A really nice house at SML

  • 5 of 5

We came to the lake for our first visit, over Christmas week, and thoroughly enjoyed staying at this house. The view is gorgeous, the area is convenient for exploring, the house was clean and had everything we needed and then some. We noted that there were plenty of things provided for families with kids, too. The area is quiet in the winter. We loved the screened porch--the weather during our stay was quite mild (a bonus!) and a bit rainy, but that screened porch allowed us to be outside when we weren't visiting museums and monuments, etc. Perfect! The hot tub was fun and oh so relaxing--our first experience with a hot tub, too. We loved watching the deer in the evening, and seeing the ducks and squirrels, and hearing the birds in the trees around the house. Very peaceful. I would definitely recommend the house to others who are looking for a comfortable and convenient place to stay while visiting Smith Mountain Lake.

Awesome location and house! And dock!

  • 4 of 5

I'm writing not only to review this place well, but to rebut the opinions of Kathy H. who gave this place a bad review.

This place is awesome. It's not brand new, but it's a lake house! Clean (not a single ant. Kathy, you have to be clean yourself to keep them away), comfortable and extremely well-located (just a few minutes from the Bridgewater Marina by boat or by car).

Our favorite place was the dock - it is a walk, so if you have people in your party who cannot make a steep walk, this place isn't for you, but if not, well worth it. It's on a small cove, out of the hustle and bustle of the main channel. There is furniture and a coffee table and a canoe and a paddle boat.

We also spent lots of time on the outside deck and the screened porch off the master BR. Grill was clean and worked fine - sometimes you had to light it 2x to get it going at full tilt, but once you did, no problem.

The dishwasher did have an issue, but nothing a bit of rinsing cannot deal with.

We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and would love to return the next time we come to SML.

Good location in a cove on the lake. House, however was dated, and not kept up.

  • 2 of 5

Although in a good area on the lake, the house was less than acceptable. Ants seemed to run the kitchen as we were constantly spraying, cleaning off counters, and having to find other areas to put kitchen supplies. The d/w did not clean dishes, sometimes taking 2-3 wash cycles to get somewhat clean, and the heat/dry cycle did not work. Vinyl floor had stains, frig was rusty and didn't stay closed. The grill was disgusting it was so full of grit and grime. And the overall outdoors (patio area) had not seen a hose or broom in quite a long time it appeared. The house needs to be updated, and although in itself is not a deal breaker, with everything else, we will be looking for another house next visit. Disappointing for the money.

Owner's Response: This review is from a disgruntled tenant who did not feel they should have been charged against their security deposit for leaving the mattress soaked in urine... The mattresses have been replaced and I believe the overwhelmingly positive reviews including from just prior and just after speak for themselves. Bonus to all this one is looking elsewhere next year.

Wonderful vacation

  • 4 of 5

Our family had a wonderful peaceful week. The house was well equipped for our stay. We spent days on the dock and in the water. At night, I introduced my 20 something kids to yatzee. The furniture was comfortable and the house clean. There was more than enough room for us. Our only question was how to turn on the path lights to the dock. Most definitely would rent this house again next year, I'm thinking for 2 weeks...........

Fantastic setting to get away from it all

  • 5 of 5

What a lovely, well appointed house for getting away from it all. This clean and well-flowing home sets the mood for comfort and fun. The living room wall of glass and the screened porch make a seamless transition from outdoors to in. Furniture is comfortable and in great shape. Kitchen has everything you could think of to make a feast - from roasting pan and rolling pin to grilling tools. Master bedroom with king bed, loveseat, fireplace, and walk out to porch is an excellent retreat for grown ups. Lots of fun additions - foosball table, board games, well-maintained hot tub, slide off dock into water, canoe, Blue-ray player, bench swing on lower patio, comfortable outdoor furniture by lakeside - all contribute to the retreat atmosphere. Something for everyone. Relatively gentle sloping path (a couple of steep steps at the end) from house to lake is much nicer than the near-vertical climbs you find at other SML houses. Fish were jumping, but we never got a nibble. Probably using wrong set up for the time of year. Close to a couple of wineries, grocery store, Bridgewater Plaza (drive or boat ride) if you want to get out. Lots of parking space. Easy and quick communication with owners. We will be back!
