This two-story, 1600 sq. ft, two-bedroom, two-bath home is set within a private, fully fenced dog-friendly acre of lush ferns and towering California redwoods.
You will feel you are a world away but it’s just minutes to The Village or Mendocino Headlands State Park and its 350 acres of rocky bluffs and open space overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
This lovely home is an easy walk or short drive to some of America’s most beautiful countryside, miles of stunning beaches, hiking trails, world-class wineries and more.
To discover Redwood Majic, take the lovely drive west on Highway 128, then north along Highway 1 into the delightful Village of Mendocino. You will pass cypress trees and redwood groves, drive through the gates and up a long driveway lined with magnificent and ancient California redwoods, soaring over 200 feet into the sky!
The fast pace of the world will disappear when you enter this gracious home.
And while Mendocino Village is recognized for its excellent restaurants, our home’s large country kitchen has everything you’ll need for cooking wonderful meals. The Kitchen features an apron sink, open shelving and plenty of counter space and storage. A 6-foot-long butcher block island has seating for two and the dining table seats six. Just outside the kitchen is a high end Weber 3-burner (plus sideburner) BBQ set on an expansive wrap-around Deck with plenty of built-in seating and garden chairs. It’s perfect for enjoying a glass of wine while contemplating the stars and the stunningly beautiful redwood forest that rings the property.
The Kitchen and Dining Area flow into the Living Room graced with large windows and vaulted wooden ceilings. There is seating for seven and a new 42-inch Smart TV with access to hundreds of stations as well as Pandora radio for music. Bookshelves offer reading material, something for everyone, so slow down and relax.
Upstairs, the large windows in the light-filled 600-square-foot Master Suite provide views on three sides over the gardens and to the treetops. The Suite has plenty of closet and storage space as well as a large reading area with a romantic window seat featuring garden and forest views. A California King bed with a firm mattress is laid with fine linens and topped with a down comforter and the Bathroom features a skylight, plenty of plush towels, a large pedestal sink and a shower big enough for two.
The Downstairs Bedroom has wood paneled ceilings and views of the garden plus a fascinating redwood stump that was cut during the 1800s. It is easily 7 feet tall and covered with moss. A huckleberry bush is now growing from the top!
The Downstairs Bedroom features ample closet and drawer space, a California King bed with firm mattress, fine linens and a down comforter. Its bath, with pedestal sink and large shower, is stocked with plenty of fluffy towels.
The gardens—potted plants around the house plus an expansive open space fringed with ferns and towering California redwood trees—is acreage worth exploring. The property is rich with hydrangea, rhododendron, purple Princess flowers and lilac. See if you can find a fairy ring beneath the redwood trees! Local wildlife includes osprey, chipmunks, squirrels, possum, raccoon, deer and more.
Along the coast, we have otters, whales and seals and we are famous for our schools of sardines and salmon runs. Harvest Market offers a wonderful selection of organic foods and fresh fish but you can also buy direct from the fishermen as they unload their catch in the harbor, a real treat.
Come and visit our very special home—Redwood Majic in Mendocino—soon!
I am a horsewoman by profession and lived in Southern California where I was involved in riding and polo—such joy! I bought Redwood Majic in 2006 and retired to Mendocino Village in 2015. I love the clear air and the slower pace of living here. And since I still travel a great deal, I love to share my home with others who appreciate all that our lovely little Mendocino Village and the surrounding area have to offer, that very special Mendocino magic and the magical redwoods.
Susie Edlund purchased this house in 2006
I wanted to be in the redwoods because they are so very special but I also wanted to be within walking distance of the Village, beach and Headlands. Privacy and quiet were very important and so, after a long search, I chose Redwood Majic. Ringed by towering redwoods, Redwood Majic is a secluded and quiet enclave hidden from the world, offering that special Mendocino magic of clean air with a touch of salt from the Pacific Ocean, the magical redwoods and a slower pace of life. Our Redwood Majic is close enough to the ocean that you can hear the ocean crashing on the rocks during rough weather and the seals barking. And when the fog rolls in from the coast, blankets the Village and creeps across Highway 1, we at Redwood Majic are just far enough east to still enjoy California sunshine! Amazing!
Sunny days when it is foggy on the coast plus a beautiful redwood forest—serene and majestic.
Plus it is just minutes to Mendocino Village and the ocean, the spectacular Big River Trail and other terrific walks.
And because dogs are special, we cater to them with a fully fenced, gated acre where they are protected and can run to their heart’s content. You might not notice it because of the trees and the lushness of the property, but the fence is wire and will keep in the miniature dogs too. So, do bring your pets!

We really enjoyed our getaway to this lovely home, situated in a redwood grove very close to town. The description was accurate and the home is bright and very well cared for. We love to cook and the kitchen was well stocked with high quality pots & pans, a nice grill and even some of the basic staples like spices, olive oil etc. We did have an issue with the stove/oven while we were there but Susie called us immediately and said she would have someone take care of it. The place is also PERFECT for dogs given the very large yard-- big enough for running, ball & frisbee-- and fully fenced, but also doesn't look or feel "doggie" because she keeps everything spotless. She even provided dog dishes and a big basket of "dog towels" for us.
I would say that the place is perfect for 4 people who know each other well and don't need a lot of privacy. The master suite upstairs is huge and spacious, but it's built as a "loft" so that the area over the living room is a half wall. So people in the living room can hear everything in the master bedroom and vice versa. Also, the downstairs bedroom is quite small and while the 3/4 bath (toilet, sink, shower stall), are right across from the bedroom door, it also serves as the only downstairs bath so others will likely be using it. None of this was a problem for us as we had good friends with us but I just thought I'd point that out.
Overall the place was a hit in our book and we'd definitely go back. Too bad it doesn't have a 3rd bedroom because we had another couple that would have loved to join us!
Place is as advertised. Stunningly clean and welcoming home. While you feel far away, you are only less than a mile to the village. Cooked dinner here on two occasions using the weber grill. Enjoyed a great dinner at Cafe Beaujolais! Dog friendly home, brought our two dachshunds who loved exploring the large fenced acre of land. Couldn't have asked for a better stay at this comfortable home, so close yet so far from Mendocino. Highly recommended and very responsive owner.
We had a fantastic time at this great home in the redwoods, just minutes outside of the town of Mendocino. We were lucky enough to travel and stay here with our canines and children who all had a ball. Many thanks to our hosts for hosting us! We will keep this wonderful home in mind for future visits!
Last year we stayed and reviewed "Redwood Majic". This year in May we spent another week. It is still the BEST retreat! The interior design and furnishings are lovely, as well as supplying all the necessities and basically anything we could have desired making our stay a delight. The 1 acre private forested yard (securely fenced) with planted and potted flowers scattered about, a big wraparound deck (nice bbq also) was perfect for relaxing, reading, and late afternoon drinks. Our dog, Sadie, couldn't believe the freedom she had exploring and playing on "her" property. We had very pleasant weather: no rain, mix of clouds and sun, cool daytime temps (mid 60's-low 70's) some breeze - just what we like for exploring and hiking.
We walked the Mendocino Headlands trail twice making it a full loop by continuing up the hill to Lansing Rd., then down to town. The views are great. Returned also to the Big River trail which continues along an old road through forest while following the Big River. Very scenic and peaceful. Because the trail extends 8 miles inland, it's a good multi-use option of hikers, joggers, cyclists, and dogs. Retracing our steps from last year, we returned to the Botanical Gardens in Fort Bragg. The gardens are not your typical nursery variety; they do contain interior manicured trees, plants, flowers (beautiful); but you can extend through their back gates and continue your stroll to the ocean. There are so many trails within, we managed to put 2 miles into this garden tour. Best part: super dog friendly (on leash). We continued to McKerricher State Park, a few miles north, to walk part of the 10-mile old haul road which follows the ocean. This time of year the seals and their new pups are visible from a very short distance. We discovered a new hike (our favorite for now), Jug Handle State Park. Great 5 mile (total) hike beginning with a coastal portion, then a variety of forest, ending at a boardwalked pygmy forest. Two Anderson Valley wine tasting trips bookended our week. Favorites: Bink, Drew, Phillips Hill, Baxter, and Artevino. Goldeneye was fun for appetizers with a nice view of the vineyards. The home being so comfortable, we dined in mostly (Harvest market fare). We did savor craft beers/calamari at Patterson's (fun Irish pub), yummy pastries from Goodlife Cafe, and strong cocktails one early evening at Little River Inn with ocean views.
Another perfect getaway thanks to Susie (owner) sharing her piece of paradise.
Second time staying at this lovely home nestled in the redwoods about one mile from Mendocino Village and it was another great stay. Peaceful and relaxing setting with a fully fenced yard for the dog. Home is well equipped for your stay and is very clean. If you are looking for some peace and quiet, while still being very close to HWY 1 and Mendocino Village, this would be a good place for you.
We (three adults, one dog) all loved our stay in the redwoods. Having just come off a bad rental experience through vaycayhero, we were only cautiously optimistic about our choice this time. But, it was exactly what we wanted. Beautifully maintained home on lovely grounds. Although we didn't cook much, the kitchen was perfectly outfitted. The beds were very comfortable. The wifi was fast. Oh, and there's an awesome bench in the loft where you can sit and work and look out over the redwoods. Our dog was in heaven patrolling his new territory and there was even a bag of doggie treats tucked in the cupboard for him. And, of course, the proximity to the Big River and Mendocino is great. I would definitely come back here.
Redwood Majic is located less than a mile from the Village of Mendocino and the beautiful Mendocino Headlands. The Village has wonderful Restaurants, Museums, Art Galleries, Salons, Day Spas, Shops and Grocerie Stores.
The beautiful Big River Beach and Big River Trail are also just 1 mile away. You can go to Catch a Canoe to rent a bike, canoe, kayak or outrigger.
