About Rene and Drue
We have lived in this wonderful community of Nevada City for over 20 years now, and find that our guests love the area as much as we do. Papa Bear's Lodge was our family home until our son went away to college. We now live in town, right next to Rene's studio, just a short distance from the lodge and cabins. We personally attend to the upkeep and management of the property. Our cabins reflect our love for the arts, and you'll find Rene's handmade pottery there too. If you hit it just right, you may be able to catch one of us in a local play.
Rene and Drue purchased this Cabin in 2000
Why Rene and Drue chose Nevada City
We stumbled upon the jewel of Nevada city in 1989 and, impressed with the local theater scene and the wholesome, friendly atmosphere, decided this was the place to live and raise our young son. Now, having raised along with him, goats, horses and veggie gardens, we decided to move several years ago from Papa Bear's Lodge to our home in town, which is conveniently located next to Rene's pottery studio. We love the friendly people, history, culture and ambiance of Nevada City, as well as the beauty of the surrounding foothills. We consider it a gift to be able to share our lodge and cabins with visitors to this area.
What makes this Cabin unique
Though you feel like you are out in the woods, you are only 2.5 miles from the energy of downtown, with it's many shops, live theater, fine dining, city park and pool, and night life. Go the other direction, and you are just 3.5 miles from our magical Yuba River with its huge boulders and big swimming holes as well as fine hiking paths. If you want to just stay cozy in one of the log cabins, you will not be disappointed. The feeling there is so serene, even we feel like we are on vacation when we are there. In the summer time, the children's camps are in session all around Lake Vera. We are located next to Camp Augusta.

Great space well equipped
Very nice - thanks for sharing your beautiful place
Best "little" get away!!
We stayed in Papa Bears cabin over the Christmas holiday due to a military move and I have to say it ended up being one of the best Christmas experiences we have ever had! And the cabin was HUGE for our small family, we were thinking it could fit my husbands entire side of his family in it with no problem! At least 4 families and then some. The cabin has an open concept to it with different areas for sitting which we found perfect based on the mood. The TV couches are super comfy! The kitchen contained everything we needed for our stay and then some. The uniqueness of the area when we went for our "walks", and all the many details around the house made this feel a lot more of a home. The hot tub was the PERFECT bonus! Overall, we had an amazing experience and will totally be checking this place out again in the future for our family trips. Thank you.
We are so glad your family has such a lovely stay in our Papa Bear’s Lodge. It was our family home for a number of years and we always felt there was something special about the home and the land. We are happy you did too! We look forward to hosting you all again. Thank you.
Super Cozy, great place for friends and family.
The cabin is outfitted with all sorts of quirky essentials that makes it a unique experience away from the hustle and bustle of the city. It is located to some great little hiking trails and the good ole Yuba River is 4 miles down the road! Wonderful layout, and plenty of space!
Fantastic log cabin for a magical Christmas
Lots of room for kids and grandkids. Beautiful, peaceful, quiet location, only a few minutes from down town Nevada City. Will return again. Friendly and helpful owners. Thank you Rene and Drue!
Great Family Vacation - even keeps the kids of their phones!
First and foremost we had a GREAT time. The owners were super nice and helpful when we couldn't get the tv to work (in our family you have to have football on Thanksgiving.) There were really only 2 negatives - 1 there is no cell service at this location - but there is wifi - so does that even really count as a negative? The second negative is that there were a few cockroaches found (and killed) during our stay - but we are in the woods - bugs are going to happen.
Now that the negatives are out of the way let me leave you with the positives of this place - first of all it is massive - open floor plan PLENTY of beds and rooms to go around and a GREAT kitchen stocked with almost everything we needed! Great back yard where we played catch in preparation for softball tryouts and let the dos run back and fourth. Close to town so if you happen to forget a toothbrush or in our case vanilla it is easy to get the essentials needed. We had quality family time here - cooking - eating - laughing - playing games - cuddled with fur children - and had some get adventures and memories to last a lifetime. We could not be happier with how easy this was and left the Papa Bear Cabin feeling very blessed. We would recommend this to anyone.
PS - this location has 3 cabins - Papa Bear (attached to the garage of Papa bear) and Mama bear cabin up the hill of the driveway... so it would be PERFECT for a large family were older parents want to go to bed early (Baby bear) and a younger family (Mama Bear) needed a quiet place to put children down for naps while the majority of the family gathering is in Papa Bear.
Fabulous three bears property!
We rented all three cabins on this property for our family to stay over a long weekend when my son got married nearby. The houses are comfortable, well stocked, plenty of dishes, games, furniture, etc., for a large group.
We all found the web site/app a little difficult to navigate. I would recommend putting all of the check out instructions in one spot under check out. The check out instructions seem to be scattered throughout the information & I hope we didn't forget anything!
If you like history, there is plenty here. Originally built in the 1850's, Nevada City and it's neighboring town, Grass Valley, are historically preserved, with the streets looking very much as they did back in the days of the gold rush era. You will find beautiful old victorian homes, gold mining museums, fine restaurants and live theater. Pioneer Park is a great place for the family with younger children wanting a playground, ball parks tennis courts, and a swimming pool.
You can try your hand at gold panning along the Yuba River or Deer Creek. For a great day trip Lake Tahoe and the surrounding area beckons.
Our three cabins are located on 5 acres, next to Camp Augusta, and 80 acre children's summer camp. In the summer months you can hear 'happy camp sounds' as children enjoy swimming, zip lining and singing around the camp fire.
