This house is exactly what we needed for multiple family members coming together for a celebration. It was large enough that we all had our own space, but cozy enough that we were able to visit comfortably. Everything we needed was provided, the home was very clean, and overall it was the perfect option for our family.
One thing to note: this house is not close to the Bear Lake lodge - we had plans to utilize the fitness center and possibly other amenities while we were there, but the lodge is 5 miles away, further into the property on a curvy mountain road, and the fitness center did not open until 9AM. Because of our schedule (2 graduation ceremonies), I never did get to visit the lodge or see the lake. We also hoped to have time to do more hiking - there were so many wildflowers in bloom and the trails seemed to be easy to navigate - there was just not enough time!
My family and I (2 adults, 4 children) stayed at Mountain View Lodge for several days in July 2015. William Clark, the property manager, was so nice and extremely helpful. He responded very quickly to emails and phone calls, and sent me a ton of information about the house and area.
The house is amazingly beautiful and very spacious. You walk in on the main floor where there is a master bedroom/bathroom, two additional bedrooms, another bathroom, living room with TV, dining room, kitchen, and the AMAZING deck. I basically booked this house because of the deck and it was everything I hoped for -- open and large -- with beautiful views. We started and ended our days on that deck. I can't even imagine how gorgeous it must be in fall when the leaves are turning. Downstairs is a huge rec room with TV and games, another bedroom and bathroom, laundry room, and another large deck. The kids really enjoyed this area.
The resort itself was easy to get to and very beautiful. There were so many things to do. We went hiking (there is a trail at the end/top of the street), fishing, and exploring. The Lake Club was about a 15 minute drive for us (we are not used the mountain roads, so we took it slow). The pool, hot tub, and lake were gorgeous. We rented a pontoon boat and tubes for the kids. Everyone who worked there was very nice.
This was our first trip to this area, but we will definitely return. I highly recommend staying at Mountain View Lodge>
We have been coming to Bear Lake Reserve for several years now, and we always stay in this mountain home. It is located in a quiet, private area with a wonderful view and is reasonably priced. It is spacious with an upper and lower area - each with plenty of space and bedrooms. The downstairs area is especially good for small children or teenagers (has a large screen TV also) and the upper floor has an indoor fireplace with real wood logs and a large TV. There are even plenty of DVD's provided in case you forgot to bring some of your own. The house is pleasantly decorated in a "mountain style" and comfortable. The outside, rear deck is open, large, and affords a panoramic unobstructed view of the mountains. The Reserve's amenities are many from pontoon boating and canoeing/kayaking to a double pool (one with a slide for the kids) and a jacuzzi with a great view of the lake. The Clubhouse has great food and a large terrace for dining and also large indoor dining area. The new stone-built outdoor poolside bar is a nice, new feature (great pina coladas!). Hiking is available, as is a grilling site and a separate site for making s'mores - and of course the golfing. There is a media room in the Clubhouse that we always take our two grandsons to for an afternoon movie - they love it. We like to visit the Greeters Cottage for chit-chat and to pick up cold drinks etc. The area behind the Cottage is good for frisbee and playing for the kids. A great home and location for a vacation overall. Oh, and the quaint, picturesque mountain towns of Cashiers and The Highlands are only about a half-hour drive away. We stayed a full week and will be back again next year.
Just returned two days ago from a wonderful week-long stay at Mountain View Lodge and my family of five - including our two dogs - are already missing it. First, we loved being tucked away at Bear Lake, yet we were only 20 mins to the adorable town of Sylva (spend time there and speak to the locals- great book stores, a few nice restaurants and breweries - don't miss Haywood BBQ in Dillsboro!) and a little over an hour to Asheville. The roads within the community are curvy and some are steep (remember this IS a mountain home), it takes 15-20 mins to get to the Lake Club, but that wasn't our priority. We really liked being at the end of the drive with a hiking trail just up the short hill - you were not isolated, but also not on top of other homes for privacy. While I came armed with all kinds of bug repellant, we never needed it. I disagree with the previous reviewer on many of their points, but most especially in regards to the upstairs deck - I would NOT want it to be screened-in, as the view is wonderful and again, we did not have an issue with bugs. It was a wonderful place to enjoy morning coffee or a glass of wine in the evening.
Having rented many luxury homes in various locations over the past 20 years, I have to say this was one of the most well-appointed. The kitchen was fully stocked with a wide array of pots, pans and utensils and while I typically travel with extra supplies (TP, dish detergent, etc.) I never needed any of it - I even brought beach towels, but the house was already stocked with everything we needed! William and Gayle Clark's attention to detail makes it so easy to be a guest in this lovely home - light switches were labeled for convenience (I loved this!) and in addition to having us greeted shortly upon arrival to go over the house/area, he provided a wonderful binder with info on the community, house and surrounding area.
Bear Lake Reserve is really a beautiful property and we loved the attention that was paid to all of the designated hiking trails and the Lake Club is really lovely. We rented a boat and used the resort pool and generally just enjoyed the trails with our dogs who were in heaven! We were two adults and three teenagers and the house fit our needs for a relaxing trip to get away from our hectic lives. We fell in love with the area and would return again!
I don't want to discourage anyone from renting this home b/c it is really a nice / clean place and our family LOVES BEAR LAKE (3rd time to Bear Lake)... However, for us we were disappointed there was no screened in porch. From the moment we walked in we were deflated and this compounded when the rain set in... Another thing to keep in mind is this home is located at the top of the street and the driveway is steep and a bit cumbersome for parking, something to consider. Finally the inside of the home was nicely furnished, but I would encourage any future renters to bring their own pillows.
Overall, we did enjoy our time in the MTNS and at the Lake Club which is always a great place to be.... and finally there are BEARS. We had one outside the window the morning of July 5th and later noticed two muddy paw prints on our car window where one was trying to look in... But we never saw one.
We were in Bear Lake with a hiking club and shared the house with six other hikers. The house is laid out in a manor to which we all had our private space, plus plenty of public area for visiting and dinning. Everything we needed plus more was provided. It's a beautiful location with great views from the decks. William lead our hikes in and around Panthertown Valley, and did a superb job. He's quite knowledgeable of the area and the history of Bear Lake and Panthertown Valley. The hiking in the area is top notch, with many beautiful waterfalls to be seen.
