Traveling to Daufuskie where the island does not connect to any mainland by bridge, you'll enjoy a beautiful ferry ride from Hilton Head where you'll leave your car and take a step back in time. Once at the dock you'll travel to our house by way of land transportation or golf cart.
Our home is located directly across from the 18th green of the Melrose Jack Nicklaus Golf Course with 5 bedroom/5 bath home gives you a perfect view of the Calibogue Sound and the Atlantic Ocean. You can step off the front porch, walk across the 18th green, and right onto the beach at low tide. Enjoy rocking on the front porch taking in the serene atmosphere and wild life, with room for the whole family to experience the history and beauty of Daufuskie.
Coming from a small town in Pa. our family built this home in 2000 after spending almost 14 years vacationing on Daufuskie. My Dad played in the Harbor Town Heritage Pro Am Tournament for several years, and it was the one place our family would vacation each summer, some falls, and even a few Christmases.
The Island has such rich history, including a little First Union African Baptist church we attend while we are there, with a rich history that could never be matched. We grew up vacationing on the island like it was a second home. We found Indian pottery and arrowheads while walking the beach. These are just a few of the historical aspects deeming Daufuskie to be so unique, rich, and diverse in its offerings.
Listening to the calm and serene sounds of the Calibogue Sound, & watching the bald eagles fly by, and viewing the fireworks at Harbor Town and Tybee island on the 4th of July are just a few things we see from our front porch. Our home is set up to enjoy the company of one another, to cook and share a meal, catch blue crabs in the ocean when the tide is low, or share dinner with an islander at the Daufuskie Crab Company or the Eagles Nest at Bloody Point; or we may enjoy more downhome Southern Country cooking at Marshside Mamas while listening to a live band with the locals. These are just a few of the special things we look forward to enjoying on our visits to this island paradise we call Daufuskie.
Our family had a wonderful time at the Twigg house during our stay from July 10-15, 2016. We were a group of 8 adults and 5 children, 4 years and younger. The house worked great for our large group. We found the large open area downstairs and the big porches were perfect for the little ones' play area when we didn't feel like venturing out into the hot midday sun.The dining area with seating for everyone to eat at one time made meal time fun. We greatly appreciated the two sets of washer and dryer and having the beach towels supplied. And having a very active 14 month old, we were especially grateful for the stair gates, pack and play and booster chair that were provided! The views of the ocean were spectacular, especially in the early mornings. Lauren was very helpful and quick to respond with my many questions prior to the trip and even during our stay. She really went out of her way to make sure we had everything we needed while there. We felt like we had "stepped back in time" while on Daufuskie, and came to appreciate the slow, relaxed pace on the island. We enjoyed the golf cart rides to explore the rich history of the island and found the people to be very friendly. It was a very fun and memorable family vacation!
Our family of twelve stayed in the Twigg House June 1-10, 2016 and found it to be perhaps the most wonderful house we've ever rented for vacation. The minor complexities of reaching and departing Daufuskie Island are well worth working through for first-time visitors to the Island like our family. From the wonderful pottery dishware to the new beach tent for infants, Lauren and Susan took very good care of us all. You can be sure we will be returning to the Twigg House in the very near future! This was our fourth trip to Daufuskie and it was by far the best! The Twigg house was wonderful, even better than the pictures and description. The location was wonderful. The views were unbelievable. The sunrise every morning from the Master Bedroom was breathtaking! The home is very comfortable for 2 or 14. The kitchen is well equipped for anything you want to cook. Everything was clean and well-maintained. I can't say enough about how great the owners were. They answered every question quickly. We really felt like they were old friends! The whole process of renting was so easy. We ate at Melrose Beach Club, Marshside Mamas, Eagles Nest and Old Daufuskie Crab. The food and service at all was great! We also rode bikes, played golf and rode horses. Riding around the island in a golf cart with our dog was a highlight of our trip. Thank you Lauren for giving us the opportunity to stay at such a wonderful place. We can't wait to come back in June with our children and grandchildren!
We could not have picked a better place to stay! First off the making of the reservation was painless & the owners could not have been more helpful , friendly and accessible. Once we are arrived the house was unbelievable but so comfortable. Everything we needed to cook with or entertain was there, not missing a thing. The morning view was UNREAL & the sunset was beautiful. I say this without hesitation, if you want to stay on Daufuskie Island you need to stay at the Twigg house. We had the best time & made memories that will last a lifetime. Thank you for allowing us to stay at your beautiful home.
We had a great week in this lovely, spacious house! The location is an easy golf cart ride from the Beach Club and pools at Melrose, and from the Melrose Beach. There is beach across the golf course in front of the house, but it is hard to get to and doesn't exist at high tide. The house has gorgeous views of the water though, and beautiful sunrises. We loved the upstairs deck for evening nightcaps in the rocking chairs! The house has loads of room and is very comfortable! We had a 3 month old baby with us so appreciated the pack 'n play! The bathrooms are large and worked well for us, too. Our granddaughter loved the big showers that she could get in without getting wet till she was ready. She also enjoyed the kid-friendly VHS movies! It was terrific to have a large kitchen and 2 dining tables, and all the space was open enough that no one felt isolated. With little kids and fishermen and golfers it was also a help to have 2 sets of washer and dryer. We thoroughly enjoyed beaching, swimming at the pool, seeing all the wildlife, eating at all 4 restaurants on the island, fishing and golfing! The whole island is very laid back and uncrowded, quite relaxing. The only thing we hated were the biting flies...ouch!! Also, the owner was great to work with. I got quick helpful responses to all my questions. And help after we got home in retrieving an item we had inadvertently left behind. The May River Ferry was a fun way to go to Daufuskie--it was our own nature cruise both ways with the captain stopping so we could watch the dolphins around the boat.
We stayed in this home with our entire family and found we all had plenty of space (13 of us). The Dining room has 2 large tables plus there is room at the bar to eat. I also love that this home has 2 living rooms. We all had a space to stretch out and cool down after a day on the beach. The pool has great food, and the staff is very friendly. The beds were all very comfortable and it was nice to have a bathroom for each bedroom. The porches are tremendous and are where we spent most of our time when we were not at the beach or pool. The owners were so helpful with all of our questions and we are already booking a trip to go back again. Thanks for sharing your home with us!
