Location, location, location, says it all. You will not find another listing this PRIVATE & QUIET on the ocean. No condo hallways, no strangers or neighbors you can hear. This house has a private walkway to spectacular Crescent Beach. You won't even see another person -- unless you want to! Then hit the beach for a swim or a walk (you can go for miles) there are restaurants and bars within walking distance, but once you're at the house you would never know it.
One of only three private houses on Crescent Beach for rent. This is the truly private getaway!
If you want, jump into the car and the world of zoo's, museums, architecture and history is yours. Dozens of parks and ecological destinations within miles. Rent a bike, board, horse or a kayak to see things from another angle-- but then again, it's not easy to leave that deck!
Take time to read the reviews, this house does not disappoint!
Perfect house for the Big Chill week, a girls get away OR a romantic honeymoon or anniversary!
This is not a good house for young children in fact children under the age of ten are discouraged entirely-- there are many stairs and decks and walkways that are unsafe for children to play on.

About Ann Shakeshaft
We have lived in NYC for 35 years and this is the only spot we could imagine giving up our beloved city for.
Ann Shakeshaft purchased this House in 2012
Why Ann Shakeshaft chose Crescent Beach
Love to walk the beach, shelling and fishing along the way? Great food, biking, kayaking and yoga close by to keep you busy. We are 'house people', we like to fiddle and fix and decorate. This house, aside from being on an amazing beach is very private and we have started to bring in our antiques-- making it a bit more elegant than most rental beach houses. We also cook, and this house has a fantastic completely renovated (2016) kitchen to make great meals-- especially for a number of cooks to do their thing all at once. Buy (or catch) fresh fish and grill it on the deck or in one of two ovens then wash it down with all the wine you can fit into the separate wine fridge-- finally, walk it out to the deck for a moonlit dinner! Since the house is built into a sand dune and the views are at the top, there are a number of staircases to make all of the areas accessible. For this reason it is not a good house for very young, old or physically handicapped individuals. This house is NOT childproofed. The deck, walkway and stairs all are open to dangerous drops. Other than the beach there are no areas on the property appropriate for unattended children.
What makes this House unique
The privacy is really the thing that sets our house apart from ANY other rental on Crescent Beach. You are not dealing with other condo renters, or even visible neighbors, this is one of a kind. The wildlife on our little island is impressive, from the birds that fly along the beach and nest in the spring, to the dolphins and whales that you will see passing by or the turtles that nest on the beach and live in the dunes, its like living in a ecological park. If you get tired of watching from the house, the area is covered with many equally animal full parks and beaches. The Intracoastal waterway is just behind us and that has a completely different vibe-- rent a kayak and check it out when you get sick of surfing, fishing and shelling on the beach. Additionally, the house is large and very comfortable for four or six people with lots of seating areas to provide privacy and quiet.

Beautiful House in a great setting - what more could you ask?
I've rented other oceanfront homes in Santa Barbara CA, Santa Monica CA, Long Beach Island NJ, and Dana Point CA. This is probably the nicest one. It's well located near restaurants and shops yet really private. There's currently an empty lot to the south so there's only one immediate neighbor.
The master bedroom has a very comfortable 4-poster bed, two nice closets for you to use, and a lovely master bath with a large walk-in shower. The MBR also has a sitting area on the ocean-side of the house. We watched the sun rise over the ocean one morning.
There's a large great room which comprises a living area, dining area, and a fairly-well equipped open kitchen with a Sub-zero refrigerator, a Bosch dishwasher and a beverage refrigerator, along with the island cook top. A powder room is near the living area.
Downstairs there's a big family room with a large flat-panel TV and a large L-shaped couch. There are also two more bedrooms and bathrooms.
You can walk down to the beach and walk north along the ocean for about 5 minutes and you'll be at the delightful South Beach Grill. Try the fish tacos. A nice Publix market is about10 minutes north by car. If you like Gluten-free food they have a nice selection of products.
I expect that we'll revisit this home next year.
great house on a fantastic beach
The house was maintained well with spacious space for my family (my wife, I and the two teenager kids). The scenery is wonderful, especially at sun rise. The beach is clean and great for relaxation. The house is isolated, but yet near to every thing. There are multiple choice of wonderful restaurants nearby. There is Cinema 20 minutes away. The owner and the caregiver are very helpful. It was a wonderful vacation.
Our family of five stayed here over Thanksgiving Week. The home is spacious and very comfortably furnished and outfitted. The beach was terrific and the kids loved the ice-cream shop a short minute walk away. Highly recommended!
We loved our stay July 8-13, 2017! This is a clean and extremely comfortable home to relax in with a flat and pristine beach. The ocean here has a long stretch of shallows great for children to play without getting too deep too quickly. I had not been to St Augustine in many years and this was a treat to be so close to so many things to do and great food but be hidden in a private home. The owner and manager are extremely friendly and professional. And... I loved all the books throughout the home! Hope to come back someday!
Thank you so much for the wonderful review. It means a lot to us as it serves to enlighten future renters and us as well as to the plus's and hopefully no minus's!
Have a great fall-- I'm hoping Irma stays away!!!!
The house was really nice
The house was really nice and clean and had a great kitchen. It had a great deck and tons of parking and the lot is very private.
We just felt there were some VERY important factors that were left out of the listing. Because the address isn't share with you until a refund is impossible what you don't know is that this house is one house away from a public beach access and there were dozens of cars/trucks up and down the beach all day, every day. They parked right in front of the walkway occasionally.
So, the privacy only applies to the house. There was no privacy on the beach at all, even the life guard stands were just a stone's throw away. If we had known the house was in such a congested area I would have looked for another house. We actually experienced a homeless person asleep under the walk way one morning and he decided to hang out with us all day until we finally gave him $20.00 and he left. We also experienced a lady 10 feet from us as you don't get a lot of real estate on the beach, kick sand on her dogs poop instead of cleaning it up.
Two nights at around 2 am the bikers at the bar across the street were out shooting a shot gun, quite scary and one of the deputies on the beach said he had "nothing good to say" about that place.
The only other thing you might want to be aware of that in all the houses we've rented is that there are no extra anything as far as linens. No extra towels, sheets, nothing. The property manager told me to throw a towel over the taxidermied animals if I didn't like seeing them but that really isn't an option since there aren't any extra towels. Note: dead stuffed animals all over the house.
WOW. Hi Lisa,
So sorry for bad experience.
Extra sheets not given because we had discussed how many were allowed and sofas are not for sleeping extra guests.
Taxidermy, fish on walls and birds in boxes-- yes, it's true. I will now include that issue, although the pictures on VRBO already show them.
Beach on 4th of July week-- yes it is not secluded, but I guarentee you did not see or hear them from the house.
Hope you have better luck next time!
Wonderful spring break vacation for the family
The house was as it was portrayed in the photos but in real life, it all seem more magnificent. The beach was SO close and access was easy with chairs/toys/etc. There was much small wildlife around (frogs, lizards, turtles) and going out ghostcrab hunting at night was always prosperous. The house is easily large enough to escape for an hour of reading. The back porch was perfect for grilling and we ate most of our meals out there. Sunrise and early walks on the beach were usually done in isolation b/c this section of the beach was away from the larger hotels and condos. Beds, bathrooms, and kitchen were all very adequate and there were no let-downs during the trip.
Spectacular Crescent Beach is just off your very private deck and out your window. All you hear is the roll of the waves as you sit watching dolphin, whale and pelicans glide by.
Although private, this house is a few minutes walk to a couple of bars and restaurants most of which serve delicious seafood and refreshing drinks while you soak up the low-key beach vibe.
St. Augustine is one of the most beautiful cities in the USA and and the oldest continuously occupied European-established settlement and port in the continental United States. Old world charm, and beautiful architecture, combined with restaurants, museums, shopping and a very comfortable temperature year round equal a vacation paradise.
