About the property

Plan your next escape to ‘Cedarwood,’ a stunning rental on the Kapoho coast. With 1,600 square feet, it’s an ideal romantic retreat or getaway for friends. Luxuriate in lush surroundings, snorkel through coral studded pools, or read a good book on the private lanai. Enjoy a picnic at Ahalanui Hot Pond, where fascinating people-watching awaits you around geothermally heated natural swimming pools, or just explore the friendly streets of your Vacationland community.

Master Bedroom: King Bed | Bedroom 2: Queen Bed

Upon arrival, you’ll find yourself charmed by the refreshing atmosphere of this lovely retreat. Shaded by coconut palms and flowering foliage, the house is located at the eastern-most tip of all Hawaiian Islands, where trade winds deliver “virgin air” from across 3,000 miles of open water farther east. Step inside the well-appointed living space, take a breath and make yourself at home.

Your living room features ample seating for guests, large flat-screen TV, plus stunning views out many windows and sliding glass doors. An open-concept floor plan connects the dining room, where a table and comfortable chairs provide a natural gathering spot. Your fully equipped kitchen provides ample counter space with all the necessary cooking appliances.

Walking through the open den area, you’ll find two spacious bedrooms, each featuring windows looking onto the lanai and flowering greenery beyond. You'll have no problem settling in for a peaceful night’s sleep.

On the other side of tongue-and-groove cedar walls with many windows, the gem of this property is its wrap-around lanai. With plenty of seating, an outdoor grill and even a hammock, guests can relax to savor the sounds of birdsong and gently rustling leaves amidst colorful hibiscus, bougainvillea, plumeria, Tahitian orange, banana plants and mango trees. From the deck, if you’re quiet, you can sometimes see the neighborhood mongoose, Riki-Tiki-Tavi scampering toward his own little get-away nearby.

A five-minute stroll from the property will lead you to the friendly waters of Wai'Opae Marine Conservation Sanctuary, where you can snorkel in coral gardens with curious turtles and tropical fish. The tide pools are rich in coral growth providing a vast sheltered nursery for many young fish – the ecological significance of this happy marriage of warm tropical waters with long-collapsed lava tubes is nationally recognized in the public designation of Wai’Opae as a marine “Conservation District,” no fishing allowed.

Above the water line, you’ll find yourself exploring the pedestrian friendly streets of Vacationland and surrounding unmarked roads that lead toward neighboring orchid farms. Or maybe take a drive down Highway 137 (locally “Red Road”) to soak in the geothermally heated, spring-fed pool that’s splashed by ocean waves at Ahalanui Park, a mile away. Follow Red Road farther along Hawaii’s newest gorgeous coastline and stop to catch the scene at Pohoiki harbor before continuing a few more miles to walk in the ironwood forests above spectacular bluffs at MacKenzie State Park. At the end of the road near Kalapana you can hike a short distance to Hawaii’s newest black sand beach, following the trail over hardened lava left by Hawaiian goddess Pele when she covered most of that settlement 30 years ago. If you’re feeling adventuresome, you can rent a bike from Kaimu Rentals and pedal to an ever-changing viewing area maintained by U.S. national park personnel – depending on Pele’s mood that day, you can often see red-hot lava flowing into the sea. Wait until dusk if it’s Wednesday, and then check out the musical scene at Uncle Robert’s locally famous Night-Time Farmers’ Market.

In a different direction from Cedarwood (north and west toward Pahoa Town and Hilo) take a leisurely walk through Lava Tree State Park; or try horseback riding in the rain forests of the beautiful Jungle of Kapoho at Silver Crest Farms; or find out what’s up at Mauna Loa Nut Farm and Factory. Don’t miss Maku'u Farmers’ Market on a Sunday morning – you’ll find delicious fresh fruit and a tasty variety of local culinary creations there.

For a longer afternoon and the major reason many people visit Hawaii in the first place, there’s the Kilauea caldera in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park at 4000 ft. altitude. It’s four square miles surrounded by 400 ft. walls containing an active lava lake that rises and falls beneath its hardened surface, just an hour’s drive from Cedarwood. One of the most active volcanoes on Earth, it’s been erupting continuously now for 34 years. The national park offers terrifically informative maps and displays, amazing viewpoints, nature trails, the Chain of Craters Road and Thurston Lava Tube – a World Heritage Site and a major tourist attraction well worth visiting. The weather can be rainy and chilly at that altitude, so take a jacket when you go. But this is something to see. That volcano has produced a cubic mile of lava in 34 years, covering 50 square miles on the Big Island including the outskirts of Pahoa Town 3 years ago. It almost cut off the only route from Hilo to Cedarwood. It’s how these islands were formed; and it hasn’t stopped happening.

Great proximity to snorkeling & volcano!

  • 4 of 5

We appreciated the location, which was walking distance to Kapaho Tide Pools as well as other snorkeling options. The bike/hike into the volcano to see lava was spectacular. Thanks for a great place to adventure from!

Broomfield, Co

Pictures of unit not a true representation of the unit.

  • 3 of 5

The term “New” in the add refers to being new to Evolve Vacation Rental Network not being a “new” unit. The unit is an older unit and not in prime condition. Unit needs work and lacked necessities normally found in VRBO advertised units.
