Comfortable Rustic Retreat

Bedrooms 3
Space 1,818 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, sleeps 8

A quiet neighborhood to call home whether coming to work or to play or maybe to visit family and friends. This comfortable home is convenient to much of what San Antonio has to offer. It is close to great shopping (La Cantera, The Rim and North Star), dining, Hardberger Park, Fiesta Texas, UTSA, the South Texas Medical Center, USAA and the airport. Downtown attractions such as the famous River Walk, Pearl Brewery, Hemisfair Park, the Alamo, and Majestic Theatre are an easy 20 minute drive away.

This is a clean, NON SMOKING property perfect for a family to meet up for some San Antonio fun or a business trip where you want the feeling of home.

This was our first home and has sentimental value to us, as this was our children's first home . Early in 2017, we decided to turn it into a rustic style home for visitors coming to San Antonio. We have decorated the home with reclaimed rustic wood - mostly reclaimed heat treated pallets. It has truly been a labor of love and many months of work, as we did all of the work ourselves. From staining the floors, to tearing apart pallets, distressing the wood, to scrounging hard wood flooring that others were throwing away, we turned what some consider trash into treasure. We are still working on landscaping the yard - seems like that will never end - UGH! There is plenty of parking space with room for four cars in the driveway (which is partially shaded) as well as street parking, but the garage is not available for parking.

There is a gas grill in the back yard as well as a nice patio area with a table and chairs to sit and chat with family or friends surrounded by tiki torches in the evening.

There is a 55" Roku TV on the wall in the loving area as well as high speed WiFi internet access.

If you will be needing extra bedding, we do have a very comfortable queen air mattress and a twin "roll away" that can be used in the front living area; however, it has two entrances that do not allow for privacy. Please let us know in advance if you will be needing these.

The entire home and yard are for your enjoyment-just no use of the garage-we are still working on projects in there!

Sean and/or Karen will be available to assist and we encourage our guests to get to know us. We enjoy the hospitality of it all.

Other things to note

The home has several steps that lead into the kitchen, and back of the home. If a guest has a handicap that makes stepping up 2 steps at a time, the only room that will be easily accessible (no steps) is the room on the front of the house that allows for no privacy.

We also have a large kennel available if needed.

Totally Texas

  • 5 of 5

Great stay in a central location. Beds were comfortable in the master and second bedroom. I had an adult son stay in the third bedroom with the twin beds and futon. He was not super comfortable but he can sleep anywhere. Nice big bathroom to share. Master bath was nice and clean. Sean and Karen were kind enough to leave a delicious snack on the table (so appreciated since we arrived after midnight and didn't realize how hungry we all were!) When booking we wanted something that looked like everything we imagined Texas to be. We loved all of the Texas star decor and the pallet wall was amazing! Sean and Karen were excellent hosts and we enjoyed our stay!

It was was very welcoming. The house was clean and comfortable. We enjoyed our stay and hated to leave. The house was clean and adequate and housed all of our family members. It is not a new house, and is in need of some updating and repairs. There are numerous multiple levels, so I would not recommend this property for anyone with mobility challenges or toddlers. Homeowners were very responsive and easy to reach. With that being said, this is the first time we have ever had the homeowner actually meet us at the property to walk us through. House was okay.

Owner's Response: Sorry you felt our home was only adequate. Please share with us what updating you feel is needed. The only repair we are aware of is the valve for the fireplace that we learned of upon your arrival as we were trying to show you how to start the gas logs. We have included in the property description information regarding the 2 steps up to the bedrooms and down to the kitchen, but we lived there with toddlers (and we have had guests with toddlers) without any issues. Since you did not have toddlers with you, I hope no one had mobility issues causing difficulty during your stay. Thank you for your review; we welcome feedback and are always looking for ways to improve the guest experience. We strive for perfection. Hope you enjoyed the Texas wine!

Charter Oaks is a quiet middle-class suburban neighborhood situated in a great central location. Several major highways (I-10, Loop 410 and 281- via Wurzbach Parkway) are easily accessible making it easy to get to most any location in San Antonio (assuming you avoid high traffic times). Downtown attractions such as the River Walk, the Alamo, Majestic Theatre, Tobin Center for Performing Arts, Hemisfair and Brackenridge Park are an easy 20 minute drive away as is the San Antonio Missions National Historic Park just south of downtown. The home is very close to San Antonio's new Hardberger Park. This 330-acre former dairy farm is one of the few remaining undeveloped parcels in San Antonio - the best place in the heart of San Antonio to see and feel the wild. Numerous walking, running, and hiking trails are popular with fitness enthusiasts, and the interconnected Salado Creek Greenway extends the biking and hiking trails for many more miles. Hardberger Park is less than 3 miles away. A lesser known park, nice for a quiet morning or evening hike, is Eisenhower Park a little more than 7 miles away.

A diverse array of affordable dining, shopping, and entertainment possibilities are available a few minutes away. There are many fabulous restaurants in San Antonio (too many to list) but we are happy to give you suggestions depending on your taste and budget. We have lived in this area of San Antonio for over 25 years and are more than happy to give you some more personalized recommendations depending on your interests.

If amusement parks are what you are looking for, Fiesta Texas is 15 minutes away as is shopping at The RIM or La Cantera Mall. Top Golf is close by for you golf enthusiasts or for an actual golf course head to Silverhorn golf club less than 5 miles away.

If you are needing to go to the South Texas Medical Center for work, a meeting, or health reasons it is less than 4 miles away.

If you are looking to be a bit more adventurous and leave San Antonio, we are familiar with lots of the surrounding areas as well. The quaint town of Boerne is about 30 minutes up I-10 where you can stroll down Hauptstrasse (Main Street) and experience shops, dining options and a local brewery. You are then entering the Texas Hill Country which is full of beautiful scenery whether you are headed to Enchanted Rock, Fredericksburg, or out west to the Cowboy Capital of Bandera. You could also head to the state capitol in Austin, about 1.5 hours North up I-35, to spend the day at Zilker Park swimming in the spring fed Barton Springs or see the Ladybird Johnson Widflower Center or visit the Bullock Texas History Museum. If you don't want to venture so far north you can head to the other German town north of San Antonio-New Braunfels, where cool water rivers are enjoyed during the hot summer months or for a different type of activity head to Texas Ski Ranch where you can wakeboard pulled by a cable instead of a boat. Visit the small town of Gruene for some unique shopping experiences and dance at Gruene Hall, built in 1878, Texas’ oldest continually operating and most famous dance hall. The Tanger Outlet Malls in San Marcos are another shopping option but pick your time wisely-can be very crowded close to holidays and on weekends.
