About Debbie

I am an architect & artist- Big River Farm has been my art project for many years. I live in downtown Mendocino, but appreciate coming to the Farm to work in the garden and my art studio there, out of the fog. My art studio hides under the redwoods and I am currently creating a printmaking environment for monoprints & woodblock prints there. I also enjoy an occasional moment 'en plein aire' with my watercolors or acrylics as the orchard and redwood trees have always been my muses...

Being by the ocean is also inspiring. I love to kayak on the river & occasionally go abalone diving. I like to ride my bike on the Big River Haul Road. Walking on the beach or headlands is always refreshing & uplifting.

'Blessed are the Children who dwell amongst the Giants'

Debbie purchased this house in 1985

Why Debbie chose North Coast California

Big River Farm is a revitalized former Zen commune on site of an old goat farm and orchard. While the dwellings have been brought to the standard of modern-day comfort, to this day relics of the old Farm and the Zen commune are noticeable throughout in the buildings and meditative spaces.

The garden has remained communal, while the various cabins have been claimed. The Zendo, at the heart of the property, is continuing to welcome visitors and provide the rural country 'Getaway' experience.

What makes this house unique

The Zendo is unique for its seclusion amongst the Redwoods and cherry trees, and yet has beautiful views of the forest understory out of its multitude of windows. Recent renovations to the kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom have created a feel of vacation comfort while still maintaining the rustic air of this country home. Bring sturdy shoes as there is a short walk downhill to the Zendo. And not to forget- the woodstove. To Mendocino locals like ourselves, there's nothing like kicking back in front of our home fireplace to make a good end to another day in paradise..

The house and property was way better than our expectations! Peaceful and tranquil

  • 5 of 5

Really not much to say other than we did not want to leave the house once we got there. Soooo many great little touches that made the Zendo feel like home and a get away at the same time. The selection of books (Lots of Barbara Kingslover!), amazing stereo, all the cooking equipment we could ask for, heater in the bathroom and plenty of windows to soak in that natural forest light. We both loved the decoration and design of the house. My girlfriend Izzi loves decorating our apartment and says whoever decorated the Zendo must be an artist. Gave us so many ideas and goals for our house some day. <3<3<3

Peace and Comfort in the Mendocino Redwoods

  • 5 of 5

I am so delighted to have stayed here with gorgeous views of redwood trees through the many windows and skylights. You feel surrounded by trees. The cabin is pretty and clean with a well stocked kitchen (even a blender for breakfast smoothies), natural bath products, and excellent WiFi service. They also provide extra dog blankets and towels, which is a great idea for those of us traveling with fur babies. There is an adjacent trail through the redwoods for walking your dog too. The bed was very comfortable, and I felt like I was at home. It's close to the town of Mendocino and all the places you'd like to go for hiking, sight-seeing, dinners, groceries, and shopping in Mendocino, and very close to kayak and bike rentals and Big River (or is it Little River? I get them confused). The cabin has a wonderful history you can read about in the book on the coffee table. I highly recommend reading about it. There was a farm cat who liked to look in the window who seemed very friendly too. I appreciated the privacy and will definitely be back.

Wonderful forest retreat!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed here for two nights and wish it had been longer! The home is beautiful and Debbie has paid a lot of attention to detail. The two kids were comfortable on the king sized sofa bed and enjoyed the board game selection. As a family we loved roaming the farm, watching the stars, and exploring. Highly recommend this gem!

Beautiful Stay in the Forest

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved this property!! The location was perfect, nestled in the ferns and trees, surrounded by beautiful scenery. We loved that there were games and puzzles for the kids to enjoy during our down time while just hanging around the house. The kitchen was perfect to prepare breakfast and dinner, while the rest of our day we spent out on the beach and grabbing lunch in town. The house had so many windows that we felt like we didn't miss a bit of nature. My kids especially loved counting the number of banana slugs around the property and hanging out in the cool weather. The sleeping arrangements were perfect as our kids (8 and 10) slept on the pull out sofa and my husband and I got the bedroom. Debbie also left lots of pamphlets for things to do and hiking maps/favorite beaches, to ensure we had all we needed to enjoy our stay. We would definitely stay at this property again and have recommended it to friends as well!

Best location and space ever!

  • 5 of 5

To me, Northern California is redwood trees, the ocean, hiking, great local food and friendly locals! Zendo was the perfect home from which to explore and experience all of the above! My daughter and I stayed here for 3 nights, and didn't want to leave. It rained all but the day we left, but that didn't matter to us! We still were able to get out and enjoy Mendocino and the surrounding area. Debbie's home is a little piece of heaven tucked among the most incredible trees ever! Her home had everything we needed and more. I hope to be able to return to this lovely space again one day. It truly was a special place for making memories.
