While sleeping in the night burglars broke into the home by sliding open a closed window undetected. They stole $12000 worth of electronics and even had enough time to eat food by the pool and watch the sunrise. They snuck into every room and stole watches and jewelry from the night stands and walk in closets. Luckily we did not wake up to them. I cannot imagine the possible outcomes of that especially since we had two little kids with us who are now traumatized.
We had checked the windows and doors before we went to bed as they did not close very well. I myself was able to slide the windows open by sliding them back and forth a couple of times.
Though we were hit halfway through the vacation we were unable to change our plans and had to stay in the house till the end. We were scared that these guys could come back again and we were not safe.
On notifying the manager of the traumatic incident his delayed response was sorry but these things happen. In our 25 years of vacationing this has NEVER happened. The home owners only carry natural disaster insurance and were unwilling to even consider refunding our rent. We were terrorized by the incident not of our doing but due to lack of safety precautions in the house and bad decisions made by the home owners to not maintain the locks on windows and doors. NO security system and no cameras either.
If I could have I would give this property negative ratings and I would never recommend it to anyone.
Had a wonderful time with our eight year old daughter visiting Atenas and the surrounding areas. Mr Easters was so kind and informative. The house was very beautiful with comfortable beds and plenty of space to unpack. It was great having a washer and dryer to be able to go home with clean clothes and not have to worry about that upon return. The stove was great to cook breakfast most mornings before we headed out exploring with the local tour guides. No air conditioning was needed, because the house remained at a perfect temperature with the ceiling fans and screens at night. The pool was cool but refreshing. Overall, I would highly recommend this house and location!
This is a lovely home with an incredible view of the central valley and Poas Volcano. The panorama was dramatic both day and night. We stayed for 4 nights and were treated to Toucans flying over in the evening and Iguanas scooting up the driveway. The pool was cold but we found it refreshing after a day of exploring the town and El Toledo coffee farm a few miles away. This is a great spot for a family retreat, away from the bustle and noise of Atenas. Dennis and Gerardo were very helpful and responsive to our requests. Our three favorite things about Costa Rica, the fabulous air and water and the delicious fried chicken!
We stayed in the house the week of Christmas. We have two daughters, 7 and 8 years of age, and they loved the house. The morning view of the mountains is like nothing I have ever seen before. Dennis, the house manager, is incredibly helpful with finding fun actives in the area. The town of Atenas is small, but has everything a family could need. The only reason we did not give this house a 5 star rating is because of the pool. It was too cold for any of us to use, but that was in many of the reviews, so I wasn't too surprised. This house is in a great location as long as you don't mind driving through the area. We enjoy driving and after a day of excursions it was great to come home and relax with the family watching movies. It's about an hour and 15 minutes to Jaco and Puntarenas. The volcanoes were a further drive so we didn't actually visit those on this trip. San Jose is really close by, but we didn't care much for the city. We come from an urban area and just wanted to get away from the hassle of the city life. Having said that, San Jose is a good city, if you want the city vibe. I recommend this house if you are looking to get away from reality. The view is magical and the house has plenty of room and is very functional for a family.
My family just finished our stay here. Dennis & Gerardo were great hosts & responsive. This is a beautiful, gated house w/ breathtaking mountain views. The house has been through renovation since the pics were taken but they still do it justice. Do be aware that the pics are a mix of the main house and the guest house which is also on the property (which was empty during our stay).
The town of Atenas was quaint & friendly, with some basic grocery stores & decent cafes and bakeries. Definitely all of our basic needs could be met.
Like a lot of Costa Rica, we had some minor plumbing issues & electrical issues; nothing major.
About 70% of the windows have screens, so we left the windows open and the ceiling fans on, all but 1 of which worked just fine. That kept the house at a great temperature 100% of the time. It got windy at night, so don’t open the windows near table lamps too wide.
The oven didn’t work, but we never really had a need for it anyway. The stove & dishwasher all work great, & aside from inside light & ice maker, the refrigerator worked well. The kitchen came with basic pots, pans, utensils, as well as plates and cups. It also came with a coffee maker, & they were kind enough to provide a bag of coffee as well. The kitchen, like the rest of the house, was beautiful; granite, stainless, & beautiful cabinetry.
My only complaint was that the pool was way too cold. We selected this house, not close to the beach, in part because it had a pool. I'm guessing the temp of the pool was 65 degrees. Based on the position of the house, & the tree cover, the pool doesn't get a lot of sunlight. Thus it never really had a chance to warm up. A real shame, as a swim at the end of the day would have been nice, & the views are spectacular. I don't want to sell the house short, as it is beautiful in every other respect, But this was definitely a negative for us. If I owned the house I would definitely get a heater. That was the difference for me in whether to give this 5 stars or the 4 that I ended up with.
If the pool is less of an issue for you, then I would highly recommend this as a great jumping off point. It is close to the San Jose Airport, about an hour from some beaches like Jaco and fairly close to good zip lining & tours as well. Overall, we really did enjoy our stay there and Dennis & Gerardo were excellent. I just wish we had been able to use the pool.
We arrived mid afternoon in town. Dennis met us in the town square and took us up to the house (about a 5 min drive). The house was beautiful, clean, cool and nicely furnished. We opened the windows and doors and left them open all day! No A/C needed! We had a slight dripping problem during a downpour of rain, but Dennis and Gerardo showed up about 30 min later with a maid in tow. Dennis was so helpful with places to visit, eat and directions when the GPS failed us. The town has everything you need and some really great places to eat (Alida's, Antano's, Don Yayo's). The washer and dryer in house came in very handy as I hate to take dirty clothes back in a suitcase. The pool was too cold for me, but the kids braved the temp and swam everyday. We rescued a baby bird from the pool and, after being dried off and a brief rest, it flew off to join the chorus of other birds singing to us. We experienced an earthquake the first night there and, after realizing what it was, promptly went back to sleep. Never felt unsafe once! Friends stayed in the guest house and said it was as nice or nicer than any hotel they've stayed in. And more quiet! Thanks Dennis and Gerardo for your kindness and help. Look forward to seeing you both again soon!
This lovely home is located just 5 minutes from downtown Atenas in Atenas' first private community, Vista Atenas. Atenas is a small rural town that offers all the conveniences of being in the big city but in a warm and welcoming 'pueblo' setting. Some of the many conveniences included: a wide range of dining options, banking, several grocery stores, bakeries, pharmacies, churches and a charming central park. Most of the Central Valley's major tourist attractions are with-in one hours drive of Atenas including Poas Volcano National Park, La Paz Waterfall Gardens, ZooAve, the Central Pacific beach towns of Jaco, Esterillos, and Caldera Carara National Park, and the artisian town of Sarchi. In addition, there are several world class golf courses, fine dining and world class shopping in Escazu and sports fishing at the famed Los Suenos Resort, the bill fish capital of the world. For those seeking adventure there are canopy tours, horse back riding, hiking, whitewater rafting, ATV tours, birdwatching and paragliding.
