This cute and clean '1940s' era cottage is much the way you would have found it mid-century: no TV, no phone, lots of clean air and water, nesting loons, and the good company you've traveled with. The cottage has one bedroom with a double bed, and another with two singles. This Thayer Lake beachfront cottage shares 150 feet of prime frontage with its sister cottage, 'Oak' (VRBO listing 57002). The cottage sits 400 feet back off the road. Thayer Lake is a no-wake lake perfect for swimming, canoeing, kayaking, fishing and relaxed enjoyment of nature. There are both sunny and shady areas along the waterfront and a lakeside fire pit for making S'mores. The lake access is shallow and gradual, good for children and wading. Within one mile of the cottage are two public accesses to Torch Lake, one of Michigan's largest and certainly most beautiful sandy-bottomed lakes.
This is our favorite place for getting away from it all. The owners do a great job maintaining the cottages and providing everything you need for a great vacation. No TV, Internet, or phone, but that's one of the perks - not a drawback. Quiet, lovely, and clean. So peaceful! We would spend every day of summer here if we could.
If you like luxury accommodations, this is not for you, but if you want to spend some time in a quaint 40s-style summer resort, this is your place. Tune out the noise of the world and teach your kids some card games, make s'mores, and wake up early to fish or kayak on the lake that's right outside your door. Later, if you need some excitement you can rent a jetski on Torch, eat at the Dockside, visit a coffee shop in Bellaire (with wifi), pick cherries in Central Lake, or drive down to Traverse.
I almost don't want to leave a review because I want to keep it to myself, but that wouldn't be fair to the owners and managers, who do such a great job giving you everything you need and nothing you don't for a great fall or summer getaway.
My fiance and I were looking for a last minute getaway to do some fishing and get some r&r. Helped to be off season, but it being a now wake lake made it exceptionally quiet. The fishing was awesome - even I caught quite a few. We had a few 70-80 degree weather which was great for a dip in the lake then all the way down to 40 degrees calling for a fire in the fireplace. Also - I rate most my vacations on the terrain, scenery and amount of traffic it provides my runs... absolutely breathtaking to come over the hill on Paige to the view of Torch... Loved it!
These cottages were amazing! Just what we were looking for! Close to Torch Lake, Thayer Lake was great for fishing and kayaking. Owners keep them very clean and they are available if needed, but they don't bother you at all. Our family would love to make these cottages a yearly vacation.
Up north near-by activities include nature trails, Torch Lake access less than one mile, fun shopping in town of Alden, Short's Brewery and Shanty Creek Golf in Bellaire. Thayer Lake is a 25-minute drive to Turtle Creek Casino. Traverse City, Charlevoix, Petoskey, and Elk Rapids are within 1 hour drive.
