About Gary Hughey

I have lived in the area for 20 years and have always dreamed of owning a place on the water. I am lucky enough to have found the perfect spot and to own a piece of paradise. I love sharing this property with others and see the joy they get from being there. I'm an engineer by day and love going out to the cottage as often as possible. Like you, I need a vacation and I am lucky enough to get to retreat to a perfect location.

Gary Hughey purchased this cottage in 2012

Why Gary Hughey chose Northern Michigan

This is very close to Traverse City where I both work and live. Leelanau County is one of the most beautiful places in the country and on top of that this cabin nearly boarders Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. I have many excellent memories as a young person visiting the Dunes for the challenging dune climb with my friends. They always wanted to see how fast they could climb to the top! Try it, it will be day to remember!

What makes this cottage unique

When this was built, they put it very close to the water. 12 feet past the end of the deck is the water's edge, making the cabin feel like an extension of the lake. There is a fire pit in between the cabin and the water for evenings sitting around a fire by the water. This cabin creates unique opportunity to enjoy the closeness of the water and all the amenities necessary to be comfortable.

The cabin on the lake, what more do you need. Water is nice, warm, and clean. The view, incredible, especially when you sitting by the fire ring watching a sunset. My kids had fun swimming, taking a boat on the lake. They had plenty of bord games for the colder days. We enjoyed our stay at the cabin very much.

Great cottage needs a little TLC

  • 4 of 5

Having been in this area before, we were glad that this cottage was open for rent again. It is a nice cottage on a beautiful lake. There were some details that just need some attention for future renters. The picnic table is weak and tipped over with an adult on it. The grill is unusable and doesn't even have a grate in it. The fridge doesn't keep food very cold. The micro doesn't have a glass turntable in it making it difficult to use. There isn't enough seating in the main room since there is not a table/ chairs and the "recliner" is broken so that was one less seat. The step going in and out of the cabin is too high. The TV needs to be replaced with a newer one. We know that in the past w/ other cottages we have left some paper products to help the next renters, but this one had some food leftover, which most people wouldn't feel safe using. The binder of information was a great idea.

Owner's Response: We appreciate all input and would like to address anything that does not meet expectations. I'll address the review issues with the cottage. There are grates in the grill so I am not sure what the customer was referring. We used it just prior to their arrive and I checked it after they left. It does not have thin grates - it has thicker more professional ones, perhaps that was the difference they were not used to. The microwave rotary plate was broken during cleaning and we are actively seeking a replacement. The fridge simply needs to be turned up if anyone would like things colder to meet individual tastes. What is left in the fridge is condiments - ketchup, mustard, relish etc. I will review our policy - many people seem to like that in the past, but I can see how some customers might not want it. I like having an older TV (not flat screen) to purposefully have a more vintage feel. (I want the TV to be the last thing anyone does there :) There are plenty of folding chairs in the bedroom closet if more are needed. I will verify that is in our welcome binder. It is true the recliner portion of the chair is difficult to close, but the chair is very comfortable to sit in so that is not one less seat and why we keep it. The front door step feels very normal - in fact, the entry door is brand new this year with a half window for viewing of the lake from the kitchen. The picnic table can't tip over, it is 5 sided. The bolts holding it together can loosen and make the seat shift when sitting down. I will review getting a new table for the following year. As always we strive to have an extremely clean and comfortable place for people to stay. I purposefully do not keep it fancy, just very comfortable and try to reproduce the type of place you might have visited when you were a kid growing up. The focus is on the lake, environment, family, and surrounding area. I love that my cottage has a general feeling of coziness and a relaxed atmosphere that helps make vacations special. Thank you for your input and I value all comments. We hope to see you soon!

cabin on the lake

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed the cabin, it was cozy and comfortable and clean. We loved that the grandkids were able to swim in the lake and we could sit on the porch and watch them. We recommend Hughey cabin for a family vacation.

We had an amazing time in northern Michigan. It was our first stay in this area, the cottage is perfectly located. We had fun exploring Leland, Glen Arbor, Glen Haven and Sleeping Bear Dunes. My husband and kids used the row boat out a couple of times and caught a few small mouth bass. There is so much to do in the area we didn't even begin to see all we could have. The cabin is nicely stocked, we had everything we needed. They had several games for us to play in the evenings and on the one rainy day we had. We are already planning our next stay!

Great lake cottage, fantastic location!

  • 5 of 5

This was such a great stay. First off, the owner was very helpful and easily reached. We were welcomed with a bottle of local wine, and he was more than happy to share some "local" insight into where we should go, what we should do, etc. This cottage is RIGHT on the water - so peaceful and beautiful. In terms of location, all the beautiful sights of northern MI are within a short drive. Such amazing scenery for those willing to explore a little. Great golf and wineries in the area as well.

Wifi was ready to go as well as cable TV, but I only watched some football. The convenience was nice to have. Found it more than big enough for two. We stocked up from the local grocery, and the kitchen had everything we needed to cook meals. The beds were comfy, the linens were clean...really there's nothing more you could ask for! Great place, highly recommended - rent with confidence!

Oasis of calm

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Little Traverse Lake at the end of summer season and enjoyed the silence of this area. The cottage was clean and we felt very homely. We had lots of fun together with our teenage children because we could choose from a big compendium of games provided by the owner. Further activities were boating, visiting Sleeping Bear Dunes and we made bonfire in the evening. Gary the owner was very supportive and pleasant. I would recommend this cottage to friends and if I would ever come back again to this area I would contact Gary again.
