Our cozy, air conditioned home offers you 2 bedrooms (full size bed in one, queen size bed in the other) and an air pillow sofa bed for up to 6 guests at a time. You will love the tiled bathroom, open kitchen area with garbage disposal and dishwasher, and having laundry facilities. The main living area offers a 50" plasma HDTV using DirecTV, Charter internet, and floor to ceiling bookcases filled with books, DVDs and CDs. The back yard patio is the perfect place for you to roast marshmallows in the free-standing fire pit, grill a yummy barbecue or enjoy a morning coffee while you relax and plan your next adventure in Leelanau County.
We, Carol and Jim Ashmore, are excited to be opening our home to you. Carol was born and raised in Traverse City while Jim came from Stockbridge. For over 30 years we lived and worked down state. Returning to Leelanau County and being able to live here have been a dream come true for us.
Against the Wind is our personal residence from November 1st to May 1st of the year. In May we vacate the house for our summer guests.
ATW also has a year round rental, with a separate entrance and separate driveway on the lower level of the house. Our tenants are a young couple expecting twins in October. They work hard, are not "party animals." In two reviews a guest said they heard faint noises from the lower level, but nothing that would prevent them from renting from us again. Personally, lower level noise has never been a problem. When we renovated ATW we made special efforts to sound proof the house as much as possible.
Jim Ashmore purchased this house in 2012
Family roots and a deep appreciation for the beautiful natural landscape of the area have always been a magnet for us. Carol's family has been in Leelanau County since the mid-1800's. Her mother was born and raised in Northport. Many of her cousins still live in the area. We enjoy walking the many beaches, swimming and looking for Petoskey stones, riding our bikes and sometimes just going for a ride. There is no other place we want to call home!
We're sure you will enjoy the morning sun streaming in the living room window and the evening sun warming the back yard patio. Within walking distance you will find the friendly community of Lake Leelanau with three very different places to eat, a distillery, a winery, a coffee shop and a pastry shop. Nearby Suttons Bay offers a lovely cinema and unique shopping. Historic Fishtown on Lake Michigan is a five mile drive to Leland. Traverse City, with all it offers the vacationer, is only 20 miles away. Perhaps you would like a day trip to the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in Glen Arbor or an evening outing in Peshawbestown at the Leelanau Sands Casino. Our central location gives you a multitude of options, all close to home. And when you return home from your day's adventures, you will feel the comfort and relaxation that only home can give you.
This home is perfectly situated to explore the area & that"s exactly what we did! Swimming, kayaking, dune climb, bicycling on the Heritage Trail are just some of the activities we were able to enjoy. Glen Arbor, Leland/Fishtown, Northport & Suttons Bay are all so close we were able to see them all leisurely while poking through the shops. In the evening it was relaxing to read the amazing collection of books in the house--we especially liked learning about the history of the surrounding area.
The Ashmore's are so welcoming, the house is very clean and stocked full of everything we needed or forgot :). Being able to bring our dog on vacation, and not having to take time to clean before we left were extra perks that made us want to be return customers!! Thank you for a wonderful vacation spot.
This was the perfect location for us, as our daughter's wedding was just down the road at the Crooked Creek Ranch. Located within walking distance to town. We appreciated the cleanliness, organized and well stocked home! Will stay there again to vacation the Leelanau area....
Our family stayed at "Against the Wind" vacation rental for a week this past July (2016). This cute, cozy cottage feels more like a home with all the amenities and perks provided! The kitchen was fully stocked with every spice, condiment, and appliance or gadget you might need for cooking away from home. The beds were surprisingly very comfortable and the place was extremely neat and clean. The milkshake machine was a fun "extra" that our kids enjoyed. Although not located right on Lake Leelanau, it is centrally-located with many shops and little restaurants within walking distance. The owners were very hospitable and kind, making sure we had everything we needed. This place exceeded our expectations. We truly enjoyed our stay and hope to return next summer!
Nice 2-bedroom ranch with plenty of room. Large living room. Enjoyed morning coffee and evening drinks and dinner on the patio. Walking distance to a local pub/restaurant, neighborhood market, marina at The Narrows, and to a local distillery. Two boat launches within 5 minutes of the house.
Would recommend to cyclists seeking to ride the rolling tree-lined roads and paths in the area, or to enjoy the waters of South lake Leelanau and/or North Lake Leelanau.
Nice little community!
5 Plein-Air artists (4 women and one very brave guy) came and stayed at this lovely home for a working vacation. We painted outside in the area, from Suttons Bay to Leland, every day, all day. We all had our laptops and worked on the reliable wireless provided.
We cooked most of our meals. The kitchen was so stocked with condiments and spices, that it was easy to make everything. And two refrigerators! Which was excellent for us. The oven & stove worked great! It took us a bit of time to find the control for the garbage disposal (hidden behind the very versatile coffeemaker). The dishes/pots and pans were clean and useful. There was an issue with the dishwasher leaving stuff in the top rack dishes at first, but the owner came right away and solved that. There was plenty of room for all 5 of us to gather around the dining table to eat and play the provided games. The one night that we ate out, we gathered on the wonderful outside backyard deck w/table beforehand and had appetizers and drinks. Then we strolled down the block and ate at Dick’s Pour house.
The queen bed was very comfortable for the 2 of us that slept in there. In the double bed room, the 2 girls brought along some kind of set up bed so they each had their own. There was plenty of room in there for them. The guy that slept on the pull out in the living room didn’t want to deal with whatever you had to blow up. (It looked pretty simple to me, all automatic.) So he slept just on the sofa (with the provided bedding) that you sit on. Said it was very comfortable.
The bathroom (only one for the 5 of us, but it worked out okay) was also stocked with everything you could think of for emergencies. It was great. The shower was pristine and lots of hot water. Nice towels and a hook for each of us.
The 4 women agreed we would do it again even with 6 people and thought it was great with usable and plenty of space. The guy thought it was a little cramped for 5 of us, but I think he was just feeling outnumbered.
It was easy to clean/sweep at the end of our stay and worked well to make sure we didn’t leave anything behind.
We all drove separately and there was parking for each of our cars. Couldn’t ask for anything else.
The owners were kind and helpful and addressed any of our concerns immediately!
This house was very well stocked for our arrival! Carol Lynn & Joe were very welcoming! We would definitely recommend to anyone interested!
