Great home by Lake Michigan and Portage Lake
Located on a secluded, wooded peninsula on Portage Lake and Lake Michigan. Navigable channel connects the two lakes. Three hundred yard walk to the west onto 10 miles of uninterrupted, mostly uninhabited, beautiful sand beaches on Lake Michigan. Play offshore in the crystal clear waters with gradually sloping sand bottom. Watch the sunset and build a campfire to roast hot dogs and marshmallows. Access to Portage Lake beaches is about the same 300 yard walk to the east.
Cottage has a large outdoor deck outside sliding glass patio door from kitchen/dining/living room area. Master bedroom with a king bed and private bath. There is a screened in porch off master bedroom looking over the forested dunes. There is a couple of extra mattress that can be used in master bedroom or screened in porch. The second bedroom has a full bed and private bath. Laundry room with washer and dryer also has a half bath. Upstairs is like a dorm room with 3 sleeping berths that have queen beds, reading lights, and curtains to draw for privacy. The dorm and also has a bunkbed and a single cot. This gives the dorm the ability to sleep up to 9 people. This cottage is great for bringing 1 or 2 dogs. There are two outdoor dog runs giving your pets plenty of space to hang out when unattended.
This location lends itself to all sorts of outdoor activities. Biking, walking, and jogging. Boating, water skiing, fishing, jet skiing, and sailing. Canoeing and tubing local rivers. Fishing Portage Lake for all the fresh water game fish. Charter fishing available for Salmon and Trout on the big lake and world class local Trout and Salmon streams. Relaxing on the beautiful beaches. Traveling up the coastline on M22, one of the most scenic drives in America, to the quaint villages along the route offering unique shopping opportunities. Visit the many vineyards and wine chateaus.
This is also a great time to visit and photograph several lighthouses. Championship golf courses are within a few minutes of your condominium, most notable are Arcadia Bluffs, The Heathlands, Manistee National, Bear Lake County Highlands, and Manistee Golf and Country Club. The village of Onekama, on the opposite side of Portage Lake from this condominium, has some wonderful shops and restaurants. The beautiful Little River Casino is ten miles away and provides gambling and entertainment.
The house was spacious and well-laid out. The upstairs was the best for kids - they loved the built in bed nooks. Everything was provided that we needed. Ceiling fans were used for great circulation, and the upstairs had a window unit A/C which was helpful on a few hot nights. Otherwise the ceiling fans were sufficient. The beach (Lake Michigan) was awesome. Never many people there, the sand was gorgeous. No rocks or seaweed, very shallow gently sloping, pet-friendly., and perfect temperature for swimming and/or wading. We wanted to rent a speedboat for the day or week but nothing was available. Need to plan ahead for that! Bring bikes - nice bike trails in the area. We did part of the Betsy Valley Trail and it is highly recommended. We drove to a trail head, biked to Beulah, had ice cream and shopped around, and then road back. About 7+ miles each away. The weather was great (2nd week of August). Only one cloudy/rainy day, so we went into Manistee to see a movie. The location is great for a quiet and relaxing week - good time to read a book, etc! Not action packed, but vacations don't always have to be!
Absolutely wonderful! Worked out perfectly for all of us, ages 2 to 72 and for dogs Poppi and Enid. Chuck was terrific to deal with. His description of the place over the phone was completely accurate. Everything was clean and well ordered. We used the dog run on several occasions for drying out the dogs I should say.
I give my highest recommendation which is reserving a week for next year if there are any left. Thanks for sharing your beautiful serene up north retreat.
Our stay was wonderful it very peaceful Husband, Children, Grandchildren and dogs we felt very relaxed and comfortable. Beds and linens very nice. Boat landing was right around the corner made it easy for us. Great place to stay and would go back again.
