About Gary and Joanne Bartell

We'd like to introduce ourselves. We are Gary and Joanne Bartell. We moved to Homosassa in 1988 to raise our family and quickly got involved with local politics to help shape the future of our community. Gary served as a County Commissioner from 1990 to 2010 and was chairman of the Tourist Development Council for 14 years. Joanne was a founding board member of the Nature Coast Envirothon, a high school environmental education and scholarship program. We both enjoyed spending countless hours over the years educating the youth of the community about the rare and precious natural resources found in this area. Our vision has always been to protect and preserve these amazing natural resources for generations to come.

Gary and Joanne Bartell purchased this cottage in 2012

Why Gary and Joanne Bartell chose Homosassa

The Riverlake Cottage property was originally owned by Dazzy Vance, the Hall of Fame major league baseball player (1915 - 1935) who once told a New York Times reporter that all he wanted to do in life is 'to play baseball and fish in Homosassa'. In 1995 we had the opportunity to purchase part of Vance's original land holdings but the Lakefront property was tied up in an estate until November 2012 when a for sale sign appeared on the front lawn - we bought it that same day. With only 10 private property owners along the entire Halls River, Riverlake Cottage is our opportunity to share a rare piece of Old Florida with you.

What makes this cottage unique

The Halls River is a rare piece of Old Florida. Largely undeveloped, the river is a birder's paradise, a fisherman's delight, and a photographer's dream. Blue Crab, Bass, Bream, Sunfish, Redfish, Snook, Ladyfish, Mullet, and various other species of fish can all be seen swimming about in the Halls River. In the sky above you will find Bald Eagles, Green Herons, White Pelicans, Wood Storks, White Ibis, Roseate Spoonbills and many more species of fabulous waterbirds. Along the river you may find dolphin chasing mullet or experience a manatee nursing a newborn calf. Along the shore you will enjoy the antics of a family of emus and a flock of Welsh Harlequin ducks that free range along the shoreline and swim in the river. Most days the morning sunrises and evening sunsets are aglow with brilliant colors that will take your breath away. For the adventurous, night time kayaking or canoeing reveals brilliant stars and planets above - and - with a flashlight shone on the water the surface appears as a sheet of glass and you can see fish, turtles, and other creatures underwater as if you are watching them through a window. Amazing, breathtaking, and captivating moments and memories await you at Riverlake Cottage in Homosassa Florida.

A kayakers paradise! Perfect in every way!

  • 5 of 5

The listing for the cottage was very accurate. We loved the layout of the house. The living space was very large and the kitchen was both spacious and well equipped. One thing I did notice was that there was NEVER a shortage of hot water! Which makes it very nice when traveling with more adults. With only one bathroom there is always a fear of running out of hot water. No worries here!! The bedroom was a nice size and the bed was extremely comfortable! The home was very clean and well taken care of.

The central location of the cottage was great! We were never more than a 20-30 minute car ride from any of the locations we paddled. We were able to paddle the Halls River from the cottage the first night we arrived, it was breath taking! The following day we met my parents at the Chassahowitzka River where we met the resident manatee Rachel and her two babies! We explored the many springs with the caves and even found "The Crack"!

We were able to take a short ride North to Dunnellon to explore the Rainbow River which was completely stunning!

Locally we explored the Homosassa River, Monkey Island, Crystal River and Three Sisters springs area. The highlight of the trip for me was kayaking on the Weeki Wachee River.

We can not wait to come back with our kids!

Thank you so much Gary & Joanne for sharing your beautiful cottage with us!

Beautiful Riverfront Location

  • 5 of 5

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The river was peaceful and a joy to kayak. The cottage was just right. Not to big, not to small. Easy to keep clean and we very much appreciated the owners did not force a cleaning fee on us. This was the deciding reason for us in choosing Riverlake Cottage and we are so glad we did! (More vacation rental owners should take note and do the same.) We will definitely be back and we plan a much longer stay next time.

Phenomenal Location!

  • 5 of 5

Riverlake Cottage came highly recommended to us from members of the IFA Kayak Fishing Association and it did not disappoint! The cottage is clean, comfortable and well stocked. The owners are attentive to details that made our stay carefree. The location is phenomenal! Beautiful wooded yard. Butterflies everywhere. The small private lake has a floating dock and picnic table which we thoroughly enjoyed. The river is loaded with fish and crabs. We netted a blue crab dinner for 4 in a couple hours and hooked more bass in one day than we had on a previous 3-day fishing trip on the Suwannee. Watching the sun set over the river with a drink in hand and fish cooking on the grill was a great way to end the day.

We'd be remiss if we didn't give accolades in this review to the owner's son who is a licensed captain. We went on a fishing excursion with him that really made our trip complete. Redfish, Trout, Snook, Shark. You name it, we caught it! Thank you Captain Gary for a memorable end to a great vacation!

Can't wait to go back!

Loved the cottage!

  • 5 of 5

My boyfriend and I stayed here over a weekend for a short getaway. It was exactly what we were looking for. We arrived after dark to lit candles which made it very welcoming. The cottage was very clean, spacious, plenty of towels, coffee, spices in the kitchen, all the basics you need. I didn’t realize before arriving the kayaks are in a separate area on the river but easily found them the next morning. The kayak launch is a very short walk to the left of the cottage. There is a sign that points the way to the river. We thoroughly enjoyed kayaking over the weekend, we toured a local winery, built a fire at night and relaxed. I look forward to returning for another relaxing trip. I highly recommend if you’re looking to stay at a place with a homey feel, has privacy and you don’t want the hotel feel. We will be back.

Perfect in every way

  • 5 of 5

What a great place to relax and unwind! The house was clean, well appointed, and had all the basics we needed. The location is peaceful and beautiful. We netted enough crabs for dinner and caught plentiful keeper fish. The screened porch is wonderful for barbecuing, eating and reading. Highly recommend Riverlake Cottage. We will be back!

Charming Waterfront Cottage at an Excellent Price!

  • 5 of 5

An excellent price! Riverlake Cottage is an alluring waterfront vacation home surrounded by nature and beauty on a beautifully landscaped property. The cottage was wonderful to come back to after being on the water all day. It is nicely furnished, spotlessly clean, has a well equipped kitchen, new Weber grill, large screened porch, and has an enchanting fountain in the water and lights twinkling in the trees. The owners were super helpful, with lots of suggestions of activities and places to visit and dine. My husband and I spent the entire summer traveling to different places in all four corners of the US. Without question, the highlight of our three month long trip is definitely the guided boat tour we went on with Captain Gary, the owner’s son who grew up on the Homosassa River. Captain Gary is an exceptionally knowledgeable and charismatic guide with a treasure trove of local lore. We highly recommend Riverlake Cottage for a vacation rental property and Captain Gary of Homosassa Tours if you will be seeking a fishing, manatee or river tour during your stay. TEN WELL-DESERVED STARS! ✩✩✩✩✩✩✩✩✩✩
