I love the Hayward, Wisconsin area and I adore our unbelievably charming cabin, Runamuk Roost. Runamuk helps me recall the fond memories of my boyhood cabin. Warm summer days of swimming, fishing and swimming with grandpa and grandma, mom and dad, cousins, siblings, friends, etc. Campfire sing alongs, roasting marshmallows, and talking with family and friends around the fire. You know: the good old days. Now that I am grown up I wanted to always keep that memory alive. That's why we bought Runamuk. It's the perfect design, on the perfect lot, in the perfect location, on the perfect lake. Half vintage log cabin lodge and half-bungalow, our home, Runamuk Roost, was built in the early 1960s as a small hunting cabin. Because the original structure was so full of charm, as we added on and renovated, we built around Runamuk rather than simply tear it down and start over. Throughout we tried to maintain the underlying design and character of the property by matching things like stain, varnish, woodwork design, etc. We also tried to stay true to the vintage feel of the original Runamuk by using locally harvested wood and quarried stone, all hand-crafted by local tradesmen. Inside Runamuk there are many special items. Some have been in our family for a long time while others have been acquired not so long ago but are themselves antiques or special. They include things such as a real “moose leg” lamp made from a moose my father-in-law shot. The animal pelts scattered around are from the local Hayward, Wisconsin area and the fish mounts are from those we pulled right out of the lake less than 200 yards from the dock. I am proud to say that my wife, Joan, did the re-design of Runamuk as well as all the decorating. Suffice to say she is very talented. Runamuk was certainly one of her favorite projects to do.
Joan purchased this Cabin in 1993

A cozy and wonderful getaway
We are four couples that spend a long weekend every year for a getaway. This year we spend it at Runamuk Roost and loved it. First of all, we had originally planned for last autumn, but due to an illness we had to postpone our weekend. Jim was very accommodating and we rescheduled for this past weekend. We were met by a nice lady who showed us around. During our stay I heard from Jim several times to make sure all was okay. The house is cute as can be, just as pictured. Inside the scale is cozy and comfortable. The kitchen is perfect for a gathering while preparing dinner and breakfast. The beds are firm and the bathrooms clean.
I highly recommend this northwoods lodge.
We're glad you were able to stay with us and that your group really enjoyed Runamuk Roost. Hope you can visit us again.
The prettiest place we’ve seen
Runamuk Roost is the most adorable, beautiful, clean, spacious and cozy home we have ever stayed at. It was so well outfitted and comfortable it was hard to realize this place was from another century. The home is truly a classic gem reflecting an early 20th Century renaissance that combined northwoods cabin lodge with bungalow with craftsman style features.
As we drove along the winding driveway to the house we were awestruck. The photos do not do it justice. Wrapped with real hand hewn log, cedar shake siding and locally quarried stone we couldn’t help but be overwhelmed by it appearance as we first approached. When the owners opened the the large, hand-made front door, the gorgeous, open first floor, with lake vistas and vaulted ceiling, captivated us.
The interior was hand crafted by two local carpenters who used a variety of hand-cut local woods. The furnishings were authentic, serendipituous and full of deep family memories. It was fascinating to have the owner tell the history of each item.
The huge stone fireplace and splendid piano combined to make the great room a nice gathering area to sit and talk. It also offered a splendid view of pretty, clean and quiet lake. The property is very secluded and flanked by thick forests. However we were only 1/2 mile from a great restaurant. There were other nearby eating establishments. Best of all: Both the towns of Hayward and Stone Lake are close (10 minutes).
The home had all the amenities we needed. All first class items. A fully outfitted kitchen with all of the dishes, appliances, pots and pans we needed. Soft linens and towels, firewood, etc. we could not believe it. It was so very incredibly clean too.
When we consider all of the places we visited, Runamuk Roost is by far the best and most captivating home we’ve experienced. We are already planning our next visit. Frankluly, it wouldn’t be very difficult to find a better home.
Property was great, warm & cozy. Weather limited outdoor activities.
It's a cabin right out of the adirondacks. Beautifully decorated, very comfortable.
The lake was quiet other than the wonderful sounds of the loons. Highly recommend this spot!
We had 8 adults and two small dogs in our group and had plenty of room to roam. The atmosphere was cozy and decor and comfortable. Home was well equipped with everything you need. Beach is sugar sand and sunsets were amazing.
What a nice weekend get-away. Beautiful home and lake - clearly well cared for. We were met by Robyn and she was wonderful (even brought us back a hatchet so we could create some kindling for the fire) ...it was a chilly weekend, but you couldn't ask for more watching the lovely sunset - idyllic!
