About Gary Hughey

I have lived in the area for 20 years and have always dreamed of owning a place on the water. I am lucky enough to have found the perfect spot and to own a piece of paradise. I love sharing this property with others and see the joy they get from being there. I'm an engineer by day and love going out to the cottage as often as possible. Like you, I need a vacation and I am lucky enough to get to retreat to a perfect location.

Gary Hughey purchased this cottage in 2012

Why Gary Hughey chose Northern Michigan

This is very close to Traverse City where I both work and live. Leelanau County is one of the most beautiful places in the country and on top of that this cabin nearly boarders Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. I have many excellent memories as a young person visiting the Dunes for the challenging dune climb with my friends. They always wanted to see how fast they could climb to the top! Try it, it will be day to remember!

What makes this cottage unique

When this was built, they put it very close to the water. 12 feet past the end of the deck is the water's edge, making the cabin feel like an extension of the lake. There is a fire pit in between the cabin and the water for evenings sitting around a fire by the water. This cabin creates unique opportunity to enjoy the closeness of the water and all the amenities necessary to be comfortable.

The perfect vacation

  • 5 of 5

This is slightly overdue but better late than never ; - ) Our family of four stayed at this cottage during Fourth of July week this year. We decided to book our stay solely based on the other high ratings and solid written reviews about the positive experiences other families had during their stay. Everything that we read proved to be 100% correct. Our kids age 8 and six enjoyed swimming and playing every day in the lake and we enjoyed grilling and eating dinners on the deck most nights, sitting by the fire pit, and going out on the provided rowboat nearly every day during our seven nights. In the weeks leading up to our stay we messaged the owners, Gary and Stacey, several times asking about the cottage and things to do in the area and I kid you not they responded in under an hour ( sometimes within 15 minutes !) and provided a .pdf document with Internet links included about all of the local attractions. Their list included Internet links to the various neighboring tourist towns to visit and beaches and hikes, dune climbs etc, and other things to do and we did most of the things they suggested. Our average day was spending a few hours each day doing one of their suggested excursions and then spending most of the rest of the day relaxing at the cottage and watching our kids enjoy the pristine lake and also enjoying the company of the guests at the neighboring cottages. On our visit to Traverse City, Gary and Stacey were kind enough to allow us to park our vehicle at one of their assigned parking spaces at their residence so that we could take a short leisurely walk to town and enjoy the day hassle free. Gary was so personable and friendly and would occasionally check in with me via text message to see how our vacation was going and was genuinely concerned with us having a great time - and I hope he doesn't mind me sharing all of this but I felt that his involvement and personal touch in our experience was part of what made our vacation experience so wonderful. Many thanks to two very grateful and hospitable property owners in Gary and Stacey! The property and the area far exceeded any expectations that we had and if we decide to visit the area again ( which we most likely will) we will highly consider staying at their hideaway cottage again since that will remove any uncertainty about the quality of the vacation we will have and the return on investment. A warm and very heartfelt thanks to the owners!!!

We had a very nice time at the cottage. Our kids loved playing in the lake. We loved exploring the dunes and Traverse City. The market across the street was very convenient. We enjoyed our stay here very much!

Very nice little location to hideaway for the week! Good base of operation for activities!

  • 5 of 5

We rented this little cottage to get away and give our college age daughter a week way before school started. It is a great little cottage. Very clean and nicely furnished pine cabin. Even thought the stove was small, I was able to cook several meals and breakfast just fine. We are a bit unusual - as we like to cook and back on vacation. The dock was very nice to sit on and the row boat got too. The fire pit was used several nights by us. The furnished fire wood was a plus.

We used the cabin as a base of operations for surfing at Glen Arbor and Otter Creek Beach on Esch Road, paddle boarding on the Crystal River and fishing at several locations, a impromptu wine tour, a visit to Leland, Northport and all the fun Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lake Shore Activities.

We wanted to stay for a month!
