A great getaway in a perfect location - 3 miles south of Suttons Bay, 12 miles North of Traverse City on beautiful Leelanau Peninsula and in Michigan wine country. Spacious 3 bedroom/2 bath home on West Grand Traverse Bay with deck, dock, and 100 feet private frontage including a sandy beach. An open floor plan with large windows provides stunning views of the Caribbean blues of the bay and a great yard for relaxation and play.
Perfect for families or wine tasting weekends with various spaces to relax, read, play games, catch up, and hang out. This home is comfortable, casual and you never have to feel on top of each other. The overview below covers what the home has. We're happy to answer questions.
BEACH/PROPERTY - The property is directly on the water - no roads or other barriers to cross. The beach is at the end of the yard down a few steps. We provide a bonfire pit perfect for roasting marshmallows and telling stories. Situated south of Cherry Cove, the water is shallow and calm (good for children). A dock, canoe, kayaks and sand toys are available. The water has a mix of smooth sand areas and areas with small stones/rocks.
BEDROOM/BATHS - The master has a king bed, the second bedroom has a queen; and the third bedroom has two full/twin bunks. There is an additional twin bed, and a pull out queen couch bed in the family room. Two full baths, both remodeled in early 2015 – one with two sinks and tub/shower; second with one sink/shower. There is an attic fan which cools the bedrooms, ceiling fans in each room, and additional floor fans available. The home does not have air conditioning.
AMENITIES – You'll have "home away from home" conveniences including Wifi, cable, bed linens, pillows, towels, dishwasher, microwave, coffee maker, blender, griddle, toaster, waffle iron, toaster oven, tableware, flatware, kitchen utensils, cookware, bakeware, serveware, fridge, stove, full size washer and dryer, gas grill, and deck furniture. We provide a standard guest supply of body wash, hand soap, dish soap, dishwasher detergent, laundry detergent, toilet paper, paper towels, Kleenex, and napkins. There is typically an array of condiments and most common spices as well.
There is an air hockey and foosball table, as well as a selection of children's toys, movies, games, cards, novels and children's books.
THINGS TO DO - The area hosts many activities. In addition to the over 20 vineyards in Leelanau County, this home is not far from the Leelanau Sands Casino, shopping, excellent dining, local farm markets and stands, golf courses, bike trails, art galleries and all of the many other attractions of Leelanau peninsula. The Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes are very popular, and Fishtown in Leland is a great afternoon visit. Catch the sunset over Lake Michigan in Leland at The Cove and Rick's Café. We live in the Detroit area with our 3 school aged children. We grew up in Michigan - one on the west side and one on the east, and have vacationed in northwest Michigan since meeting in 1996. We have always loved the Leelanau peninsula and are so excited to finally have a home here. We've built great memories with family and friends already and look forward to building many more. Purchasing a home up north was a dream of ours. We've been slowly improving it over time; rescuing the home from years of inattention, the beach from disrepair, and the yard from major overgrowth. We love it and we hope you do too!
Mary and Brian purchased this house in 2011
We fell in love with the home the minute we walked in the front door and saw the spectacular view. The open layout of the place was exactly what we were looking for. It's beautiful in the summer, stunning with color in the fall, and calm & cozy in the winter. We love the location with so many activities nearby, yet the quiet of being out of Traverse City chaos. It's the perfect place to relax with friends and family.
It's great to be in an area where you feel 'away from it all' but also to have access to restaurants, shopping, grocery and hardware shopping, entertainment, wineries, a casino, and amazing outdoor beauty all nearby.
When we walked in, the view of the lake was awesome! The deck was great for our large group of 10. It was nice that kayaks and floatables were provided. There was plenty of room in the house. So no one was on top of one another. The kitchen had everything you needed to cook. There is no air conditioning. So it was warm in the evening as temperatures were in the 80's during the day. Ceiling fans were in the rooms, so that helped to circulate the air. For those who slept at the front of the house, it was a little noisy due to the house being located right off the main highway. I know our group would stay here again. It was comfortable and very relaxing. The lake was the focal point, and everyone enjoyed it!
Had to locate a place large enough to comfortably house 6 adults and 3 children. Mary & Brian's place was a gem of a find. The setting and views were breath taking whether we were on the deck, sunroom, adirondack chairs, beach or dock. The kids spent countless hours in the canoe and on the kayaks (adults enjoyed kayaks as well). Having our own little beach with a fire pit was probably the highlight of the evenings. Several fires and many evenings of relaxing by the water.
The house is meticulously maintained both inside and out. What struck me about the inside was how well and thoughtfully stocked the house was. Mary and Brian left no stone unturned. Did not need to bring anything except food, their home has it all making it a true home away from home. The property down by the water was pristine as well. Again we had 9 people in our group and at no time did we fell "cramped."
The women in our group are still raving about the number and quality of wineries in the area. Our group had some golfers. Played Bahle Farms and Manitou Passage Golf Courses. Would recommend either. The kids had a blast at Pirates Cove. Sleeping Bear Dunes were an experience as well.
Great Micro Brewery up the street (Hop Lot) with a very cool outdoor sitting area and food is cooked to order on an outside grill. Also experienced great views when dining at The Cove in Leland. Highly recommend Chimosky Bakery and Roman Wheel Pizza right in Sutton's Bay (about 5-10 minute drive north).
A very nice little touch when we arrived were supplies for Smores (and a "Smores Recipe" sheet...the peppermint pattie suggestion was great)! Mary communicated great with us and was quick to respond when we did have a few questions.
Our travelling crew doesnt usually go to the same place twice however were are already discussing a return so that we could spend more time enjoying the great sunrises and cool breezes that we experienced. Mary and Brian...thank you!
This property was wonderful! The views from the house were beautiful. We loved the fact the house was kid friendly. There were toys and things for them to do if it rained. Mary and Brian also had kayaks, canoes, outside water toys and life jackets. We could tell the owners had children. They had thought of everything for the kids! We also found on the counter a welcome bag full of goodies and a binder. The binder was very helpful! It contained information on things to do, fishing spots and restaurants. We referred to it several times. The goodies of course were greatly appreciated! The owners are very thoughtful and kind people! They checked to make sure we got in the home okay and that everything was going well. I would highly recommended renting this house!
Six ladies, Sip & Savor Weekend that included private transportation, Beautiful house and grounds -- we were left wanting for nothing! The Birks obviously care about their home and the comfort of their renters as even the smallest details were thought of. All of us commented that we would definitely rent here in the future and recommend to others.
What a fabulous location! The view was amazing. Close to both Sutton's Bay and Traverse City. The house was filled with amenities: canoe and kayaks. How nice just to bring it down a few yards and go right into the water. The house was perfect for 2 small children, ours are 3 1/2 and 18 months. There was plenty of toys for both kids, a pack-n-play (I brought my own sheets), a highchair and a toddler race car bed that my son loved! (I brought my own sheets) The house was overall clean, looks like newly remodeled bathrooms. We didn't cook anything but looked like they were pretty equipped. Just clean the overhead stove before you use. There is a toaster oven and regular coffee machine with filters which came in handy!
This house was an absolute pleasure to stay in, it was very spacious and was very accommodating for our twelve guests. The back yard was amazing and the rental came with canoes and kayaks which was very convenient. All the amenities were just right and the instructions and guides were clearly written. The only downside to this is there is no air conditioning in the house. Some people may say "you're right on the lake, you shouldn't need it" this statement is true until you start cooking to to feed twelve people. The house gets real hot real quick and turning on the fans and opening windows did little to help, especially at it when all the bugs are out. We had a ceiling literally covered with flies inside the house and had to kill them and vacuum at 2am in the morning. The amount of bugs on the ceiling were equivalent to pores in the human skin. It was very scary. Had the house had air conditioning we would not have had the bug problem because we wouldn't have needed to open EVERY window.
