We'd like to introduce ourselves. We are Gary and Joanne Bartell. We moved to Homosassa in 1988 to raise our family and quickly got involved with local politics to help shape the future of our community. Gary served as a County Commissioner from 1990 to 2010 and was chairman of the Tourist Development Council for 14 years. Joanne was a founding board member of the Nature Coast Envirothon, a high school environmental education and scholarship program. We both enjoyed spending countless hours over the years educating the youth of the community about the rare and precious natural resources found in this area. Our vision has always been to protect and preserve these amazing natural resources for generations to come.
Gary and Joanne Bartell purchased this cottage in 2012
The Riverlake Cottage property was originally owned by Dazzy Vance, the Hall of Fame major league baseball player (1915 - 1935) who once told a New York Times reporter that all he wanted to do in life is 'to play baseball and fish in Homosassa'. In 1995 we had the opportunity to purchase part of Vance's original land holdings but the Lakefront property was tied up in an estate until November 2012 when a for sale sign appeared on the front lawn - we bought it that same day. With only 10 private property owners along the entire Halls River, Riverlake Cottage is our opportunity to share a rare piece of Old Florida with you.
The Halls River is a rare piece of Old Florida. Largely undeveloped the river is a birder's paradise a fisherman's delight, and a photographer's dream. Blue Crab, Bass, Bream, Sunfish, Redfish, Snook, Ladyfish, Mullet, and various other species of fish can all be seen swimming about in the Halls River. In the sky above you will find Bald Eagles, Green Herons, White Pelicans, Wood Storks, White Ibis, Roseate Spoonbills and many more species of fabulous waterbirds. Along the river you may find dolphin chasing mullet or experience a manatee giving birth. Most days the morning sunrises and evening sunsets are aglow with brilliant colors that will take your breath away. For the adventurous, nightime kayaking or canoeing reveals brilliant stars and planets above - and - with a flashlight shone on the water the surface appears as a sheet of glass and you can see fish, turtles, and other creatures underwater as if you are watching them through a window. Amazing, breathtaking, and captivating moments and memories await you at Riverlake Cottage in Homosassa Florida.
The listing for the cottage was very accurate. We loved the layout of the house. The living space was very large and the kitchen was both spacious and well equipped. One thing I did notice was that there was NEVER a shortage of hot water! Which makes it very nice when traveling with more adults. With only one bathroom there is always a fear of running out of hot water. No worries here!! The bedroom was a nice size and the bed was extremely comfortable! The home was very clean and well taken care of.
The central location of the cottage was great! We were never more than a 20-30 minute car ride from any of the locations we paddled. We were able to paddle the Halls River from the cottage the first night we arrived, it was breath taking! The following day we met my parents at the Chassahowitzka River where we met the resident manatee Rachel and her two babies! We explored the many springs with the caves and even found "The Crack"!
We were able to take a short ride North to Dunnellon to explore the Rainbow River which was completely stunning!
Locally we explored the Homosassa River, Monkey Island, Crystal River and Three Sisters springs area. The highlight of the trip for me was kayaking on the Weeki Wachee River.
We can not wait to come back with our kids!
Thank you so much Gary & Joanne for sharing your beautiful cottage with us!
We spent a month at this cottage and loved the peace and quiet of the property. The location of the property was perfect and we could easily and quickly find great places to eat, shop and explore. We saw the manatee which was a huge reason for coming to this part of Florida.
We could walk our furbaby and often met other people in the area walking too. We met and talked with some of the same neighbors several times and felt we had made new friends.
We met the neighborhood "pet", a Great Blue Heron, who stopped by often to see what we were up to and hope for a handout. We miss seeing him peek in our window to get our attention.
The cottage was decorated so cute and was clean and roomy. We found the owners to be so friendly and willing to do what they could to help with our stay.
We had many friends in nearby communities who came to see our "home away from home" and all were impressed. When our four weeks came to an end, we only wished we could stay longer.
Thank you Joanne and Gary for making us feel at home.
Tom, Pat and Mandy too!
Ideally located for a long weekend or week getaway with the family. Perfect location with easy access to State Parks, hiking and on property river access. We took out the canoe and had a great day with a local who was diving and checking out a manatee. Great Weekend, we will be back. Owners are experts on the area and a great resource for the best places to go, the informational packet in the home had everything we needed.
The cottage was clean, very comfortable, and very well equipped. There are lots of windows for views of nature in every direction. I will always remember my bedroom with view of the lake outside the window. I love seeing that view every time I walk into my bedroom. The owner was very nice and helpful. When we checked in, we asked for blender for making smoothies, within an hour, a new blender was delivered to us. The river access and the kayaks and canoes provided was great, easily accessible. The cottage is so comfortable, yet there is so much nature of old Florida as soon as you look or step outside the cottage, it feels as though you are living in a time machine.
We stayed for the 4th of July weekend. It was great to get somewhere and have this cottagweek exceed our expectations. New floors, and new paint make a place feel much nicer and clean. We cooked at the home every night, and all utensils, pots and pans we needed were there. Owners live next door and are very helpful if you need anything. Super quiet, away from all the hotels, but less than 10 minutes to launch your boat. We will be going back!
Loved, loved, loved this location and the accommodations could not have been better.
As far as my family is concerned the location is second to none! Not only was the fishing great but as so many other guests mentioned this river is a paddlers' paradise. Our river adventure started with being greeted by two adorably huge emus that look just like Sesame Street's Big Bird. A little further down the river was the cutest potbelly pig imaginable foraging along the river bank. Not 3 minutes away from the launching ramp we saw multiple families of mallards, several large water birds and an eagle was flying overhead. Just when we thought it couldn't get any better we came upon a family of manatees and the smallest of the group came right up to our kayak and looked us right in the eyes just before it flipped over on its back for a tummy rub. Talk about perfect!!!
The cottage itself is super cute, clean and comfortable with every amenity provided that our family could have wanted or needed. I loved that the owners provided a "Cottage Guest Book", a 3-ring binder with a cute cover and full of local shopping, dining, and attraction information as well as historical information on the cottage itself. The owners also provided a navigability and fishing map of the Halls River which my husband used to find fishing holes where he caught dozens of large-mouthed bass and more redfish than he got on a paid fishing excursion on another river. (All fish were released back to the Halls River.)
If there were categories for rating our stay we would give 5 STARS for the COTTAGE - 5 STARS for the LOCATION - and 5 STARS for the OWNERS!
We sent pictures to the owner which we hope they will put on their vacation website. Simply can not wait to go back. We already booked our next stay!
