Moss Mountain Cottage is a clean, bright, spacious 3-bedroom/two bath cape-style home nestled on 5 private wooded acres in the village of Town Hill. Less than a mile away is the Town Hill Market, noted for its delicious homemade sandwiches and snacks, and where you can access the free Island Explorer shuttle. In addition to offering a great location, Moss Mountain Cottage offers a heated and partially air-conditioned home, with a bright, spacious and open living, kitchen and dining area, a fully equipped kitchen with all new appliances, a laundry room, a first floor bedroom with ¾ bath (shower), two large bedrooms upstairs that share a full bath with tub/shower combination. High speed wireless internet, TV and Blueray DVD player (no cable - local channels, Netflix and DVD library), games and books are all part of the package. Outside you will find a large yard where children can play, a large deck with charcoal grill and outside seating, and ample parking.
I built this house in 1988 as a single mother raising my lovely daughter who now lives in California (much too far away)! Now married, I live in downtown Bar Harbor with my husband, across the street from my three lively and lovely granddaughters. As young girls, my daughter and her cousin spent countless hours combing the backwoods of our property and collecting moss. Their grand plan was to make wreaths to sell to the tourists - leading to their fame and fortune! The small hill where they found the best moss, they named 'Moss Mountain.' Although they never sold a wreath (I'm not even sure they completed one), they spent hours in our backyard playing, laughing and planning their futures, as little girls love to do. I'll always treasure those days and those girls, and it is this fond memory that gave rise to the name 'Moss Mountain Cottage.'
Jean Sylvia purchased this house in 1988
Mount Desert Island has been my home since I graduated from college (I won't tell you how long ago that was) and I love it here. During the summer I hike and bike the trails of Acadia, comb the beaches to collect sea glass and sea-tumbled rocks, and take in all the island has to offer in unique shops and gourmet restaurants. During our cold and snowy winters, I take early morning walks or snowshoe on the breathtakingly beautiful (and quiet) carriage roads, spend time with my family and friends, and read some great books I've been meaning to get to all summer. When I travel away for any length of time and start yearning to see the mountains of Acadia and smell the sea air as I cross the Trenton bridge onto MDI - that's when I really know how much I appreciate and love my island home.
I love the quiet and the privacy of the homes around Indian Point. Sitting on the back deck and listening to the evening chatter of frogs in the bog, the morning birds that wake you instead of an alarm clock, eying the deer as they shyly peak out from the woods, and taking in the beauty of a full moon when it rises above the giant cedars - will all contribute to your restful vacation on MDI.
Great place to stay. Convenient to everything on Mt. Desert Island but quiet and out of the maddening crowds. Very clean, large bedrooms and kitchen filled with everything you need. Would highly recommend!
How refreshing it is to enjoy a week-long stay in a home vs a rental property or hotel. Although the owner, Jean, doesn't live there any longer, this place is like staying at her home. The write-up and reviews all indicate this, but I'm not sure I believed it. BELIEVE IT!
The cottage is a perfect layout for a family or a group. In our case it was two couples, and the home laid out perfectly for us to "live together" with plenty of room, plus, have separate and private sleeping and bathroom quarters.
The home is clean, well-appointed with everything you need, spacious--and I keep saying this--but it felt like a home vs a rental property.
The write ups and reviews all somewhat indicate the remoteness of the cottage. It is true. If you want to be on the water, this isn't it for you. If you want walking distance to eating joints or bars or shopping, this isn't it. However, if you want perfect, almost deafening silence (which we did), I'd challenge you to find a better arrangement. Keep in mind, everything, and I do mean everything you want to visit is a 15 minute drive or less from the cottage. It really is easy to navigate the island and Bar Harbor. We drove in to Bar Harbor several times to park our car for the day, then jumped on the Island Explorer.
LEARN the Island Explorer bus line. Although it didn't come to the cottage driveway, it's approximately a 3/4 mile walk to the highway where you can flag the bus down. Or, walk a bit further to the KOA campground (West--I think) or the grocery store (East--I think) to a bus stop. We discovered that if you call Island Explorer and let them know where you are, as long as you are on a designated route they will contact the next bus to be watching for you on the side of the road. That's a cool service, because the island can have heavy traffic. For those of us that soaked a couple too many sodas at our first lobster pound, that little phone call came in handy!
We invited Jean, the owner, to stop by for a quick intro...she did....how nice it was to hear about her life at the cottage when she and her family lived in it. Jean, your grandson was a big hit with us! What a precious little guy! Ask Jean how/why she named the cottage Moss Mountain!
Thanks again, Jean. Everything was perfect and exactly as you described (yes, we're the couples who ask A TON of questions---Jean was super patient with me as I asked questions).

We really enjoyed the property right at the first moment we turned on the driveway, very large yard, large back deck with grill and table.
We had wanted a home instead of a hotel and we got a very nice home, with 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms and laundry room.
Although we didn't cook in the house ( we ate out everyday) the kitchen was very well supplied with tons of pots and pans and etc.
We would definitely come back to stay if we are able to make it back to Maine.
Our friends have already asked for the rental info, which we gladly shared!
Very close to Bar Harbor, and our favorite lobster pound " The Happy Clam Shack ".
The owner was very friendly and wanted to make sure we had everything we needed.
My family of 4 stayed in Jean's Moss Mountain Cottage to visit Acadia Nation Park from June 18-23, 2016 . We were just so impressed when we were in by how clean the cottage was and felt so warm by a welcome basket which contained some sweet treats and fresh green leaves. We got everything we need during our stay : plenty of dishes and even driving direction to super market. Beds are very clean and I even didn't use my own stuff I brought from home. Only 10 minutes drive from the cottage to main entrance of Acadia Park. We really enjoy the beautiful Acadia and comfortable cottage. We look forward to staying Jean' cottage again next year.
The cottage and its surrounding property was simply a delight to stay in for a week at the beginning of the summer of 2016. At the end of this week, my family and I only wished we could stay for another week and enjoy the comfort, privacy and solace of its location, yet still easily accessible.
We found the cottage to be very clean and well-maintained, which included the porch, the flower beds and grass on the property. We had no trouble finding the house once we found the driveway and it's mailbox. The parking also comfortably fit three cars.
The way the house is built provides enough privacy to the people, but also allows for people to gather in the living room or in the big kitchen, something we have enjoyed very much. The cottage's kitchen is incredibly well-equipped, providing a feeling of coziness and ability to do one's own cooking without feeling any limitations. For our purposes it provided us with all the kitchen appliances and tools we needed, even for hosting a smaller celebration with friends of the family. The grill outside was also perfect for a barbecue.
Jean, the owner, was incredibly welcoming, made us feel at home right from the beginning and provided us with simply everything we could request be it information about the island, good spots to dine, or information about the house.
It is true that one does need a car to get to the hiking trails or do some grocery shopping, but the driving is never a big amount and it is a small cost for the wonderful sense of peace after a long day hiking the peaks of Acadia.
My family and I simply cannot spell enough how wonderful the time at the house for us was and once we get to Mount Desert Island again, we will be looking forward to booking with Jean and her lovely cottage.
Thank you very much,
Roman and family
We absolutely loved this home. It's huge! The bedrooms have plenty of room to move around and put out all your stuff, the kitchen is nice sized and well-stocked with any and all cooking implements. Having two bathrooms makes our travels a whole lot easier. It's in a perfect location, quiet and off the main road, but within a short distance of downtown Bar Harbor and the Acadia National Park.
Things I loved about the home:
1. A night light in the bathroom. I've taken to traveling with my own but Jean had one already in place.
2. A big rug in the bathroom. It's annoying to come out of the shower and have to stand on an itty-bitty rug to dry off.
3. Coffee in the freezer. We came in late and it was super nice to be able to make a few cups of coffee right away the next morning.
4. Washer dryer. Because we play in the dirt and mud.
5. Lots of storage in the bedrooms and bathrooms.
6. Uncluttered space.
7. A great deck!
8. Lights and plugs everywhere.
9. Jean was incredibly easy to work with, and even talked to me on the phone. Super nice and professional, gave us several travel and eating tips, made me feel at ease with this rental.
Things I loved about Mount Desert Island:
1. Blueberry stuff. Pies, scones, jelly... yum!
2. Craft beer. Yum again.
3. Acadia National Park. We could spend another week hiking trails and still not have seen them all. So nicely laid out! Spend a few minutes at the visitor center, watch the little movie, get the map of the trails. Grab all the maps you can.
4. Ocean, pine trees, rocks, trails, cool air, more rocks.
5. Local artwork.
6. A small airport in Bangor.
7. Friendly residents.
This was one of our best vacations ever, and we plan to come back. And of course, we'll stay at Moss Mountain Cottage!
Moss Mountain Cottage, open year-round, is centrally located, no more than 15 minutes away from the entrance to Acadia National Park, the Ellsworth shopping centers, and all the picturesque towns and villages that make up Mount Desert Island. Our cottage is tucked away on five private wooded acres where you can relax after a long day of hiking, biking or cross-country skiing one of the many historic carriage roads or mountains of Acadia; after a more restful day taking in the breathtaking views atop Cadillac Mountain, cruising the waters of Frenchman Bay, or visiting the stunning Thuya, Azalea,, or Rockefeller Gardens. If you'd like to stay closer to home, only a mile from the cottage, you will find the Nature Conservancy’s Indian Point Blagden Preserve, where osprey nest and seals bask on the rocks at low tide. Great Long Pond - three miles from the cottage - is where each summer you can swim, canoe, kayak, launch your boat to water ski or fish, or to enjoy ice-skating in the winter. There is summer golfing or winter sledding at the historic Kebo golf course; Pirate’s Cove miniature golf and Wild Acadia Fun Park for the kids; Monday and Thursday evening band concerts on Bar Harbor's village green; and matinees or evening plays at the Acadia Repertory theater. In each of the island's picturesque villages you will find quaint shops where local artisans showcase their work, and any number of restaurants and bars that feature lobster and other locally harvested seafood dishes, paired with award-winning and locally-brewed beer or wine.
