We are an active durango family who loves to be outdoors. We have lived in the area for over 17 years. We bike, hike, climb, ski, raft 4wheel, and camp. We can help guide visitors to many great experiences in the southwest.
We bought our home in silverton because we really enjoy skiing there all winter( taught all three of our kids to ski at Kendall mtn) and you can't beat the access to the mountains in the summer for hiking an amazing 4th of july fireworks display, motorcycling the jeep roads and fun community events like skijoring, hard rock mining and running competitions and parades , stagecoach rides and more!
In the summer you can ride a motorcycle or drive 4x4 and be in telluride in under an hour! My husband loves to ride over in the morning have breakfast or lunch and head home! There is also a great preschool in town with drop in options and babysitter referrals . There are not many places in the world where history and outdoor recreation are so closely tied together come to silverton, turn off the phone( although there is Dsl and great cell service at house) step outside and see for yourself why silverton is a special place
We stayed here for two glorious months this summer to escape from the Texas heat. What a wonderful vacation! We rode the train, hiked many beautiful hikes, 4-wheeled all over the mountains, mined for silver, gold and astorite, watched bears, moose and deer and enjoyed the small town atmosphere. The house was perfect for our needs ..well equipped kitchen and bedrooms, spacious, comfortable and certainly perfectly located. The neighbors were friendly and fun, as was everyone in this quaint little town of Silverton. We would choose this home again and would certainly recommend it to anyone looking for an extended stay in the cool mountain air.
We rented this home in Silverton for a few weeks and would recommend it to other travelers, with a few caveats. First, the good: the home was clean and comfortable with heated bathroom floors and great insulation so the whole house feels very cozy. It is comfortably and attractively furnished. The kitchen is well-stocked with pots and pans and cooking staples, although you'll be short of flatware if your group is greater than 2 or 3 people. Stove is electric, a drawback for some. The house is well-located, just a short walk to downtown and near a pretty park. It has beautiful views and is within an easy distance to a lot of outdoor activities such as mountain jeeping, hiking, horseback riding, etc. The owners were kind to allow us to bring our dog.
A few issues could be improved, however. Internet access supposedly is supplied by a Verizon JetPack mobile hotspot but it was very spotty; if it is important to you to watch your favorite shows online or to do a little work during your stay, then this is not the house for you. Second, there is no shower, just a claw foot bathtub with a hand-held shower. Finally, the lighting in the house is poor for reading. There are no lamps anywhere in the house; some rooms (like the master bedroom) have no ceiling fixtures, just bare compact fluorescent bulbs . Unfortunately, the house does not have a pleasant porch or garden for sitting outside. These may be significant issues for some but would be easy to improve if the owners are willing. For the most part, they are attentive to their guests' comfort. All in all, a great stay in a cozy house.
A great place to visit and stay. It's like going back in time, The town of Silverton is very quaint and welcoming to tourists.
You can get there by driving from Durango (about an hour drive) or if you want a real treat, take the Narrow Gauge Railroad trip from Durango to Silverton or vice versa. It's one of the last narrow gauge railroads trains in service. It is seasonal, so check ahead...but well worth the trip!
Once you are there, you can walk to just about everything you want.
We visited last Christmas/New Years and it snowed as if on Cue,
Beautiful, breathtaking scenery, mountains all around.
Hiking and biking are encouraged to add to the outdoor experience.
In the winter there is a great Ski run at Kendall Mtn. within walking distance from the house if you wanted. It really was a great place for first time skiers to test their abilities. Our grandchildren ages 18,14 and 8 all had a great time learning to ski and snowboard there.
The town has an equiptment rental (very reasonable) just blocks from the house.
Restaurants in town were run by locals and food was reasonable in cost. Depending on the time of year you visit the restaurants may or maynot limit their hours....it is a resort town most of the year. There is a small grocery in town but for better selection you should probably shop in the bigger towns like Durango before you come.
The house has all the comforts of home and is decorated charmingly as you would expect an old fashioned Victorian home to be.
The owners were very accomodating and can answer any questions you may have.
We had 8 adults and 4 children in our group and although there are only 3 bedrooms and 1 1/2 baths, we all felt comfortable in our sleeping arrangements.
Great memories were made here and we will definitely be back!
