Our home is a joy for families & pets alike, spacious & homey, it has pine paneling throughout. Parents with small children LOVE the gated, covered, wrap-around deck, as do dog owners (Pet fee is $35 charge). Rain or shine, the views are incredible, esp. in the fall or when the mist moves over the treetops.

We furnish many things in the cabin. Guests say you only need to bring your meals & yourselves. Everything else is there. We pride ourselves in making our guests feel at home!

The views are amazing & there are many things to do in & around the home. There are wonderful long range layered mountain views from the deck, upstairs balcony & from inside the living room.

About our home:

This lovely home has features for everyone! Fabulous views & wonderful breezes! The home is decorated with horse prints, photos of Italy & Margaret Denny photography. We have several antiques. The antique dining table has several leaves, allowing it to seat 1-8 comfortably. We have extra folding tables & chairs in the basement. Check out the coffee table, read the inside! There is also an antique book that is fun to page through.

We have granite countertops, hardwood flooring, new carpeting & new flooring in the basement. You & your party are very important to us, so we try to make the home comfy & inviting w everything you need.

We have 4 bedrooms, 2 upstairs bedrooms each w a balcony; each has two double beds & share one bathroom. Master & basement bedroom each have a queen bed & ensuite bathroom. All linens & towels are sanitized for your visit. The master will be made up for you, the remaining sheets will be left out for you to choose the bed/room that suits you.

You will enjoy preparing meals in our well equipped kitchen & on the huge gas grill. Everything you need is at hand! For those not helping in meal preparation, there is high speed internet WIFI, DVD, pool table, darts & foosball. Bring a deck of cards. If you have a laptop with a Netflix account, you'll have no trouble downloading at this high speed. Our home has plenty of places to read & play games. You can play CDs on the PC, it has great speakers!

After a day of hiking, you might want to wash your duds then play a rousing game of Pool, Darts or Foosball. For the family that enjoys various activities, we have 3 DVD players (one DVD player in the upstairs front bedroom), 2 TVs with DVDs, & a large basement with space for games. The children call the basement 'The Kid Zone'.

Later, watch Satellite TV, or watch a DVD. For that romantic touch, turn on the fireplace with the remote; watch the flames & pulsating embers, while enjoying the long range layered mountain views.

In the mountains, cell phone coverage is spotty, especially traveling the Parkway. Keep this in mind while away from the home. At the home, we have a network extender that allows Verizon phones to work. Other cell phones may work at the top of the hill just past our property & some have had 4 bar service on the back deck. We also have free local & long distance (US) calling. Texting should work for any phone.

The home is great for reading & relaxing. It is so quiet & peaceful. Or just sit & do nothing on one of the 4 swings on the covered, gated, wrap around deck. So many ways to enjoy!

Outside the home, you'll find a reflection bench, a swing surrounded by daffodils (in season) with long range views. There is a fenced dog run that can accommodate 2 horses (that get along well). This secluded home has irises, mountain laurel & rhododendrons.

The night time views are spectacular; the stars seem so close you think you can touch them.

The Cabin is situated in the gated Deer Crossing Community, just off of State maintained Sampson Road, near the Watauga & Wilkes county lines.

2 routes to 321 (Blowing Rock or Boone):

1) Quickest:

a) Right out of Deer Crossing

b) Sampson to the Parkway (right on parkway)

c) Left on Aho which dead ends on 321 (left to BR, right to Boone)

Notes: State road Sampson had 6 mi gravel, but now 1.75 mi is paved & the views are awesome! Trip time is 18-20 minutes & getting quicker as road work continues! Benefits include quicker travel time to attractions, outstanding views & scenery, wildlife sightings of Deer &/or wild turkeys.

2) Minimum gravel:

a) Take Sampson (turn left out of Deer Crossing) to Elk Creek road (right on Elk Creek)

b) Then take Buffalo Cove road to highway 268, then to 321. Benefits include mostly paved roads except for Sampson; trip is longer to reach attractions.

Once you have paid the deposit, you will receive info to access the home, local amenities & attractions.

The property is wooded & nature is a few feet away. The community is great for walking. Note, if you are hiking less traveled wooded paths, wear long pants & before coming into the home, brush them off & park muddy boots outside the door. The wet shoe/boot try is just inside the door.

Outdoor activities:

Our guests do spelunking at Linville Caverns, hike, bird watch & boat at Julian Price Lake just off the Parkway, white water raft at Wahoo, bike on Railroad Grade rd then tube at Todd while others do trout fishing or horseback riding at Leatherwood. Guests say Wilson Creek is good for canoeing & hiking; excellent swimming is at Elk River Falls. There are directions to these locations in the binder inside the home.

The Blue Ridge Parkway area has many less traveled hiking locations. See the book in the home (return to the home after use).

If you want to go to NC gem mining sites we have directions to many places in the white binder at the home!

Bring your ATV, cycling, canoeing or fishing gear, the pull through drive way accommodates 5 or more cars, or car & trailer (motorcycle, canoe, horse or ATV).

There are multiple bird feeders next to the home. When you're out, grab a bag of food put some in the feeders & they will show up! During the hot months, we have sugar for making Hummingbird food. Feeders are located under the deck next to stairs to the basement level.

You will love your day trip to laid back Blowing Rock, Kilwins ice cream shop is a must do, as is Tweetsie for the kids (April-Nov). Boone is famous for App state & Mast General Store, plus Daniel Boone Inn, where the food is terrific! The Saddlebrook restaurant in Leatherwood is open on weekends spring-fall for some tasty fare. When out food shopping you can use one of the Styrofoam coolers we have in the laundry room. The coolers also come in handy on a day trip, to keep sandwiches & drinks cool. If you need to, you can take one of the coolers home with you (those marked Omaha).

There are guide books at the home to find the less-traveled hiking paths off the Blue Ridge Parkway. Please return these to the home.

Stays of December thru end of March, 4WD or AWD is best, be sure you have ample provisions with you on arrival, if heavy snows fall, you might need to wait a day for it to melt/clear/get plowed.


We ask guests with dogs to use our pet sheets to cover fabric furniture to keep hair and dander from fabric; this also helps future guests with pet allergies.

About Mary Ellen Smith

My husband is an avid cyclist and I love to ride my paint horse. We love our family and friends and love to entertain them and have fun! This is a vacation home, our main residence is in Pleasant Garden, NC.

We were relocated to NC from Illinois, where we both grew up. I'm originally from Sandy Springs GA. We met over a pitcher of beer after a softball game and have been together now for over 27 years. My husband is so much fun to be with and we love it here in NC. My son and his wife live in Oregon, Wisconsin, a very long distance for a mom to endure! We love our visitors and will go to the nth degree to make your stay wonderful!

Why Mary Ellen Smith chose North Carolina

We chose this property because it accommodated both our interests! For my husband, the proximity to the Blue Ridge Parkway and all the cycling opportunities it offered, the cooler temps of the mountains and the ability to keep my horse at the property and sometimes trailer the 6.1 miles to Leatherwood for a day of riding. Plus we really love the mountain area. The photo shown here is of a day trip we took to Elk Knob. Elk Knob has a 1.9 mile hiking path to the heavens with heavenly views!

What makes this cabin unique

The biggest benefit of this home is that it is very quiet & peaceful, yet close to all the fun of the Blue Ridge and other tourist destinations! The home has wonderful mountain views, is spacious enough for the whole family so that everyone can do what they please without impacting the others. Proximity to Leatherwood is a real plus! 10$ and a coggins gets you a full day of trail riding! Another sensational feature of the home is the gated wrap around deck. There are 4 swings that allow you to take in the views and enjoy the breezes. A favorite is the upstairs bedrooms with private decking. Grab a chair from the master closet and sit and read on your own private deck. Or, gaze out at the long range views from the upstairs back bedroom. The main floor master has access to the deck and has an ensuite bathroom. The basement bedroom has an ensuite bathroom, and is private. Home includes washer and dryer. The views can be shared from the living room with a french door leading to the deck. With all the windows open, there is rarely a day you need to turn on the AC, but it is at the ready. The home has a wonderful wood stove in the basement and a wall heater, plus an extra refrigerator. The fenced in paddock will accommodate a horse or your favorite pooch! This group spent quality time together and had a fantastic time. Joyce spoke with me on the phone and remarked that this home made everyone feel at home. There was nothing they required as it was all right there for their use. She remarked that it was a wonderful stay, they wrote all their comments in the book we keep at the home for such remarks. She did say that using their GPS, in lieu of our supplied directions, took them out of their way. So future renters, take the directions the owner provides with you! As a property owner, I enjoyed speaking with Joyce, such nice folks! They had a wonderful family get together!

Absolutely Amazing

I NEVER expected what we got! The cabin is beyond gorgeous! Practically everything you need is there! We felt like royalty :) The wrap around porch is so relaxing and the view from the back deck is heavenly. There was nothing about this cabin that we could possibly complain about! It was simply perfect. When we went to Blowing Rock and Boone we took our time and enjoyed the drive down the mountain! It is amazing what you can see when you take the time to look. We saw a mom turkey and about 10 or so babies with her as well as several other wild turkey and we spotted a ground hog or something similar to it on the side of the mountain. There were so many different colored flowers just growing wild, the rocks in the side of the mountain, the small creeks, the moths ... so many different kinds of them ... this cabin is something that anyone would definitely enjoy! Look forward to our trip back next year :)

This cabin is all you could possibly wish for.

Our entire party was impressed with all the cabin and location had to offer. Plenty of hang out space for everyone inside and out. Although we had a large party no one ever felt cramped. Everything and more was provided. We all had a wonderful time and hope this is just the beginning of many vacations together at this location. My husband said all you need is a bite to eat and a pair of clean undies. All else is provided. And to be honest, he's right. We didn't have any issues with the property. It was clean and well maintained. We enjoyed Tweetsie RR one day. Grandfather's Mtn. another day. A day trip down the parkway. Grocery stores and Walmart just minutes away.

Great cabin in the woods!

We stayed here a few weeks ago because my husband was riding in the Gran Fondo in Boone. The house was really perfect for us - there were 7 of us staying and there was plenty of rooms and beds for everyone. We cooked a few times and had everything we needed. The house has a wrap around porch with several porch swings. This was my favorite part of the house - I spent a lot of time reading on the porch and enjoying the view on the back deck. The house is definitely off the beat and path and a great place to go if you want to get away from it all! Mary Ellen, the owner was very easy to work with too!

Honest Assessment (Stayed 4 nights July 2016)

Good and not so good review. Nice solid house, well appointed, clean, and plenty of room. Very quiet neighborhood with nice view of woods and mountains from the wrap-around porch. Top floor has 2 full-size beds in each of the two bedrooms, both sharing a full bath. Main floor has the living room, kitchen, master bed with full bath, separate 1/2 bath and porch, lower floor has laundry, pool table, queen bedroom, and odd full bath that requires user to step up 1 foot into it. House is only accessible by a long dusty gravel road, some washboard, that snakes to the gated community and then another dusty gravel road into the community to the house. The drive on gravel is at least 20 minutes. Truck or 4X4 is recommended no matter the season because the road will rattle bolts loose. Long distance from anywhere by vehicle. 1 hour to Blowing Rock, 1.5 hours to Boone, and 3 hours to Asheville. if you're looking at this as a base-camp to sight see, strongly recommend elsewhere. If you're looking for seclusion with a place to hide in the middle of nowhere, this is it. Be prepared to drive a long way to get anywhere. Also the house is for sale with a sign out front by a local realtor, so be prepared for possible unannounced visitors. I believe we were visited while out one day. All in all, a nice stay but I would not have picked this place had I known the extremely remote location. Surrounding roads are gravel with lots of twists, narrow turns, and inclines as you might expect for the location. Don't ride the brakes going downhill. In addition, be aware that the owner accused us of leaving a stain on the carpet in the master bedroom and later admitted there was a new cleaning crew. No mention that the previous cleaning crew may have overlooked this and there was no mention of any pre-existing stain.There were five in our party all middle age and older, non-smokers. We absolutely did not cause any stains or other damage, and tried very hard to follow all rules and leave the property in as good or better condition than it was when we arrived. To her credit, the owner answered all emails promptly and was cordial but still unbelievably left poor feedback for our stay. If you choose to stay here, be advise that you must report any pre-existing problems to the owner as if you are surveying a rental car or you might be accused of damage. Enjoy your stay.

Owner's Response: James, sorry that you felt this way & I am surprised your review did not match what you said in our email exchange. You said you & your party had a great visit. We cannot believe the driving times you stated. It is 25-30 mins to Blowing Rock and 30 to Boone. Also, except for winter months if it snows significantly, a truck/SUV/AWD vehicle is not at all required, and the majority of our many guests use regular cars. We also strongly dispute your claim that the road will “rattle bolts loose”. Significant portions of the road have now been paved and more is planned. Sampson is a state-maintained road that is plowed and graded when needed. Upon getting a report of a new large stain, I reached out to see if you knew of the stain & what might have caused it. This knowledge helps to find the right cleaning method. No deduction was made from your security deposit, and we have only rarely had to deduct minor amounts from renter’s deposits. Yes, our home is on the market & we are adamant about renter’s privacy. We do not allow realtors to access the home while renters are staying. Realtors can visit the days the home is not rented & when renters have either left or have not yet arrived. I can guarantee you that no one visited our home during your stay. Most folks rate us on the presentation of our home, the items we provide, our views plus our above & beyond interaction/help & not the road, since we include information on home access in our VRBO ads. We would like to extend an invitation to you to come back & see us again & I'll be happy to give you another discount like the one we provided for your visit. Beautiful home with amazing view

Home was EXACTLY as detailed....roomy, very well maintained, clean, lots of amenities provided, excellent views. Driving directions were "right on". NO problem

finding the home. GREAT customer service provided by the owners. Very close to Buffalo Mercantile Store which has the BEST pizza ever eaten. Also close to

a local very friendly church which we attended.. Many happy hours were spent here enjoying the "wrap around" deck, playing pool, playing games, exploring the

sights. One of my most enjoyable vacations ever!! I will definitely be recommending this cabin to my family and friends.

Wonderful Place... Away from it all!!!

A group of us stayed here for my husbands 30th Birthday. We had a wonderful time sitting around the fire pit, swinging on the deck and enjoying the views, and just being lazy. We also traveled into Blowing Rock for dinner at the Town Tavern, it was delicious!

Think about this, staying in Blowing Rock then visiting Boone takes the same amount of travel time as if you were staying at this home & going to Blowing Rock or Boone. Same with Linville Falls/Cavern, takes less time to visit the falls than it does if staying in Boone or Blowing Rock. From the home to BR or to Boone, is the same amount of time. But you don't have the traffic or the tourists, just visit, have fun and come home and relax in a home that feels like your own home.

Home is located in the mountains just 7 miles from the parkway, 9 miles from Blowing Rock city limits and 13 miles from Boone, in the Deer Crossing gated community just off of Sampson road. Home has great mountain views from back deck, upper balcony bedroom & from inside the living room.

(Note, some maps may show us as being near Deep Gap but we are on a state maintained road called Sampson between Boone and Blowing Rock).

Home is also 6.1 miles from Leatherwood for horseback riding or fly fishing! This resort offers many activities too!

There are many fun activities in the Blowing Rock/Boone area. Search for a site that explains 67 things to do in the Boone Blowing Rock area for more detail, this link will be provided to you after booking.

Near the home there are loads of state stocked trout fishing sites, horse back riding at Leatherwood. Visit Linville Falls. Many of our visitors, go there to hike & take photos. Alternatively, there are many relaxing things to do at the home. Hike the community, bike the hills nearby, take a deep breath & commune with nature. This is THE place to totally unplug and get away from the hustle and bustle of life & reconnect with your family! Fully furnished with many, many extras, the personal touch that shows we care about you! Stay tuned, Sampson Road is being widened and then paved. The trip to town(s) will be much quicker. There is no hunting or target shooting on our property so please don't bring firearms, BB guns, pellet guns etc.

We have a lovely firepit, use on basement level only.

This is our home, please don't leave bags of garbage next to cans on basement level or on the deck for critters to get into, we have several garbage cans on site. If you fill them up, please take a load of garbage and recycling to the Buffalo Cove center. Hours & directions in white binder.

The home is set up for maximum family use. Please do not move appliances or furniture, the rooms are all large and can fit pack & plays, blow up mattresses & luggage etc.

We have a dehumidifier in the basement to help keep the home fresh. Please do not unplug it or anything that is plugged into the white surge protector or the wall. To use the fridge, plug in the long green cord into the white surge protector & then close the doors. The fridge has ice and water in the door, so moving may trigger a leak, causing damage to the new flooring.

Security deposit is refunded within 14 days of your departure. Once you receive notice that the refund has been started, you may get additional info by calling Home Away Payments at 1-866-210-6106. VRBO handles the money side of the rental.

Our cleaning rates are low & are based on the number in your party. Please leave our home as you found it. If you make spills, clean them up. If you have questions or concerns, please call me at 336-430-6855. I'll be happy to help you!

  • All bedrooms have closets with hangers. In addition to the 4 bedrooms with beds for sleeping 12, there is a futon that can accommodate 1-2 more and 3 queen blow up beds. Sheets are located in the master closet & are marked full, queen. We have blankets and pillows for sleeping 14 plus extras. Each bedroom is carpeted. Some have phones. Main floor bedroom and basement bedroom have ensuite bath. Basement bedroom has a large screen TV with Satellite & DVD player. Main floor bedroom (master) has a PC (CD/DVD) with printer.

Foosball, pool & darts. Ceiling fans in all bedrooms and in living room, heat and A/C. Styrofoam Cooler for day trips, Bath soap & emergency toiletries available. Extra fridge in basement for more food/beverage storage. Garbage cans on site, Smoke free home, Wood stove & fire pit (bring your own wood). 4 Bird feeders on site, bring your own food, watch the birds & squirrels from the wrap around deck. Star gazing from wrap around deck (stars so close you feel like you can touch them!) Motion sensor lights on home. Make sure these lights are on if you want the motion sensors on. Switches are next to kitchen door & are marked.
