Ever dreamed of whiling away the day in a hammock, swinging in fresh breezes at the edge of the ocean? Then welcome to HALE HONU, and this beautiful, romantic private oceanfront studio!

Hale Honu means 'House of the Sea Turtle,' aptly named for the 'family' of turtles frequently seen cruising and foraging in the waters directly in front of the house (known locally as 'turtle cove'). This very special oceanfront home is perfectly situated to offer privacy and unobstructed views of the Kona coastline.

Hale Honu is a two-story, 4 bedroom, 3 bath, truly OCEANFRONT home with spectacular, unobstructed views of the ocean from every room of the home. Hale Honu is designed with an upstairs 3 bedroom/two bath main house, and a LARGE 1 BEDROOM COMPLETE STUDIO, WITH BATH, KITCHEN AND SEPARATE PRIVATE ENTRANCE.

This website (VRBO 46951) is specifically for the separate rental of the studio-suite. The entire home can be seen at vrbo #34465. During peak seasons (winter) we do not generally offer the studio unless the main house (VRBO 34465) is already booked.

This unique ocean front gated property is surrounded by a beautiful lava rock wall and borders Pahoehoe Beach Park (an oceanfront beach park with shaded sitting areas, grass and a small beach that affords easy access to the ocean and great snorkeling. With less than a three minute walk to Magic Sands (aka 'Disappearing Sands) State Beach Park, a sugar white sand beach popular for bodysurfing & boogie boarding, Hale Honu is the closest oceanfront home to the best beach within 5 miles of Kailua-Kona village.

On the garden/ground level is our complete PRIVATE SUITE with a separate, secured entrance, oceanfront private covered lanai and garden hammock, and private oceanfront sitting and dining area. The large (650+ square feet) living space includes a heavenly king-size bed romantically shrouded in privacy sheers, and a living-sitting room with comfortable tropical décor furnishings and small flat screen TV. Included with the studio suite is Wifi, laundry facilities, a room safe and security alarm system.

The suite has a complete kitchen with cook-top and refrigerator. The bathroom is luxuriously appointed with marble tile and glass block, and a large walk in shower containing dual shower heads, (for sharing of course!). Windows and sliders encompass all of the makai (ocean side) walls, so you can simply let the ocean air in, or step out and be right at the edge of 2500 miles of unbroken Pacific Ocean blue!

In late 2014 we remodeled the studio suite, installing a state of the art sound isolation system with a suspended ceiling and acoustical blocking technology. This has eliminated almost all transmitted sounds and footsteps from the floor above.

Our large hot tub also at the ocean's edge is a unique experience! The hot tub and BBQ are in an outdoor common area of the property, and shared with the main house guests.

Hale Honu is located just 3.5 miles south of the heart of Kailua-Kona village, and two miles north of the Keauhou beach shopping and cinema complex. Hale Honu is close to everything but is in a world of its own!

The grounds of the property are nicely landscaped and totally private, enclosed within six foot lava stone walls on three sides, opening to the Big Blue Pacific on the makai (ocean) side. There are many comfortable places to sit and bask outside in the sun, or relax in the shade of the palms and tropical greenery.

When the sea is calm, snorkelers can explore the abundant reef and arches directly in front of the house; the ocean can be entered and exited from the lava outcropping on site when the surf is low or you can also enter the ocean from Pahoehoe Beach, right next to Hale Honu. You will likely get a visit from our resident turtle family when snorkeling! All pictures of sea life on this website were taken in the waters right in front of Hale Honu. Pahoehoe beach park also has a large lava shelf with excellent tidal pools for exploring at low tide. Almost daily a large pod of spinner dolphins comes Hale Honu. Sometimes they are close enough to swim out to. During the winter months, the waters of West Kona, including offshore from Hale Honu, are frequented by humpback whales.

Ocean side padded chaise lounges are provided. We have a separate laundry room for your convenience, and provide you with beach towels, rice mats, beach chairs and umbrellas, coolers and some snorkeling gear and boogie boards.

We strive to make our homes and your experience in them unique and filled with the spirit of aloha. You’ll find the home tastefully decorated, carefully maintained, and filled with lots of little extras (CD collection of Hawaiian music, binoculars, books on local history and cultural sites, etc.) Ipod/ smart phone compatible portable speakers are provided.

Please Note... We do offer Hale Honu for vacation rental in three different ways:

* Entire Home (including studio for a full four bedrooms and three baths)

* Upstairs Only (3 bedrooms and 2 baths)

* STUDIO/SUITE ONLY (one bedroom and one bath). We will generally release the studio only during peak seasons if the main house is already yet booked.

When the Suite and upper floor are rented to different parties, mutual respect of designated outdoor spaces assures privacy for everyone.

About Peter and Darla

This is us, Peter and Darla. We bought our first oceanfront condo (KKSR # 186) in 2002, on our first visit to the Big Island. (The Big Island definitely hooked us after several trips to the other islands!) We have been blessed to now offer four homes in Kona, including Hale Honu which we purchased in 2004. There is something about this particular spot on the ocean that everyone feels when they first walk on the site...maybe the turtles living in the cove, the spinner dolphins swimming by daily, or the calving humpbacks off shore every winter, but for us it was totally love at first sight. We have been improving Hale Honu every year, with major remodeling completed in 2008. We have a semi-permanent presence on the Big Island managing our Bed & Breakfast in Kona, The Hawaiian Oasis. Both of us are physicians, with continuing practices in California. We have a large extended family, three grown children...a fine arts painter, a photographer/film maker, and a fashion designer, and a growing family of pugs! We employ a full time employee and a handy man service in Kona to take care of all maintenance issues when we are on the mainland.

We all need 'down-time' when we can just breathe and let our bodies and minds relax and rejuvinate. We have really enjoyed your place. Have seen volcano, whales, dolphins, turtles, etc. Mostly great weather and a fantastic location on the island. Home could not be better located--and the views are unmatched. Ocean access is superb.

We hosted our daughter and her family for a week in March--we were here almost a month-- and they were wowed by the proximity to the ocean. We watched the sunset every evening from the lanais downstairs.

The home and studio are well furnished with everything you could possibly need for cooking, eating, playing on the beach or just relaxing.

Being right next to a small park is a real plus

Glad we found this place and would not stay anywhere else on this island.

Absolutely Fabulous

This was the first time we stayed in a vacation rental on the Big Island. It was perfectly wonderful! The privacy of this studio, the fabulous view, and gorgeous location was amazing. We ate every single meal on the lanai - in the morning watching the sunrise, and at dusk, watching the sunset, surrounded by tiki torches and the sound of the surf. The whole experience was so romantic and truly unforgettable. The apartment is well furnished; the kitchen well stocked; there are plenty of towels and every necessity imaginable. We snorkeled at the adjoining beach, and body surfed (using the boogie boards in the laundry room) at the next beach down the road. Although there are plenty of people around during the day at these beaches, we felt totally secluded in the quiet and privacy of our rented studio. We loved every moment. It was indescribable!

Hale Honu Studio

Now that we are back on the mainland I'd like to thank you for making your beautiful house available to us. It was my 70th birthday and I had decided to bring my entire family, my wife, my first son, his wife and their three children, my second son and his wife (they got married on July 1st) and my daughter. We all had a great time in the house, dining on the lanai, watching the sunset, going to beaches, the volcano and to Mauna Kea. Both the main house and the studio were ideal for our stay. Kitchen fully equipped, beach amenities, beds, towels, etc. all perfect. The proximity to the White Sands beach made it a favorite for the kids. We’ll have pleasant memories for a long time.

Awesome location. Great views. Private.

This is a really nice and clean place. We stayed on the bottom floor. The location is awesome and it's really convienient to get to multiple beaches by walking. You do hear some (limited) foot steps from the upstairs, but we felt this was really minor and never impacted the quality of our stay. Honestly we kept the screen door open and just listened to the crashing waves most of the time. I think the most impactful thing to share is that we would return to this rental.

Everything could ask for

We loved our stay at the Hale Honu studio! Convenient location to beaches, restaurants, etc. Very private (it may have helped that no one was staying upstairs) with beautiful ocean views (AND lots of turtles as advertised). Lot of amenities: beach gear, hammock, hot tub, stocked kitchen. Hope to return to Hale Honu on our next trip to Hawaii!

Lovely house right on the beach!

The Hale Honu studio was fantastic! The location is perfect, about 3.5 miles south of Kailua-Kona. It is literally RIGHT ON THE OCEAN! The kitchen was small but well-stocked, and the two burner stove was completely manageable for making easy meals. There's also a grill that we used most nights in order to avoid turning on the stove and heating things up inside!

There's plenty of space to spread out - breakfast nook, kitchen area, large and comfy bed, and a living area with TV, etc. (but really, who wants to watch the TV when you can watch the ocean?!). There was also plenty of patio furniture to sit and enjoy the view.

It was really nice that the studio had a small window-unit AC. Lower levels don't get as much of the nice ocean breeze, so the window unit kept the studio comfortable and made for a great nights sleep every night.

Much of the Big Island is lacking in beaches, but there is a great beach right next door to the studio that has great swimming and snorkeling.

Close proximity to Safeway, KTA, and Costco made for easy grocery shopping.

Probably not best for visitors without cars, unless you rented a bike. It is still 3.5 miles into town (for eating out, shopping, etc.), which is a pretty long walk! I'd recommend either having a car or renting bikes for the week.

Peter was fantastic to work with in getting everything organized and ready for our family trip!
