Probably one of the best kept secrets in Italy!
We thouroughly enjoyed our stay in this wonderful place. The old village house has been lovingly and competently restored to the highest standards by its architect owners. It is essentially a very light house but shuttters and insect screens make it possible to keep it very cool and prevent unwanted bugs from entering. For cooler times there is central heating and a beautiful fire place / wood burner.
Patrizia, who speaks excellent English, has been extremely helpful and welcoming. She, in fact, looked after us throughout the two weeks, gave us a tour of the village, recommended restaurants and places to visit and even showed us the way to a secret bathing place - really absolutely invaluable! Perhaps, needless to say that she keeps the house immaculately clean.
The small town is a warren of ancient houses on a steep hill side with lots of narrrow lanes and steps - ideal for exploring in the evening. It has its own Farnese palace, a number of interesting churches and ancient fountains. Best of all, it is alive, inhabited by very friendly people who live there all the time and use the bar, baker, butcher, other village shops and restaurants.
But of course there is also plenty to see in the surrounding area, around Lago di Bolsena and also a little further in all dictions. There are amazing hillside towns and fortresses to be discovered as well as plenty of exciting evidence of earlier Etruscan settlements. Good walks should be possible during the cooler times of the year. We certainly will be back soon to experience more of this beautiful area.
Small village in the upper Tuscia bordering Tuscany and Umbria. It is 5 km away from Lake Bolsena and 10 from Pitigliano.
