About the property

3 bedroom villa to sleep up to 7 in North West Crete

The renovated Kourkoulios Villa has retained many of the characteristics of the old house; the thick walls keep the heat out of the house, the kitchen has replaced the old oven and the master bedroom is exactly like the old one. The house was decorated by the owners with great care. Actually, most of the ornaments of the house are made by the owners, who used materials from the old house, enhancing the traditional style of the house.

At the ground floor of the villa there are the living room, the dining area, the kitchen and a wc. The first floor consists of the master bedroom, a bedroom with a double bed and a sofa bed and a bathroom. A balcony offers a beautiful panoramic view over the country. There is an independent studio attached to the main house - the old stable. It consists of two single beds, a kitchen equipped with the main equipment and a bathroom.

Kourkoulios Villa is a traditional villa located in the hamlet of Hambatha, in the beautiful Apokoronas Province. The seaside resort of Georgioupolis is just 6km away from the villa. Hambatha is a small village, situated in the foothills of the mountains, without amenities; At Maza village, 800m from the villa there is a traditional tavern where you can taste homemade Cretan dishes. Vrises village, where you can find everything you may need, is about 3km away from the villa.

The villa is built on the slope of a mountain, offering a panoramic view of the green landscape. The trim garden is plenty of colorful flowers and herbs. The private pool and the area around it are perfect places for relaxation, enjoying the hot sun and the tranquility of the area. Next to the barbecue there is a romantic covered area with a wooden outdoor dining set. Scattered around the garden there are pieces of the old house; the loom, the wooden entrance door, wooden shutters, are cleverly used to meet current needs.

Amazing Villa Perfect Holiday

  • 5 of 5

We arrived in Georgioupolis where we had arranged to meet Anthony (Antonia’s son) who escorted us to the villa. Antonia was there to welcome us and show us around the family’s beautiful villa and garden. Our welcome pack was more than sufficient and included items that we had not expected plus an added extra - Antonia’s delicious home made cake

The villa has been expertly renovated in a traditional style to include some of the features and items from the original building. The villa is immaculate and has been decorated to a high standard, and Antonia’s attention to detail and artistic flair are visible throughout. Antonia provided fresh flowers from her home garden, a particular favourite was a highly scented white and yellow flower, we liked them so much she brought more on her visits.

The garden is well established with climbing plants, flowers, herbs, veg and a fig tree, a walnut tree overhangs into the garden from the nearby church. Antonia tended the garden on her visits, she explained what the herbs could be used for and which ones she uses in her cooking and was also happy for us to help ourselves to any of the herbs, veg etc.

Some days we spent our time at the villa, relaxing by the pool, which is private and not overlooked, having barbecues, eating and drinking under the covered pergola and enjoying the view which is uninterrupted across a ravine to the neighbouring hills and a view of the sea.

We visited the local taverna there’s no menu but Kostas (the owner) will bring out plate, after plate, of local dishes followed by the ubiquitous raki.

We spent our evenings in Georgioupolis which is only a short drive away. There are plenty of tavernas and restaurants and a few bars all offering excellent food and wines. There are also a few supermarkets, small gift shops, chemist etc.

Antonia and her family clearly put their time and energy into ensuring that you have a wonderful stay at the villa.

We arrived as Antonia’s guests but left as friends.

Good luck and best wishes for the future.

Nice Villa

  • 5 of 5

We had a really good time at Antonia's villa. We were welcomed with fresh flowers, fruit, wine and cake. As the previous review mentions we had some very tasty home made cakes provided by Antonia. The accomodation was very tastefully decorated with attention to detail and the main house had very roomy bedrooms. The garden is full of flowers and herbs and very well tended and Antonia was happy for us to help ourselves to fresh produce from the garden.

This is a family run establishment and at some point we met most of the family, from Kostas (Antonia and Georgios' son-in-law) who met us at the airport and helped us pick our car up, to Georgios and his son who originally renovated the villa.

We didn't try the local taverna, but chose to spend the majority of our evenings at Georgiopolis, which is a very laid back resort with plenty of tavernas. When we did eat in, the kitchen facilties were ideal for preparing a meal and the outside seating area and barbecue were great.

The scenery was second to none and the wildlife kept us enthralled - especially the eagles.

The pool was a good size for small children. Our teenage girls enjoyed their independence in the third bedroom which has two single beds, its own kitchenette and bathroom, and is effectively a separate annexe, ideal for teens or adults. Instead of aircon it has an overhead fan.

Lovely villa

  • 5 of 5

We want to thank Antonia and family for making sure that their villa was lovely for us to stay in.

On arrival at the airport we were escorted to the newly rebuilt villa and greeted with a welcome pack that included the first of many tastings of Antonia's delicious homemade cake (she later even made vegan cake especially for us).

The house was immaculate and fully corresponded to our expectations, tastefully decorated using items from the family's original house, and well-functioning. There is a cosy living room with 2 arm chairs and a sofa.

The garden is pretty (there are even herbs and a few veg for you to help yourself incl a fig tree). The pool is just the right size for 2 small children. The view of the surrounding country side is very beautiful as the villa is high on a hill. We were happy to spend lazy days not even going out but just relaxing and enjoying the scenery from a lovely seating area with a pergola. Men in a vans selling bread and veg regularly stop outside so you can pop out and buy what you want.

There is one very traditional taverna within walking distance but Georgopolis is approx 15mins drive away and is full of tavernas and a new supermarket to keep you well stocked. There is a beach there which we didn't use, choosing to do a 20 min journey on the main road to lovely beaches at Almerida and Kalives.

Antonia is a very generous and thoughtful host even delivering us petrol during a fuel strike and warm bread to eat with our lunch! When we asked for something, she was always was quick to accommodate us. We warmly recommend this property.

Thank you again, and good luck and success for the future!
