niece's graduation, so I am not sure what you felt about continually being watched. The door is left unopened sometimes for new arrivals, so I am sure that was the case. Certainly if I had been there doing last-minute stocking or something, I would have welcomed you rather than slipping out the back door unnoticed. The lead has always been around the tree for use when folks bring there pets. It was not placed there to "demonstrate that your departure was being awaited and observed". I don't know what to say about the dock and the water. She has only a slight winter view of the lake, true, and it is a gentle walk to the water, (rather than steep like many). We share a path with the neighbor, (who does not live there and only uses it a few times a year), but I am sorry that they were there over the holiday weekend. The single-slip covered dock has 10-12 feet of water (even now when we are down 7') and is used on a regular basis. I just painted it last year, but I will definitely check it and see what looks un-maintained. It has a swim dock (side space), a swim ladder for lake access, a dock box to hold a few items so, I am not sure what you were expecting. The cove is wide and beautiful and never stagnant. As far as Mabel goes, I know that I say she is simple, no granite, hardwoods or stainless steel , but she is neat and clean and she has a coffee pot, toaster and crockpot. Since I had just emptied the cupboards and ran the dishes in the dishwasher, I am surprised to learn that you thought that you saw dirty dishes. I will definitely check this out as well. We have a very thorough cleaning crew, so this will be addressed. The couch and chairs are white leather, and the carpets were professionally cleaned just before your arrival. We actually take a lot of pride in delivering Mabel in clean and cute condition. I have been meaning to re-paint and add new flooring, but Mabel is booked solid and there has not been time, so I agree, she could use a face lift. You might actually enjoy Hope/#1046222. I have spent the last 18 months preparing for vrbo and everything is brand new. ..or try the Ritz.. In conclusion, I must agree that Mabel has had quite a long run and is looking rather tired. She will be retiring as of September 15th of this year and will be replaced by a real cottage. Thanks again. Better luck with your future travel decisions.
