Bedrooms 2
Property type cabin
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

Big Views, 2-Bedroom, 1 bath cabin 10 minutes from Boone

Welcome to simplicity. Remember what a trip to the mountains used to feel like? Back then a mountain vacation was the sun coming up and a cup of hot coffee watched from the porch swing. It was nothing to do but whatever you wanted. Well, that kind of family vacation still happens here at Aunt Birdie's, where we're a little retro and a whole lot of fun.

Well-mannered dogs, reasonable children and fun-loving grownups welcome.

When you see the photos, you'll notice there's a basement level. It is not connected to the upstairs level through interior stairs and we do not rent out that bottom level. That's where we have the laundry room and another small bathroom.

We have TV but not cable or satellite. We have a fully equipped kitchen but no dishwasher except your kids or yourself. Ceiling fans and windows keep you cool at 4,100 feet above sea level.

Come see for yourself why this is such a special place.

About Beth McLeod

Though officially owned by an LLC, we are four long-time friends who got together and brought this old house at the top of the ridge back into its glory.

Beth McLeod purchased this cabin in 2007

Why Beth McLeod chose Boone

Jon and Beth live on this road and also have a vacation rental on the nearby creek. We thought the house, which had fallen into disrepair, was a beautiful setting and worth saving.

What makes this cabin unique

Peace and quiet, but quite close to town. I am not sure I need to say any more!

There's a fire pit and plenty of burnable wood in the woods on the property. The house is a mile up a state-maintained paved road and feels a world away from town, which is an easy 10-minute drive to Boone, home to Applachian State University, close to Tweetsie, Grandfather Mountain and Blowing Rock. Y'all come!

Excellent get away location. Quiet, private, beautiful location, yet very close to Boone

  • 4 of 5

Very nice and clean cottage with beautiful views. Our child and our pet enjoyed the open area in front of it and we enjoyed the quiet and peaceful atmosphere watching down the hill from the porch. Nice hiking paths along creeks. One of the best stays we have had so far in this area.

Quaint and comfortable, just as advertised...issue with reservation

  • 4 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Cozy Nest. It was just as described and we too could see "coming to Grandma's house" again. Owners were quick to respond to questions and to help us through some very scary weather while we were there. Only reason I did not rate this stay a "5" was an issue with the reservation. We received all the appropriate documents so we went directly to the cottage right around 4 pm. We left fairly quickly to go to Boone and returned a couple of hours later. Waiting for us was a note from the owner indicating they were not expecting us and they had no record of our reservation. After further research, they did find the record - just glad there was not another renter coming with the same information. I think this was an issue with VRBO/Homeaway, not the owners. This makes the always increasing "fees to ensure a good experience" tacked on by VRBO even more frustating.

Owner's Response: As the owners, we, too, were frustrated with the booking error as it was marked "tentative" on the calendar when I went deep into the web pages, so it did not show up on the active calendar. And, YES, good thing it was not double booked!

Summer Vacation

  • 4 of 5

We stayed here for a little under a week and had a good time. Our two young boys spent most of the time playing on the porch or in the field in front of the house. My wife and I enjoyed studying the eclectic collection of art and knick knacks. The view was amazing.

Our family stayed at Aunt Birdies instead of backpacking in the Smokies due to rain.

The house is like visiting Great Grandma's, very comfy, lived in, and cozy.

We loved playing in the woods, listening to the record collection, and introducing our kids to Monopoly.

Boone is a short 10min drive, and Grandfather Mountain 25min.

Huge thank you to Mrs. Beth for being so accommodating with our booking mix up!

Remote yet also accessible

  • 5 of 5

Our first time in the High Country. Lousy weather the time we were here and yet we managed to have a wonderful visit. We visited the surrounding areas by of Boone, Blowing Rock, Valle Crucis and the Mast General Store (worth the short drive), Banner Elk, and Grandfather Mountain, traveled the Blue Ridge Parkway and were blown away by the natural beauty. The foliage was in full breathtaking force. Most days were wet and windy but we knew at the end of the day we would be back at Aunt Birdies Cabin. The cabin is clean, clean, clean, remote and yet a short drive into Boone. The views from the porch were very beautiful and we looked forward to sitting out there with our coffee in the mornings and our red wine in the evenings. The cabin is not modern and outfitted with granite countertops and stainless steel appliances but it is warm and clean, the beds are comfortable, and the fireplace works like a champ...takes you back to the days you visited your grandparents vacation cabin in the woods. It became our home away from home in our short visit. The owners were easy to reach and very responsive. And our pooch was welcome.

Perfect for the Family

  • 5 of 5

Our 6 family members and one dog recently stayed at Aunt Birdie’s in order to attend and celebrate my youngest son’s graduation from Appalachian State University. It was a pleasant and far better choice for the family gathering than local hotels – much easier on the pocketbook, too!

I cannot say enough about how perfect Aunt Birdie’s was for us. The setting was beautiful and even included a bonfire spot with plenty of wood. We didn’t get to have a fire because of rain, but we did enjoy sitting on the wrap-around porch and enjoying the view. The cabin had everything we needed. My 4 sons were raised with family dinner every night, and that tradition continued while we were there. My son and I cooked for everyone and were pleased to find a few staple items like salt and pepper, etc., in the cabinets. All cooking and serving utensils we needed were available and the stove, refrigerator, microwave, and coffee pot all got lots of use. We found plenty of towels, linens, and hot water for all. The living area was furnished with books, games, puzzles, and a globe that two of my sons spent over an hour determining when it was made by checking out the names of the countries displayed. I think that was one of their favorite activities. An added bonus was the wrap-around porch is furnished with a baby/dog gate to keep children and pets confined and out of danger.

The best part about staying at Aunt Birdie’s is having a place to return to in the future as my family has fallen in love with the area as a recreation and vacation spot. All my communications with the owner were answered quickly and we were permitted to have a very late checkout time as graduation was on checkout day. I highly recommend this mountain retreat!

Owner's Response: We'd love to have you Ohioans return for some more porch time and maybe a camp fire, weather permitting! Thanks for finding us, as I know there are many rental cabins in our beautiful NC mountains.
