For years, my husband and I have searched for that "On Golden Pond" place... somewhere we could regroup and just be quiet. A place where we could leave electronics in the off mode and play kick-the-can with the kids by flashlight. In today's world, imagine finding a place where it feels safe to leave windows and doors unlocked at night. A place where you leave a fishing pole ready to go on the dock, and watch pilot boats pull large ships through the channel. Imagine watching fiery sunsets with a glass of wine in your hand as the kids throw rocks into the St. Lawrence River, in high anticipation of nightfall, when they can *safely* continue play outside until they're exhausted. This is that place for us. It felt like the entire island was ours. One afternoon, a short walk with the kids turned into a seven mile adventure; we didn't see another soul on the entire island. We were hot, sweaty, exhausted...it was heaven. As for the manor, all the buildings were tidy and well maintained. The cottage was lovely and perfect for our family. When the kids get older, they'll LOVE staying in the boathouse. We mostly stayed on Carlton Island. But on the few occasions that we ventured out, we found some nice shops in Clayton, and a couple local restaurants had good beer and burgers. Our only regret about staying at Argersinger Manor is that one week wasn't long enough. It's the kind of place where lifelong memories are made; our kids are still talking about it.
We have stayed at the Manor for each of the past three years. We always stay over my wife's birthday and we have discussed about taking different vacations, but when we talk about how relaxing it is here, it is unanimous. I have teenage boys and they are now totally bought into the "no electronics" week. We bond over board games, kayaking, nature hikes and the fabulous sunsets. The estate offers a great family bonding experience.
I was very apprehensive about renting a vacation home via online pictures, descriptions and reviews right from the beginning. This property looked amazing, but I kept my expectations in check because I just expected everything to be exaggerated.
Now that my vacation has come and gone, I can fairly rate this property and experience as a 10/10. The process was smooth, easy and very straight-forward. The property is amazing - far beyond what I had anticipated. Beautiful, clean, and private are the three key words that I would use to describe this property. Kenny (the property caretaker) was fantastic, completely available (but not too available) and he completely went out of the way for us.
The biggest downfall about the entire experience? That my expectations are now very high for future vacations and rentals... I am not sure this one can be beat!
We had an AMAZING vacation here. The boathouse is beautiful and the cottage is set up so you feel like you're living at home!! There were 4 kayaks for our use and we used them everyday. We rented the polaris and it was put to use going back and forth from the cottage to the boathouse. We fished off the dock and caught some perch and bass. Alex Bay is only 20 miles away. We drove there and spent the day seeing Boldt Castle and we went to the Boat Museum in Clayton, NY. Everything far exceeded our expectations. We had 8 people and there was enough space that we never got on each others' nerves and plenty to do. The water is beautiful! Beyond the best vacation we've ever had. Thank you Argersinger Manor!!!!!
We love the Estate. The views are endless and the property is extremely quiet. Our two teenage boys disconnected from everything but our family for an entire week. Phil (the owner) was great to work with and Ken the Caretaker is now beloved by our entire family. We spent more time in the water and on the dock and in the boathouse than in the house. This has become our requisite August vacation.
My initial reaction pulling up to the dock was - this is all just for us?? Wonderfully private space. The cottage is lovely and accurately explained in the listing. Has everything you'll need from a washer and dryer to an ice machine. Nice porch for coffee and reading. There are more than 20 Adirondack chairs on the property - on the front porch, at the fire pit, on the dock, on the boathouse balcony - encouraging you to sit down and watch the river! The men loved using the outdoor shower - showering each day with the sun shining on them - and I even tried it once!! The hot tub was used multiple times each day, especially at night to watch the big ships going by all lit up - really magical!
The boathouse is truly awesome - really, really cool!! We played pool, had nightly pitch games, and sat on the incredible boathouse balcony - the best seats in the house!! It provided a huge indoor area for the teenagers each night and when the weather was bad. Kids sat around the fire pit by the boathouse at least two nights, and used the outhouse - quite the novelty!!
Ken and Loretta were great - available when we needed them but not there when we didn't! Took us on a Ranger tour of the whole island when we first arrived. No problem helping us with the constant shuffle of parking our two cars, extra cars for visitors, and our two boat trailers for two weeks. Ken was literally just 15 minutes way if we needed something and quick to return questions sent via text message. The owner was very quick to respond to emails, returned the security deposit quickly, and Ken mailed us an item we accidentally left behind. The entire process was simple and professional - absolutely no hassles!
We boated, sailed, kayaked, hiked, read, played pool, and generally just relaxed!! We also took the ferry to Wolfe Island and Kingston for the the day. Convenient that there was (usually) American cell service! Made it easier to organize having friends come up, and of course the kids appreciated it, too!
