Mel purchased this house in 2012
The location of this house is unbelievably beautiful and the ocean can been seen and heard from the master bedroom and lanai. The house is my retirement home which I enjoy renting to travelers like yourself. Aloha.
This beautiful property and its many amenities can't be beat. It's the ideal locale for large family gatherings. Its size “one acre” property lush vegetation, beautiful array of hibiscus flowers of various colors, bountiful tropical fruits from lemons, starfruit, avocados, coconuts planted along the perimeter of this one acre lot and walkway that leads from the lanai to the ocean allows for weddings and a place for the bride and groom to walk down the pathway and be blessed in holy matrimony and sealed for all eternity under this beautiful property and remote setting, and a place to stay as well.
This VRBO was a nightmare. The only good thing was the location. The home was very disappointing and customer service was even worse. Let me start the list: 1) The clothes dryer was broken. We packed light knowing there was a W/D but ended up spending 3 hours at the "suds & duds". A heads-up would have been helpful. 2) Turned on the T.V. but no reception because the owner shut off the cable 3) Attempted to use our computer but no Wi-Fi. 4) Bought steaks to grill, but no propane tank on the grill. 5) Had to wash all the dishes because they were too dirty to use. 6) The stove was so filthy, it gave me the creeps to use it. 7) Half of the windows would not open, the handles literally fell off in my hand. 8) Went to get ice cubes for my glass of water, ice cubes full of bugs. 9) Hot water cut out during my shower and then the water completely stopped during my husband's cold shower 10) Attempted 3 times to reach the caretakers of the property, finally received a call back 2 days later only to be told that they couldn't help me with any of these things. 11) Emailed and called the owner, still have not heard from him. 12) My daughter finally reached him once she was home and she was told that there was nothing he could do. "Gee so sorry but he's running a business".
It seems like this owner bought this property, which was probably nice at one time. He has let it run down terribly but continues to market it as a paradise, DON'T STAY HERE, It's a scam and the owner is a scammer.
I am giving the stay 4 stars because I read the reviews and knew what I was likely to encounter. Overall the location is quite nice, with a view out to the ocean from the patio and just steps to a trail on the rocky edge of the Big Island. You can see sealife at the waterfront, and pick fruit from the trees in the yard. Booking the house went well, and the refund of the damage deposit was handled professionally. I was looking for an available home at a peak time, with the intention of finding the vacation highlights around the island - mission accomplished.
But the concerns expressed by others are correct. The dryer did not work, and there was no response to inquiries about it (but I did not try very hard). The dishwasher does not work. The small BBQ only works on one side. The cable did not work (WiFi was fine). The portable A/C units worked. Screens are not tight, so there are some bugs (and a gecko) in the house (expected and I did not mind given the location). Ants in the master bathroom. Long distance to many attractions, so raise your mileage guesses for driving. Non-potable tap water (although there was a water bottle - not sure that was expressed in past reviews) so buy a case of water.
My advice to potential guests is to assume that such characteristics are going to continue and decide if the price, availability and beautiful location (and your tolerance for the negative features above) make it a suitable place for you to stay.
State Upon Arrival:
The house was not at all complete, with no clean bedding, no clean bathrooms and a disgusting kitchen at 5:30 when we arrived. Right as we were about to leave a housekeeper showed up, saying she did not expect us until the 29th (the day we were supposed to check out). We had to leave the house for 2 1/2 hours while they cleaned.
Discrepancy between the ad and the house:
No dryer: The ad states that the house comes with a washer and dryer. This is very important as the area is very damp and humid. There is a dryer in the house but it was broken when we arrived. Apparently the dryer has been broken for a long time.
Broken window screens: The window screens were also not properly set up, letting in TONS of bugs. We fixed them.
No potable water: We were not warned that the water in the house is not considered potable and the in house literature recommended bottled water for drinking. There was no bottled water supplied.
Unreliable running water: We were not warned that there was a limited supply of running water in the house. On the second night after 3 relatively short showers, there was no running water in the house for several hours.
There were no working smoke detectors. While there were two smoke alarms mounted in the hallway of the house, neither was in working condition. One didn't have a battery, and one had a dead battery. We found one unopened in a box in a drawer that did not fit the mounts and placed it on top of a wardrobe. It is required by law that a property is equipped with working smoke detectors.
The contact information provided in the instructions we were sent and the contact information provided in the house were both out of date. In addition, the owner, Mel, was uncommunicative. We also were enormously frustrated that we could not communicate with him given all the problems with the house. We have records of dozens of emails, texts and phone calls that we made to him over the 2 day period when we were in the house. He only responded once.
We had rented the house for 3 days but left after 2 days due to unacceptable conditions. We still have not had our cleaning or security deposits returned.
Upon our arrival around 7.30pm it was very hard to find the house, the entrance being in the dark with no light the owner was waiting for us , we went around the house and found many things not working ( dryer out of order, light in the dining room not working, windows don't close and the best was coming on the our second night the waterpump went off we called the owner for the problem and he told us he was sending the housekeeper over the next morning!!!! ) as we were touring the island sure we get back home late at night and surprise no water pump and very very slow water in the shower and toilets, after touring the hawaiian islands this house was the most remebered one we had and we were so ANXIOUS to leave this place with no REGRETS.
The house itself is well located and very nice but THERE IS NO MAINTENANCE AT ALL !!!!!!! and the owner is a very nice person .
We enjoyed our four night stay at this house and it was a good place to stay for the discovery of Hilo and surroundings, the Pahoa area as well as for the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. There is a nice Farmers Market on Sundays pretty close by and the kitchen equipment (coffee mill, blender in addition to the pots/pans/... you expect) allowed us to make the best of our purchases. It`s a quiet place where you mostly hear the ocean (and the frogs at night).
There are nice bedrooms and comfortable beds. Just be aware that the house is nicely decorated, with Hawaiian artwork. So no rough play inside.
The owner was helpful and responded quickly to solve a problem we had. The information sheets inside the house should be updated though since they contained information which was no longer correct.
I have to start off by saying that we had to fly over to Big Island very last minute to support visit my mother in law who was battling terminal cancer. The owner, Mel, was very caring and sympathetic and quickly made the home available for us. We had a very comfortable stay. The view in the backyard was beautiful and we enjoyed the ocean view. Everything was perfectly cleaned and the bedrooms were also comfortable. The kitchen was also fully equipped with pots/pans/and some basic condiments and spices. We thank you, Mel, for your kindness and compassion.
