About Jean Sylvia
I built this house in 1988 as a single mother raising my lovely daughter who now lives in California (much too far away)! Now married, I live in downtown Bar Harbor with my husband, across the street from my three lively and lovely granddaughters. As young girls, my daughter and her cousin spent countless hours combing the backwoods of our property and collecting moss. Their grand plan was to make wreaths to sell to the tourists - leading to their fame and fortune! The small hill where they found the best moss, they named 'Moss Mountain.' Although they never sold a wreath (I'm not even sure they completed one), they spent hours in our backyard playing, laughing and planning their futures, as little girls love to do. I'll always treasure those days and those girls, and it is this fond memory that gave rise to the name 'Moss Mountain Cottage.'
Jean Sylvia purchased this House in 1988
Why Jean Sylvia chose Bar Harbor
Mount Desert Island has been my home since I graduated from college (I won't tell you how long ago that was) and I love it here. During the summer I hike and bike the trails of Acadia, comb the beaches to collect sea glass and sea-tumbled rocks, and take in all the island has to offer in unique shops and gourmet restaurants. During our cold and snowy winters, I take early morning walks or snowshoe on the breathtakingly beautiful (and quiet) carriage roads, spend time with my family and friends, and read some great books I've been meaning to get to all summer. When I travel away for any length of time and start yearning to see the mountains of Acadia and smell the sea air as I cross the Trenton bridge onto MDI - that's when I really know how much I appreciate and love my island home.
What makes this House unique
I love the quiet and the privacy of the homes around Indian Point. Sitting on the back deck and listening to the evening chatter of frogs in the bog, the morning birds that wake you instead of an alarm clock, eying the deer as they shyly peak out from the woods, and taking in the beauty of a full moon when it rises above the giant cedars - will all contribute to your restful vacation on MDI.

Clean Comfortable Great location
Owner was fantastic and provided a lot of little extras. House was clean and quiet. Beautiful wild flowers in the front yard.
Thanks Critia. You and your friends were fantastic as well. I had company arriving the day you left and the cottage was left so clean that it made for an easy turnover for our next guests, also arriving that same day. You are welcome back anytime!
We had a great experience staying at Moss Mountain Cottage. Everything was very clean and organized and any questions that we had were outlined in a great binder that Jean provided along with brochures and ideas of things to do during our stay. House was super cozy and it made everything super convenient! Definitely felt like a home away from home!
Thanks for such a nice review. We do our best to make our guests feel at home while visiting MDI and to make sure they aren't searching for anything they need during their stay at the cottage. It was certainly our pleasure to host you and your family - you were terrific guests and would be welcome back to Moss Mountain Cottage anytime you visit MDI in the future. Happy Holidays!
Perfect location just off the beaten path but close enough to Bar Harbor for shopping or restaurants
Jean was so easy to work with and her personal touch to the cottage was such a warm and genuine plus. We loved the cottage, it had everything that we needed and the cleanliness was over the top. We all came down with the flu and took one full day to rest and it was so comfy that we felt at home. We explored the island for 4 full days and looked forward at the end of the day to return to moss mountain cottage. Thank you Jean!!
Thanks Shannon for this wonderful review and all the kind words you left in our guest book. I was so pleased to hear how well the cottage worked for you, especially while you were recuperating from the flu. You were perfect guests and went above and beyond in how well you left the cottage, making cleanup on our end go very smoothly. It would be our pleasure to host your family and friends on your next visit to MDI.
Perfect relaxing getaway
We had a great experience at Moss Mountain cottage. We came to MDI to run the MDI half marathon and explore Acadia. The cottage was the perfect place to relax and use as home base between adventures. Super quiet, clean, well stocked and inviting. We felt at home the minute we stepped in. We wouldn't change a thing.
Thanks Shannon for such a nice review. I was happy to have the opportunity to meet you and Mike just prior to your departure and to hear first-hand that the cottage worked out so well for you. We would be more than happy to host your next visit to MDI - you were wonderful guests.
Moss Mountain Cottage: A beautiful home in very private and quiet spot
This was my second stay at Moss Mountain Cottage (MMC) and I'm ready to go back. It's close enough to all of the attractions on Mount Desert Island but far enough away to relax in a private setting. The house is very roomy and had everything (and then some) you need to feel like you're already home. Comfortable beds mean a lot and MMC has them. A great place to be.
Dave and his friends were great guests who I had the pleasure of meeting a few days prior to their departure. After bringing his wife to the cottage last fall, I was anxious for us to meet in person. Not only were he and his friends appreciative of the extra thought we try to put into welcoming our guests and making their stay comfortable, they also made the transition for the next guests go smoothly by following the few rules we have and leaving the place clean and tidy. All are welcome back to Moss Mountain Cottage anytime they visit MDI.
This cottage was very clean, surprisingly roomy, well stocked with appliances, etc., and very reasonably priced. Highly recommend it.
Thanks Bart - I'm so pleased that you enjoyed the cottage. In addition I was pleased to have to spend so little time cleaning and tidying up after your departure. I would also highly recommend you and your friends as guests to any other VRBO host. and you are welcome to return to Moss Mountain Cottage anytime you are visiting MDI.
Moss Mountain Cottage, open year-round, is centrally located, no more than 15 minutes away from the entrance to Acadia National Park, the Ellsworth shopping centers, and all the picturesque towns and villages that make up Mount Desert Island. Our cottage is tucked away on five private wooded acres where you can relax after a long day of hiking, biking or cross-country skiing one of the many historic carriage roads or mountains of Acadia; after a more restful day taking in the breathtaking views atop Cadillac Mountain, cruising the waters of Frenchman Bay, or visiting the stunning Thuya, Azalea,, or Rockefeller Gardens. If you'd like to stay closer to home, only a mile from the cottage, you will find the Nature Conservancy’s Indian Point Blagden Preserve, where osprey nest and seals bask on the rocks at low tide. Great Long Pond - three miles from the cottage - is where each summer you can swim, canoe, kayak, launch your boat to water ski or fish, or to enjoy ice-skating in the winter. There is summer golfing or winter sledding at the historic Kebo golf course; Pirate’s Cove miniature golf and Wild Acadia Fun Park for the kids; Monday and Thursday evening band concerts on Bar Harbor's village green; and matinees or evening plays at the Acadia Repertory theater. In each of the island's picturesque villages you will find quaint shops where local artisans showcase their work, and any number of restaurants and bars that feature lobster and other locally harvested seafood dishes, paired with award-winning and locally-brewed beer or wine.
