No other vacation home is located at the edge of the Atlantic Ocean with unique vantage points of city and sea.
All the benefits of a sea side property in out port Newfoundland with the convenience of being located in the city. See the downtown lights from the front deck. A 5-minute drive to downtown. Entrance to the East Coast Trail just feet away.
My sister, husband and I spent three AMAZING weeks this summer at the head light keeper's home at Fort Amherst. We had seen many photos, but nothing prepared us for the true beauty and historical significance of staying there.
Before you even get there, you feel welcomed. Peter and Nicole even picked up our grocery order for us and put it away! From the moment you remove the rope to the private driveway, drive up the single-lane roadway and spot the Fort Amherst lighthouse and the two light keepers' homes, you know you are going to experience something amazing!
Our home was beautiful, inside and out and was impeccable. Both of the homes have been lovingly restored by Nicole and Peter (the grandson of former light keeper Leo Power). It is obvious that the family connection to the lighthouse has created a special place in their hearts. They are extremely gracious hosts and were always on top of our every need, without intruding on our private time.
The views are beyond compare. Imagine having a bathroom with a view of Signal Hill and lying in bed at night, watching the lights of St. John's twinkling. We loved sitting on our front deck, watching ships go by, seeing tiny people from afar walking up Signal Hill, and chatting with passing tourists and locals. We saw a whale in the Narrows and icebergs off Cape Spear. We watched the sun rise over the ocean and set over St. John's. All right from our front yard. There were a few days where the fog was so thick we couldn't see Signal Hill and the foghorn would go off. How many people get to stay beside a working lighthouse?
There are tons of things to do within about a one-hour drive. Take a boat tour of the harbour or a whale- and bird-watching excursion. Experience the quaintness of Brigus and Petty Harbour. Enjoy a cold Iceberg beer at the Quidi Vidi Brewery. Take the ferry to Bell Island. Visit The Rooms and the Geo Centre. Head over to Cape Spear. Stop at Blackhead. Don't forget Signal Hill and Cabot Tower. Walk the narrow streets of the Battery. Get to know St. John's. It's a beautiful city. The homes of Jellybean Row are truly unique. There are lots of great places to eat and shop, especially on Water and Duckworth streets. Visit George Street for its night life...
Don't forget to give yourself time to just relax on the front deck of your home. You won't find anything nicer than that! We HIGHLY recommend a stay at Fort Amherst Vacation Homes. You will be creating an amazing memory for life.
My 9 and 10 year old boys and I stayed here with my father for 3 nights, it was the only 3 nights we could get, otherwise we would have stayed as long as possible. The lightkeeper residence is perfect. It was the perfect location for our family: close enough to St John's we could be downtown in 5 mins, and remote enough that we could see the ocean, icebergs and whales from our windows and the patio. It was magnificent!
Peter and Nicole have done a great job on this place. The house is a perfect size, the beds were so comfy, the bathrooms were clean and modern. The water pressure for showers was limited but this is due to the water coming from a cistern. Otherwise, this place is about as perfect as you can get.
We walked the east coast trail, signal hill (which we were across from at the home), took a boat tour, got screeched in and so much more. My boys felt immediately comfortable in the home the moment we arrived; they each picked out their rooms and never looked back. Best sleeps ever.
The house is perfect with ALL amenities you need. They will even organize a grocery drop off for you prior to your arrival.
We were sad to leave and will definitely stay again. Thank you Peter and Nicole for the trip of a lifetime and for the lovely accommodation. Your home was perfect and we loved every second.
We stayed four nights and found this house to be perfect for two couples as a base for touring St. John's and the Avalon peninsula. The location is unique; the view is stunning, and it really is one of the most photographed locations . We saw prints for sale in many shops showing the Fort Amherst site. The house is well-equipped with comfortable furniture, including very good beds and pillows, and the kitchen had everything we needed to make meals. I had been concerned about the fog horn, but after two misty nights when it went off every 20 seconds, I can say we all slept just fine. The horn is aimed away from the house, and is on the opposite side of the concrete lighthouse, so it's not that a problem inside the house. The internet is excellent too. When people ask me about my vacation, this house is the first thing I mention. Highly recommended.
This is a wonderful peaceful spot to get away from the hassle and bustle that life throws at you. It's a quiet location with beautiful views. The property owners are extremely helpful and great to deal with. The house was well managed and kept up very well. We had a wonderful time and the sun rises and sunsets were awesome as well. Would recommend to anyone and would stay again. Thanks for a wonderful time.
What a unique and wonderful place to explore St. John's and the surrounding area. You have privacy and quiet but are close to everything. The house is nicely decorated, well equipped and lots of room for 6 adults. The bathrooms are beautiful and the beds are so comfortable. We so enjoyed the views of the city, the harbour and the Atlantic while watching cruise ships come and go and being away from the noise of the city.
The view from every window is spectacular. This must be the best location for any rental in St. John's. Noting the shipping going in and out the harbour is an interesting pass time in itself.
Located in the oldest city in North America at the site of the first light house in Newfoundland and Labrador. Site is designated a national historic site.
