Situated on the south coast of Madeira, the villa is near a variety of local amenities including restaurants, pharmacies, banks and supermarkets.
Ponta do Sol is renowned for its sunny climate, rustic architecture and friendly locals. The sunsets are truly magnificent from this picturesque village by the sea.
We are a small, family run business and would be happy to answer any questions you may have. Please make sure to check out our reviews below.
Casa do Retiro was created as a Family business. Our passion is to receive travellers all around the world in our villas and welcome them and make them feel they're home! We work hard together to assure our guests have the most luxurius stays in the most idilic places - Madeira Island and Porto Santo Island.
We bought this land because our family grew there. The monument in front of our villa was built by our grand mother in order to honor all women who have breast cancer because herself survived after being diagnosed with breast cancer in a young age.
The quiet location and standard of facilities at the villa enabled us to chill and relax. Ideally placed to travel to most places on the island.
We were in Madeira for Christmas and New Year with our large family including a 15 month old.
The directions given were clear, Beatriz met us upon arrival along with Mrs Garcia (the housekeeper) to go through the house and how everything worked. A nice selection of cake, drinks and snacks were left for us to use.
Casa Do Retiro is a beautiful house set in the hills above Ponta Do Sol, the games room and outside bbq area were constantly in use and meant that the family could all be together having fun. The hot tub was lovely and warm but it was a shame that the pool was too cold to use (maybe we were just not brave enough).
Mrs Garcia was a real trooper and discreet - an absolute star, she kept the house in order for us.
As the house is in quite a remote village, the closely located supermarket, Farmacia and Pizzeria were a godsend and the food was actually very good quality, you can either order a takeaway (have a beer while waiting) or eat in.
Madeira itself is stunning - Café New Era in Calheta is worth a visit along with fishing/whale and dolphin watching boat trip with Franki (located next door). New Years Eve in Funchal is a must if you are visiting at this time of year.
Beatriz, Tito and Christina.... Casa Do Retiro is home from home and we thoroughly enjoyed every moment. You are a lovely family and it was a pleasure to meet you all, because of your hard work and commitment, we all thoroughly enjoyed our Christmas holiday. The Christmas tree and gifts were a real surprise and we will treasure our memories in Madeira.
During the week of easter, we had a lovely time in Casa Do Retiro. We were six adults and four kids and felt there were lot of space in the beautiful house and garden. Everything were perfect and there was everything we needed. The pool was nice and clean and the same with the jacusi. We got an amazing welkome of the owners and speciel thanks to the very nice house keeper who made the stay very easy and comfortable . If we get the possibility once again, we would like to come back. We give our best recommendations to the owners and the house.

We have just returned from a second fantastic week in this holiday home. This is the first time we have ever decided to return to the same place on holiday, which I think speaks volumes about this wonderful house. This time we not only went with our 3 children (10,8 and 6) but also my Father and Mother-in-law, who also loved it. There was plenty of space for us all. The pool heating, along with sunny weather let us swim every day in February! The hot tub was a lovely treat after a swim. The gardens are beautiful and relaxing with the birds chirping and gorgeous views down to the sea. The game room provided lots of entertaining games of pool and table football. We enjoyed a barbecue and eating outside, but equally cosy evenings by the log fire, with the Madeira wine and Honey cake which was left for us. Mrs Garcia does a super job of cleaning every day, keeping the villa immaculate. The villa is in a super location for exploring the island - Funchal, the North coast and several walks are all within a half hour's drive. The Pizzaria/takeaway, supermarket, bank and children's play area were all used as they are literally a 2 minute walk away. In fact, the only downside is that we really want to keep this gem of a house secret, so it is available when we next want to book it...
We recently spent a most enjoyable sixteen days in Casa do Retiro.
We had carefully selected the villa from a number of villas on different web sites and this one stood out immediately as the one we would like to stay in.
And after also taking into account the glowing reviews the house has received we can only say that our expectations were more than realised.
The house is a large and very comfortable one, with many personal touches of the Noronha family. The family itself, Tito and Christina, were present in person as we arrived, together with M. Graça, who very discreetly cleans the house and does the washing and washing up on a daily basis. They gave us a very warm welcome indeed and showed us round the house in person explaining the history of the family. It was very clear that they were proud to be able to show us their house and share it with us. Christina had also prepared a wonderful bowl of fruit and a bottle of Madeira wine as a welcome. Later on during the first week she also brought us a genuine Madeira home-made bolo de mel cake which was absolutely delicious. She even shared her recipe with us.
The house was in tip-top condition and when we noticed that the kettle was leaking it was replaced the next day!
In the end we counted ourselves lucky that our return flight was delayed by three days, giving us an extra three days in this wonderful villa.
The villa is situated on the south coast of Madeira and is ideally placed to access many interesting places. We especially remember our trip from Sao Vicente to Santana for its absolutely breath-taking scenery along the north coast. The narrow road with its many twists and turns is not for the faint-hearted though!
We have stayed in villas in Crete, Italy, Portugal, Spain and France over the last ten years but this villa was unmatched by any of them.
Thank you Tito, Christina and M. Graça for giving us such a wonderful time!
We thought that this rental looked too good to be true - and yet our stay at Casa Do Retiro surpassed our expectations. We are already looking forward to our return visit, having just got home.
It is a challenge to find a relaxing holiday with two young children (one nearly 4, the other almost 18 months) and although opting for a villa was going to provide the flexibility we wanted, we were a little concerned that we would sacrifice on relaxation. We should not have worried - the family did everything possible to prepare the house for our arrival (even getting a couple of new steps for our eldest daughter to access the sinks and toliets), providing a huge array of drinks and fresh, exotic local fruits and setting up cots in a number of bedrooms so we could choose the best space (our daughters loved sharing the pink room). Beatriz even organised a birthday party for my husband, much to the delight of him and our girls, and the amazing themed cake lasted the whole 10 days!
Furthermore, the housekeeper, Mrs Graca, discreetly took care of washing up and washing (our daughters created lots!) as well as cleaning, giving us a proper rest. She even set up a matress and blankets on the floor next to the bed in case our eldest rolled out during the night (but she slept better than she's ever slept before!)
We can honestly say that we have not enjoyed such a relaxing, refreshing holiday since before our children were born. There is plenty to see and do on the island (highlights included cable car in Funchal, long lazy lunch near Santana, agapanthus and eucalyptus forests on the way to the Paul de Serra, pools at Santa Moniz, summit of the second highest mountain), the food is delicious (Apollo in Funchal, pizzas from around the corner, sea food at the beach bars in Ponta Do Sol and Calheta) and the people are welcoming and friendly (making a lovely fuss of the little ones).
The house itself is a privilege to stay in; a very warm place because of the inspiring family history.
It is a testimony to the owners of the house, to Mrs Graca, and to the unspolit natural beauty of Madeira itself that our days were filled with fun and our nights were longer than we could possibly have hoped for. The action-packed days and blackout curtains even gave us a number of long lie-ins. What more could a family with young children ask for!
We would not hesitate in recommending this property - provided that we can still get a booking when we next need to recharge!
