About Helena Porter
I have lived in Coton-in-the-Elms very happily for 37 years. The people round here are friendly and welcoming. I love living in the country and enjoy walks and cycling round the lanes.
Helena Porter purchased this Cottage in 2009
Why Helena Porter chose Coton in the Elms
The cottage needed a total makeover when we bought it, but I'm a very practical person and was a great builder's mate and project manager! Being close to our home means is so useful for looking after the house and garden and being there to meet and greet our guests.
What makes this Cottage unique
On a lovely summer day the sun will shine in the garden from sunrise to sunset and it is so peaceful! At the end of the day, take your glass of wine to the top of the garden and catch the last rays of the sun and the sunset...it is lovely!

Very roomy Cottage ,ideal location for the Bearded Theory festival- Lovely welcome pack and the Log burner was a nice touch!
For the money they charge the place needs to be updated.
The beds all need to be changed as very very old carpet was smelling and towels where very crispy.
This is a traditional country cottage, clean, warm and comfortable as previous reviews can confirm.
I checked after a couple of days to see if my guests were okay and apart from arriving from another country feeling ill, there was no suggestion of discontent. They were here to spend time with friends over the New Year break but were not well for most of the time.
The next day the washing machine failed mid afternoon. This was on New Year's Eve. We went to the cottage immediately, removed it and did their washing at our house, taking it back later. Again we talked as we were dismantling the machine and as far as we knew all was okay. We rushed into Currys before they closed early for the holiday and bought a new washing machine, installing it the next day when they were out.
Regarding the price: New Year bookings are peak price. Check around, this cottage is the best priced self-catering accommodation for six people in the local area.
Very comfortable and homely
We have had a great stay at 50 Mill st! It has been a great place to return after to a full day of visiting family, friends and the many local attractions. We appreciated the home comforts especially as we have had to get over our long haul flight. Helena was very welcoming and thorough, and even had a few essentials for breakfast for us the morning after our late arrival. We would definitely consider a stay here on our next visit.
It is always lovely to welcome guests from abroad, who have found our cottage on the HomeAway site. I always put a few breakfast provisions in the fridge for guests, but it is good to know that it is appreciated by people arrving very late at the airport.
Love this cottage. Was great for our family visiting from Australia. Look forward to next time...
It is great to have returners to our cottage, having seen you a couple of years ago, and look forward to seeing you again in the future when you are next in the country.
Lovely cottage and welcoming host
Fantastic little cottage for a weekend getaway. Used as a base camp for nearby festival and had everything we needed and lots more we didn’t make use of.
I am glad the cottage was perfect for you. We are in a great location for many visitor attractions to suit all ages.
A well kept and well equipped cottage
We loved this place, it has everything a family could need and there is off street parking too.
Although the village is "off the beaten path", you have easy access to some major roads, it's perfect for exploring the area!
The owner was very helpful in accommodating our late arrival and answering questions.
Definitely will use again when the need arises.
The location of the cottage is one of its advantages. It is quiet and yet easily accessible to two airports, Birmingham and East Midlands. The motorway and other major roads are just a few minutes away.
I'm glad my guests were very happy with the accommodation and enjoyed their stay.
Here in the National Forest there is so much to do for adults and children. You can go to Thomasland at Drayton Manor Park, the National Memorial Arboretum, Calke Abbey (NT), Twycross Zoo, the National Brewery Centre, St Georges Park National Football Centre, and Conkers to name just a few. Our guests are constantly surprised at the number and range of interesting places to visit and other activities that are within a short drive of the cottage. Within 35 minutes drive you can be in Birmingham and nearer to home are Derby, Lichfield, Tamworth, Ashby de la Zouch, Swadlincote and Burton on Trent. The beautiful Peak District is north of here for a lovely day out. Coton-in-the-Elms and our cottage is ideally placed in a quiet village location with a friendly real ale pub, and small shop. We have many walks, cycling, fishing and horse riding nearby. Getting here is easy. We are right in the centre of the country and road links are excellent (M42 and A38).
