Great house for artistic retreats or weekend escapes in the Hudson River Valley near Woodstock and Saugerties. Perched on mountain with seasonal river views, vintage 1920's 3 BR Arts and Crafts house takes you out of time while giving you access to nearby arts communities, HITS, skiing and other Catskill culture.
The view from the sunny front porch is great for contemplative work such as writing, or hanging out with friends and family. Stars are clear at night. House is perched on the mountain near a main road with trails going up, a retreat 'grotto' with hammock up the hill for time in nature and a vintage parlor stove for chilly months. Only about a half a mile from the river, walks to the water are possible. Bike is available for guests as well.
1600 s.f. house has an open movement room for yoga (converts to a large DR in the winter), a living room, a kitchen and a large porch. It technically has 4BR used as follows: One with a full bed, one with a single, one is a meditation room where a double futon can be set up for a bedroom, and one is a creative space. Porch furniture converts to single beds if needed.
Good food and shopping can be found in Saugerties under 4 miles away, Catskill 7 miles away or Woodstock 14 miles away. There are no nearby stores and only a few houses, but there is a post office across the street. You will need a car.
Great for train lovers as train passes in view of the front porch. Not good for light sleepers.
I am a healer and body psychotherapist, writer, mother of 4, hospice worker and former bridge engineer. Redoing old houses sensitively is one of my loves. I did this house a few years ago after finding it virtually untouched from a single owner who lived here until he died at 105 years old. It is simple, and has a lovely historical character.
Jeanne purchased this house in 2010
This house is my own writing retreat full of poetry and books, light, air and town life while still being private and close to nature. I enjoy having others here who can respect the special 'out of time' atmosphere here. This property is quirky but wonderful, much like this region.
Imagine a trip to a grandmother's house in 1940's or 50's but nicely renovated. I love this feeling. There is no internet, no TV, trains to watch, a mountain to explore, a river to walk to, a bike to ride, friendly post office activity across the street, Hammocks up the hill, Creative arts space. Time to think, feel, read, gaze out windows, create, write, make a fire, enjoy friends and family. Simple but wonderful.
We only had a short stay at the house but found it to be very relaxing and welcoming.
The owner, Jeanne, is really helpful and responsive and it's clear that she loves this retreat.
The nearby train lines are mentioned in Jeanne's summary of the house and so don't be surprised when you hear "that whistle blowing".
Do be sure to visit the Lighthouse in Saugerties - it's a beautiful spot for a late summer/fall evening!
we enjoyed but its not for everyone. if you dig trains this is the spot!
Would stay there again. Only downside is stairway access from the street. Mildly difficult for carrying luggage, but house is worth the effort. Owner is very pleasant and accomodating. Highly recommend
Hudson River Valley near Saugerties and West Camp - This area is full of artistic and cultural activities throughout the year, but especially in the summer. It is a hotbed for arts and creativity as well as short drive to HITS (horse venue) and the lovely Saugerties. The house gives easy access to nature preserves, the river, arts activities, skiing, HITS, good restaurants and shops and is just a culturally interesting and beautiful place.
