Renters' quotes from our guest book:
'We really enjoyed our time here. So relaxing, just being able to sit on the deck and look out on the lake. We BBQ'd most evenings. We made use of the kayaks, which was fun. We spent a couple of days touring the local battlefields, well worth a visit. Fredericksburg was also worth a visit. '--from Essex, UK.
'We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and exploring parts of Virginia we've never visited. We loved kayaking around the lake and the wonderful tennis courts, too.' --from Falls Church, VA
'We had a wonderful family vacation weekend fishing, swimming, using the sauna and the lake. We wanted to stay longer. We visited James Madison's Montpelier. It was such fun. Thank you for your hospitality!'
We have owned this property since Lake of the Woods's earliest days, and built our home as a weekend getaway in 1977. We have recently refurbished it. Now that we are retired, we still enjoy using it as a getaway from life in Washington, DC. Lake of the Woods provides a woodsy environment that is still within a convenient drive to Washington, Civil War battlefields, movies, entertainment and restaurants.
Pam Crosslin purchased this house in 1977
We lived in a condo when we built this house, so it was, in effect, our first house as a married couple. We were lucky to find an architect who could take our ideas and transform them into a house that was perfect for our needs and for this site.
We have preserved our property in a natural state, and the feel of a rustic, but very comfortable cabin inside. In colder months, we enjoy reading or watching television in front of the wood-burning fireplace, and entertaining friends on the deck in summertime. Over the years, our friends have enjoyed visiting Lake of the Woods and taking advantage of its many fine amenities.
The house is accurately represented on VRBO. The photos and descriptions are factual. However, the rental is listed as Non-Smoking but either the owners are smokers, or we were victimized by the previous renters. When i put my foot on the bottom step of the stairs to the front door I said, "This house is owned by smokers." I could tell before even setting foot inside the house.
Upon entering, my eyes started to burn and the odor of cigarettes permeated the entire interior. We purchased Febreez Air Effects and Febreez fabric treatment and after a very thorough treatment we were able to stay in the house. Later that day we spent several hours away and when we returned, the house again smelled strongly of cigarettes. We treated the entire house a second time and things improved, but every time we spent any time away, the house still smelled strongly of cigarettes when we returned. We tried leaving the windows open while away but nothing helped. If you are sensitive to cigarette smoke odor then make sure the owners have the house completely cleaned and deodorized before you agree to rent. I'm sorry for the poor review. Otherwise the house is very nice, but is is not a no smoking home.
Property is close to several National Park Service-owned civil war battlefields (Chancellorsville, Wilderness, Spotsylvania Courthouse and Fredericksburg), as well as other sites in Fredericksburg, Montpelier and Monticello. 45 minutes to the Kings Dominion theme park. Also close to water sports activities on the Rappahannock River.
