Welcome to simplicity. Remember what a trip to the mountains used to feel like? Back then a mountain vacation was the sun coming up and a cup of hot coffee watched from the porch swing. It was nothing to do but whatever you wanted. Well, that kind of family vacation still happens here at Aunt Birdie's, where we're a little retro and a whole lot of fun.
Well-mannered dogs, reasonable children and fun-loving grownups welcome.
When you see the photos, you'll notice there's a basement level. It is not connected to the upstairs level through interior stairs and we do not rent out that bottom level. That's where we have the laundry room and another small bathroom.
We have TV but not cable or satellite. We have a fully equipped kitchen but no dishwasher except your kids or yourself. Ceiling fans and windows keep you cool at 4,100 feet above sea level.
Come see for yourself why this is such a special place.
Though officially owned by an LLC, we are four long-time friends who got together and brought this old house at the top of the ridge back into its glory.
Beth McLeod purchased this cabin in 2007
Jon and Beth live on this road and also have a vacation rental on the nearby creek. We thought the house, which had fallen into disrepair, was a beautiful setting and worth saving.
Peace and quiet, but quite close to town. I am not sure I need to say any more!
Our first time in the High Country. Lousy weather the time we were here and yet we managed to have a wonderful visit. We visited the surrounding areas by day...town of Boone, Blowing Rock, Valle Crucis and the Mast General Store (worth the short drive), Banner Elk, and Grandfather Mountain, traveled the Blue Ridge Parkway and were blown away by the natural beauty. The foliage was in full breathtaking force. Most days were wet and windy but we knew at the end of the day we would be back at Aunt Birdies Cabin. The cabin is clean, clean, clean, remote and yet a short drive into Boone. The views from the porch were very beautiful and we looked forward to sitting out there with our coffee in the mornings and our red wine in the evenings. The cabin is not modern and outfitted with granite countertops and stainless steel appliances but it is warm and clean, the beds are comfortable, and the fireplace works like a champ...takes you back to the days you visited your grandparents vacation cabin in the woods. It became our home away from home in our short visit. The owners were easy to reach and very responsive. And our pooch was welcome.
Our 6 family members and one dog recently stayed at Aunt Birdie’s in order to attend and celebrate my youngest son’s graduation from Appalachian State University. It was a pleasant and far better choice for the family gathering than local hotels – much easier on the pocketbook, too!
I cannot say enough about how perfect Aunt Birdie’s was for us. The setting was beautiful and even included a bonfire spot with plenty of wood. We didn’t get to have a fire because of rain, but we did enjoy sitting on the wrap-around porch and enjoying the view. The cabin had everything we needed. My 4 sons were raised with family dinner every night, and that tradition continued while we were there. My son and I cooked for everyone and were pleased to find a few staple items like salt and pepper, etc., in the cabinets. All cooking and serving utensils we needed were available and the stove, refrigerator, microwave, and coffee pot all got lots of use. We found plenty of towels, linens, and hot water for all. The living area was furnished with books, games, puzzles, and a globe that two of my sons spent over an hour determining when it was made by checking out the names of the countries displayed. I think that was one of their favorite activities. An added bonus was the wrap-around porch is furnished with a baby/dog gate to keep children and pets confined and out of danger.
The best part about staying at Aunt Birdie’s is having a place to return to in the future as my family has fallen in love with the area as a recreation and vacation spot. All my communications with the owner were answered quickly and we were permitted to have a very late checkout time as graduation was on checkout day. I highly recommend this mountain retreat!
We had a wonderful weekend stay at this cabin - very welcoming with all the essentials. Our kids really loved the porch and the space to roam around. Would recommend to anyone seeking a no-nonsense, laid-back get away.
We had a wonderful girls getaway at Aunt Bertie's. The cabin was perfect. It was very clean, nice and toasty and all the little touches made it extra special. The kitchen/living room was so inviting and that lazy susan on the kitchen table was great! The views are spectacular from all sides of the house and it was so quiet and peaceful. We had everything we needed--bed linens, towels, hair dryer, shampoo, soap, grill, fire pit and pet friendly. I would highly recommend this cabin. It is only a few minutes from Boone and Blowing Rock and the drive is gorgeous. The owners left us a folder with advice on restaurants, things to do and all we needed to know about the house. If you are looking for a quiet, clean, and rustic getaway, this is the place for you. We will definitely be going back. Thanks so much for an awesome stay!
First, let me say what the cabin is not.....it is not new and sparkling, nor are it's furnishings, fixtures and appliances. However the cabin is charming, well appointed and comfortable. The beds gave a good night's sleep and we found everything we needed for a week long stay. The laundry room came in handy and we cooked about half of the time so the well appointed kitchen was appreciated. The spacious deck offered a view down the valley and the only noise we had was when the neighbors mowed. We appreciated the radio and TV during several rainy days, and we even enjoyed playing some vinyl as LP's and a turntable were available. The cabin is not far from town but up a very steep gravel road. Since you are coming to the area for the mountains, you should be ready for this. The owners were easily reached and responsive. I would stay here again.
Over the past few years, we have enjoyed the peace and tranquility which this home offers. The location is far enough from town to only hear the birds sing while being close enough see the lights in the distance. The large wrap around porch is perfect to enjoy a quiet cup of coffee on a chilly morning while watching the fog lift from the mountain. The porch swing invites you to sit and gaze into the valley. The home has accommodated our family of four comfortably. We have enjoyed being able to venture up and down the mountain watching the chipmunks scurry and the woodpeckers tap on the trees. The home is perfect for a quiet getaway for two or an adventurous time with an entire family. The ability to hike, fish, and shop within 15 minutes along with the ability to be at either Tweetsie Railroad or Grandfather Mountain in 30 minutes makes the location ideal. We have cherished our time at this house and hope to make many more memories here.
