This is a wonderful cottage secluded at the end of a wooded peninsula that seperates Lake Michigan from Portage Lake. You have a private sand beach and dock on Portage Lake and a walk less than a block to beautiful sand beaches on Lake Michigan. Build a campfire on either beach. From your cottage you can watch the sun rise looking 3 miles east across Portage Lake or turn to the west and watch the sun set over Lake Michigan. The main level of the home has the kitchen, dining room table, and living room. The living has a HD TV with cable service, and a gas fireplace. The home has a laundry room with washer & dryer. There is also cable internet with wi-fi. The master bedroom, is also on the main level, and has a king bed, full bath, HD TV, and a window a/c. Upstairs is 3 more bedrooms, two with queen beds, and the third with 3 twin beds. Upstairs also has another full bath and a futon in the hallway.

Great Place to Stay - Can't beat the location

  • 5 of 5

Great place to stay. Walk to Lake Michigan, right on the channel, and your own private beach on Portage Lake. The backyard is great activities and barbecuing. We had fires on the beach and walked down to the pier/Lake Michigan every day. Kept our boat at the dock and had a great week.

The house is nice, clean and sleeps plenty.

Awesome location great service communication small rooms

  • 4 of 5

The on site manager was awesome and communicated well, the location was amazing with Lake Michigan and Portage Lake on both parts of the property. House was clean and had all the usual amenities. HOWEVER: If it is more than one family you better flip a coin for the master bedroom downstairs. Otherwise upstairs there are 3 bedrooms, yes, but they are small(Queen) and the mattresses need to be upgraded. You cant even fit 2 suitcases on the floor in one of the rooms! The one bedroom has 2 singles which is fine for kids but the other 2 rooms are small. Maybe that doesn't matter to you but if you're spending this kind of money have the bedroom talk with all involved if there is more than one adult couple, because the master bedroom is worth more. If that's not your situation then game on this place rocks!! I can't wait to come back!

Walsh Cottage

  • 4 of 5

My family wanted to share our experience at this cottage. I was concerned with the previous review that mentioned mice but we figured we would deal with when we got there. Problem seemed to be solved. Our food was safe for the 10 days we were there. We expected a certain rustic feel which is common in some of the older cottages. Another complaint was the small bedrooms, the three upstairs rooms are small but perfectly adequate for a family that doesn't spend much time in their rooms on vacation. It is a cottage with character. There may be a bit too much "stuff" but most of the cottages in Onekama have been used by multi-generational families for years because once you get a chance to enjoy Portage Lake you want to come back time and again. You really can't beat the location.

I can't begin to express how much we enjoyed our stay at Walsh Cottage. The location is PERFECT! The private beach on Portage Lake was wonderful. We had 6 children, ages 9 to 19, with us. They spent hours and hours swimming and even snorkeling in Portage Lake and playing on the sand beach. We had four jet skis with us and had no problem securing them all to the dock when they weren't in use. The large yard was the perfect spot for many meals and games of cards. The view of Portage Lake, the channel and Lake Michigan are amazing! The walk to the Lake Michigan beach was literally a three minute walk. We took in many sunsets over Lake Michigan during our week stay. We also spent a good amount of time on the Lake Michigan beach.

We had two large SUVs with trailers and had no trouble parking them in the large drive. The inside of the house was clean and tidy. We had no trouble with hot water or mice. In fact, we had food out on the counters all week with not one sign of mice. Sleeping arrangements were more than adequate for 10 of us. One of the bedrooms was a bit small, but it wasn't an issue since all it was used for was sleeping.

We had one rainy day, so we took the short drive to Manistee and spent the afternoon exploring. (The history museum is incredible!) Another day we enjoyed Frankfort, another easy drive, for a few hours before we came back to the house to spend hours on the beach.

If we have opportunity we will definitely be returning to Walsh Cottage!!

The property location was indeed excellent. The dock with lift was a very nice solution for having our boat along. The house was clean when we arrived. Also, we had no trouble parking 5 cars and a boat trailer on the property for the week. We enjoyed the beaches and the views very much. The kids really enjoyed playing in the large yard. As far as sleeping 11, the available futon is in the upstairs hallway with no privacy at all. If everyone wants to keep their dignity, this sleeps 9.

That being said, when we tried to give little kids a bath on the first night, there was no hot water. Apparently the new water heater was not properly installed and the safety shut-off was doing its job. This problem occurred multiple times during the week.

However the main issue for the week was the vermin. We awoke the first morning to discover that ALL the groceries we had stowed in cabinets or left on counters had been ravaged by mice. And droppings were left all over the counters and inside the cabinets. We tried storing items in the oven to keep the mice out, however apparently they have no fear of a pilot light as they helped themselves again and left their "evidence" behind. We purchased several kinds of traps from the local hardware, which we thoroughly enjoyed emptying while on vacation. The pest company that came in to inspect confirmed that the basement was infested with mice and has been for quite some time. We threw out several hundred dollars of groceries throughout the week which I believe to be utterly inexcusable.

Bottom line, this place is a health hazard in it's current condition. There is no way that a premium rate should be charged for a location with this kind of rodent problem. It's absolutely shameful.

Not impressed.

  • 2 of 5

We came into the house with 3 adults and 2 teenagers. It may say that it sleeps 11 but it felt VERY cramped with 5! The upstairs bedrooms were extremely small and were not comfortable at all. The room my husband and I shared you had to turn sideways to get around the bed which squeaked with every turn throughout the night. The photos in the listing do not accurately portray how small the upstairs was.

The view from the house was ok. We did enjoy the small walk to Lake Michigan and had fun making a campfire on the beach.
