Overview

About the property

Best location, 4 bedroom, new kitchen, spacious South Battery home and garden

Licensed B&B - We offer coffee and wine upon check-in but no meals are included in the stay. We also do not allow/tolerate events/venues as this is a wonderful and unique opportunity to enjoy being able to see Charleston more as a resident than a tourist and we expect proper respect to be given as such.

This is an authentic Charleston 'single-house' (c 1795) which means a Charleston house that is a single room in depth, designed to catch the ocean breezes. The builders of this property were in the shipping business and a wharf was built into the river to accommodate the owner's ships. Property taxes at that time were based on a front footage assessment and the typical single house was placed so that the narrow side of the house would be on the street side. This property was an exception in that the long side of the house faces South Battery which made it even more accessible to the prevailing summer southwest breezes. The two piazzas on the south side provide a dual purpose: to provide a comfortable place to enjoy the afternoon breeze and sunsets and to provide shade for the house itself from the afternoon sun.

On the main floor is an elegant dining room with beautiful hand made mahogany table, sideboard, and hunt-board. Just across the central hall is a less formal living room. It is furnished with comfortable upholstered sofa and chairs and accented with fine antiques including a mahogany chest, fold top desk, French farm table with 6 chairs and a magnificent highboy. The new kitchen with marble counters, lovely light filled windows on three sides, all new appliances and conveniences is accessed through two nine foot entrances from the living room. All of these rooms open onto the main floor piazza and offer wonderful opportunities for family fun and entertaining. A gracious central stairway leads from the piazza to the large and lovely Charleston garden.

The next floor houses the main bedrooms, baths and closets. The two large bedrooms with four poster mahogany King Bed in Master and Queen in Guest Room and adjoining bathrooms open onto the upper piazza overlooking the garden and Charleston Harbor.

The upper floor consists of two large dormer bedrooms with wonderful windows on the north and south sides. Between these rooms is a bath with a shower. All have windows providing a spectacular panoramic roof top view of the landscape below.

The garden is spacious and charming. The areas adjoining the house are terraced in old Charleston bricks and provide fabulous area for containers of flowering plants. The planting in the main garden is a balanced mixture of evergreens which provide shape, texture, and definition on a year round basis, and flowering shrubs and plants which provide a bouquet of color and scent as the seasons evolve. In the center of the front garden is a shallow reflecting pool with an Italian fountain. The fountain is automatically lighted at night and bathes the whole area with the ambiance of warm light and gurgling sounds. It is completely private from the street and fully enclosed and offers wonderful opportunities for entertaining or for children playing.

Very near prominent streets such as Church, Meeting, King and Legare Streets all are within very short walking distances to the property. White Point Gardens and the Harbor are within walking distance of the house. The house is in easy walking distance to the historic house museums, antique shops, art galleries, boutiques and famous restaurants.

About Jamie Molony

We are a retired couple who raised our 3 children in this house. In 2001 we sailed our boat to Europe. We now spend part of the year on our boat in Europe and other part of the year in Charleston. We have so much space in our home that we enjoy offering some of the space for rent as a B&B (no breakfast).

Jamie Molony purchased this house in 1978

Why Jamie Molony chose Charleston

We bought this property because it was in walking distance of anything on the peninsula and is a lovely, historic, large, gracious home with a beautiful garden. It is an exciting and happy place to be.

What makes this house unique

Fabulous location, authentic Charleston 'single house', spacious and comfortable, lovely garden and piazzas.

Close to the battery, house museums, Spoleto Festival events, antique shops, fabulous restaurants. Beaches and water activities are nearby. Licensed Bed and Breakfast.

A home to remember and cherish in memory

  • 5 of 5

Scarce are the words to convey how exceptional this home is! The elegant (yet welcoming) furnishings, the charming artwork gracing the walls, the most comfortable master bed we have slept on in years (aided by particularly lovely linens), an abundance of fluffy towels and bath accoutrements, a kitchen fully equipped with pots, pans, stunning glasses and dishes for 12, are just part of the allure of this home. And the outside.... the two verandas, up and down, furnished with comfy wicker furniture overlooking the exquisite garden and slight river view ... well, it just does not get any better. We stayed this past weekend with our three grown children, two with significant others in tow. Everyone was thoroughly pleased with their respective accommodations and all want desperately to return. I was a bit hesitant when I learned that the owners might be in residence downstairs, but that fear was unfounded. When we did meet them, they were kind, warm and most helpful - a true asset, not a problem. We do hope to return.

Beautiful, Historic Charleston Home

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this historic home, celebrating a 40th birthday with friends and family. The gorgeous original details and excellent location in the old city, made for a truly authentic visit.

The double porches are a highlight, overlooking a beautiful, private courtyard area, and a sliver of a view of the bay. We were in walking distance to everything, and took full advantage and walked everywhere.

The house was well stocked, and the owners were super friendly and very helpful, providing some verbal history of the home. Our only complaint was that the bathroom on the top floor had difficulty flushing.

Thank you for an amazing stay!

Stunning home "south of Broad"

  • 5 of 5

My family and I stayed in this gorgeous home for my wedding weekend and I can honestly say that booking this retreat was a blessing in and of itself. The homeowners (who live in a separate apartment on the ground floor) were gracious, humble, and sincerely thoughtful throughout our stay and ensured that all of our needs were met. Jamie, the house manager, was equally kind and even brought a cot onto the property when she discovered that my mother was unable to climb the stairs due to a broken ankle. We were consistently floored by the gentile and helpful nature of everyone associated with the property.

As far as logistics, the location can't be beat. The beds are exceedingly comfortable, the furnishings charming & conducive to forgetting you're in a rental instead of your own well-appointed home, and the grounds swoon-worthy. If that sounds a bit excessive, oh well--I literally can't fathom a more perfect location in which to spend my last few days as a "miss." Thank you to Bill & Jacqueline for cultivating an environment for our family to fully enjoy our favorite weekend to date.

Charleston was voted for the second consecutive year 'Top City in the United States' in the 2012 Conde Nast Traveler Readers' Choice Awards. While we would like to keep the secret of Charleston a little more to ourselves, we can't help but be proud of our ambiance (rooftop bars, narrow, tree-lined courtyards, fabulous harbor tidal creeks), our culture and sites (notable historic neighborhoods, antique shops, fall and spring house and garden tours), our renowned friendliness ('legendary hospitality and graciousness baked into our way of life'), our lodging opportunities described as 'a dream come true for travelers'. our restaurants which 'shine bright on the national food scene' and shopping that lets you 'spoil yourself or someone else with unique treasures only found in Charleston. Antique shops, local boutiques, name brand outlets, art galleries and jewelers awaiting your arrival'
