When life closed some doors, it allowed other ones to open and that is when I made the move from London,Ontario Canada with my 2 dogs and 2 cats to my new home on Salt Spring Island.
As friends have said, the 'house found me'. It was love at first sight with the friends and of course, the west coast lifestyle!
In my other life, I have been a social worker, a municipal councillor, a teacher, a chef, a TV host and producer,a travel writer, a volunteer and over the past 10 years, a hospitality advisor with a Canadian not-for profit organization working all over the to forget, a wife and mother to 4 children.
Susan Wetmore purchased this cottage in 2009
Sometimes you have to be careful what you wish for.
All my life I wanted to live by the sea, especially on Canada's west coast. I wanted to go to the snow, not it come to me.
As well, I had a dream that one day I would live in New Zealand again but that is on hold at the present time. Within 2 hours of seeing this house, I made an offer to purchase and have never regretted it.This house is as close as I can get to New Zealand!
It overlooks the sea so that the dogs and I can walk at low tide, checking out the variey of starfish, molluscs, flotsam and jetsam that the sea brings in on the whales swim in my 'front yard', joined by sea lions, seals and river otters.
Crab boats check their catches regularly.Tugs ply the waters hauling huge loads of lumber and pulp, sailboats skim along no matter the weather as do the pleasure craft, especially in the summer months.
I see the sunrise over the neighbouring island of Galiano, and then reflect on the sunset on the cliffs later in the day.To cap off the view, at night we see the reflection of the lights from Vancouver and on a perfect day, we can enjoy the majesty of the snowcapped coastal mountain range on the mainland.
Finding this property, making it my home and then sharing it with guests from around the world is truly a dream come true!
What I absolutely love about this home is that it is the perfect home for all the entertaining that I do. With the french doors open and the deck set up for summer entertaining, I can entertain in a million dollar waterfront view.It doesn't get any better than this!
Susan- thank you so much for the experience in the great little cottage. Your sightseeing tips were excellent and you made us feel right at home. The ocean view is fabulous and the weather was perfect (no bugs!) Enjoy the rest of the summer and we'll be sure to return.
Susan's place is beautiful, brimming with art. The bed was very comfortable and the kitchen had everything we needed. Susan is most welcoming and helpful. We also enjoyed the 5 chickens, 2 cats and 1 dog on the property. It was a terrific place to stay. Oh, and I almost forgot to mention the fruit, coffee, baked goodies, etc. that Susan provided for our first morning- yummy and plentiful. Thanks!
We enjoyed many things on Salt Spring: walking at Ruckles Park, visiting the goat cheese studio, listening to live music at the Treehouse restaurant, watching a movie at the old community hall- just to mention a few.
Salt Spring Island has been described as the 'jewel of the Canadian Gulf Islands'. Not only is it the largest in size but also the most populated and the most popular for tourists. It is renowned for its beauty, for its history, and its food and wine.
Both the Saturday and Tuesday markets have attracted visitors for years...for fresh food, arts and crafts, they shouldn't be missed. Road side food stands also offer locally grown organic food and eggs, not to overlook the 3 wineries where one can sit and do a tasting!
Artists of all genres live on the island- writers, painters, sculptors, jewelers, musicians and actors all call Salt Spring home. Numerous galleries support the local artists so taking home a piece of art is a dream come true.
As well, there is a self-drive studio tour that takes you right in to the working venues of these artists.
An activity that is very popular is to discover the marine wildlife in the Gulf Islands by boat, as well as tour the other Gulf Islands, whether it is just for a day or an overnight visit.
whale watching, kayaking, sail boat charters are all available as well as renting a bicycle to get around. Watch out for those hills.
Salt Spring Parks and Recreation in partnership with Island Pathways have well marked hiking trails, from the easy saunter to the more strenuous, with views to die for!
