Think traveling with kids means sacrificing gorgeous, architecturally inspiring accommodations?
Think again. Your kids will feel like woodland creatures—and you’ll feel like a travel-planning wizard—when your family settles into our mid-century modern cabin, tucked into a dense stand of redwoods beside the Russian River in Guerneville. (One ancient redwood has been presiding over our part of the forest for over a thousand years!)
A true mid-century modern gem, Lucky Bend Lookout was architect-designed and constructed in 1966, and is kid-friendly down to the childproofed details. It’s environmentally friendly, too—during a recent remodel, we took care to increase thermal performance by 400 percent (that includes heated floors!) and used only sustainable building materials and native plants. Protecting nature—which is so gorgeously on display here—is a priority for us.
In true mid-century modern tradition, the Lucky Bend Lookout’s open floor plan, elevated treehouse-style deck, enormous windows, and warm redwood walls and ceilings merge indoor and outdoor spaces.
Have you ever vacationed somewhere that’s brimming with natural beauty and felt guilty for just wanting to relax inside with a good book? Here, that’s no dilemma.
Watch ospreys soar among the redwoods from the couch in the living area, decorated with clean lines and whimsical fabrics. Or sauté fresh vegetables from the Guerneville Farmers Market in our fully stocked kitchen as you watch your kids play outside on the deck.
Then, present your handiwork to your hungry family at the sleek dining table—which has room for 10—and watch the Russian River drifting by in the fading light of evening while the adults sip our region’s famous wines. Or you can get even closer to nature and feast at the eight-person outdoor dining table on the spacious deck among the trees.
After dinner, get cozy in the living room and watch the stars reflect their sparkle on the river as you browse Netflix, HuluPlus, or Pandora Radio on our 47-inch flat screen TV. The couch doubles as a pull-out bed.
For the kids, we keep our cabin clear of breakable knickknacks and stocked with all the gear you need. Two Pack ‘n Play, high chair, step stool, potty-chair, toddler bed rail, and stroller keep the little ones safe. Plus, we supply a few extra goodies to keep them happy, like a water table, a swing set under the deck, and some inside toys.
One bedroom features a reading nook and a sturdy set of bunk beds for a fun, summer-camp setup, except much comfier—we use memory foam mattresses on all of our beds. And your kids’ imaginations will run wild with the magical redwood grove in view just outside their window.
Two adult bedrooms, with queen-sized beds and mid-century modern details like shag carpeting and low-profile beds, invite you to sink in for the night. A view of the redwoods will greet you in the morning.
Downtown Guerneville is only a mile from the Lucky Bend Lookout. We are located 10 minutes by car from the nearest winery and 15 to 20 minutes from dozens more. There’s even kid-friendly wineries in the area! A sandy beach along the Russian River is a 10-minute walk from the property, or hop in the car and head 20 minutes to the Sonoma Coast to surf, explore tide pools, and spot harbor seals sunning themselves. Lucky Bend Lookout comes with beach chairs, an umbrella, beach toys, a cooler, and two cruiser bikes.
Our home is a dream for families who love the river life with a floating dock, along with stairs that lead directly to the river. The water will literally be steps away! As our guest, you’ll also enjoy complimentary use of our two kayaks, and canoe. The floating dock is not guaranteed to be available on a set date. It is usually in the water approximately from Memorial Day through October.
Our calendar fills fast—the time to book your mid-century modern oasis is today!

Lucky Bend Lookout is owned by two San Francisco families-the Martins and the Peabodys. Sarah and Eric Peabody have two children Raylah and Dean, and Regan and Teresa have a son Bennet. The four of us are from the SF Bay Area and Texas. Eric and Regan are both architects and have been the leaders of the design team for the renovation of the house.
Sarah Peabody purchased this house in 2012
Both families were looking for a place where they could give their children the gift of growing up in nature. When they found this house last summer, Regan said, 'This place is like a unicorn!' It is like no other house in the area with its beautiful location and authentic mid-century modern architecture. We look forward to enjoying the river with our families over the years and we want to share the fun with other families when we cannot be there.
When we first saw this home we knew it was special. With the river just a few yards away, an open floor plan, the large glass expanse on the south side of the house and the exposed structural system, it all comes together in a perfect harmony. As soon as you arrive you smell the fresh clean air and feel the stress melt away and time seems to slow down a bit. We always return to the city with renewed spirits after visiting.
We had a blast here! Thanks for hosting us. The house is beautiful! Very memorable trip with lots of giggles and inside jokes!
Nothing but fond memories of the house and of the area! Loved the fact that it was kid-friendly - everything our 3 year old needed and more. On our next visit to the area, we'll definitely stay at Sarah's house again.
Two middle aged couples who wanted to relax on the water were sorely disappointed on arrival.
Place was small, dingy and not well appointed. The TV did not get reception.
The two bedrooms were separated by a wall so thin you would probably hear the other couple breathing.
The worst thing was supposed water access was quite unacceptable. A steep long ladder went to a 3 x 4 foot patch of mud. Water entry would have been challenging at best and dangerous at worst. No dock as pictured.
After one look we called the owners and told them we could not stay. No refund.
Avoid this property.
Our young family had a wonderful time staying here for the weekend. The house feels as bohemian as The Grove, resting under majestic redwoods and a magical twilight with twinkling lights from nearby houses and soft murmurs from nearby neighbors. The serenity of the house's ambience is the best way to spend a weekend away from the city and bond with loved ones. The surrounding area offers the most fun family activities from great food, hiking in Armstrong Woods, visits to local farms, and of course Russian River. We will most certainly be back.
We enjoyed our pre-Thanksgiving stay in Sarah's lovely cottage. Every morning we awoke to the majesty of the towering redwoods right off the deck. Enough light gets in due to the southern exposure to the river. The Russian River area can be very shady in places. Even though you can literally walk to Guerneville for a bite or an errand, the cottage itself is very tranquil. You do have neighbors, but you hardly notice them.
The cottage itself is very charming. The redwood siding takes you back to the days of summer cottages yore. The interior is decorated in bright colors with simple and contemporary sensibility that does not detract from the rustic environs. Sarah has everything very well appointed with everything you need. She leaves a nice folder with extensive details about the cottage and the area. If live television is your thing, make sure you have your cable company password to check in on your shows or the news over the internet. The three bedrooms are adequate in size. That is the nature of cottage life. You don't go there to sit in your bedroom.
It was a perfect base for us to explore the Dry Creek Valley and Russian River wine regions as well as an afternoon in Jenner and Bodega Bay. Be sure to check out the Armstrong Redwoods State Park down the road even for just a short walk or drive. We did have dinner in Healdsburg one night which is about 30 minutes away, but a dark ride home in November. We also dropped in at the casual, delicious Boon Eat + Drink in town one evening. Another night we prepared dinner in the cottage.
We rented this cottage with a couple of families while the kids were off school for a week. From the minute we reserved, the owner was very responsive and helpful. For instance, she double checked that we were okay with only one bathroom for 7 people and gave us the option to cancel if we thought that would be an issue. When we checked in, we had trouble with accessing the downstairs and there weren't enough sheets. A couple of texts exchanged with the owner and these problems were resolved. After that it was smooth sailing. The kitchen had everything we needed. We had a nice paddle on the river with the Kayaks. The kids built dams across Austin creek (a few minutes drive away), which was reduced to a trickle. We played the board games, the kids played with the toy bowling set, and Netflix worked as expected. We wouldn't hesitate to stay at Lucky Bend again if we decide to vacation in the area.
Located on the Russian River where you can enjoy lounging on the nearby beaches in Guerneville (1 mile) and Monte Rio (3 miles), kayaking & canoeing. Enjoy all levels of hiking at Armstrong Woods State Natural Reserve (5 miles). Goat Rock State Beach is under 30 minutes away in Jenner, with surreal rock formations, beautiful sand and active wildlife. The local area is a bustling wine region where you can enjoy wine tasting and find all varietals from Chardonnay to Pinot Noir & Zinfandel. Microbrew enthusiasts can enjoy several breweries in Guerneville and nearby towns. Northwood Golf Course (2 miles) is a 9 hole course in a spectacular redwood forest at a reasonable price. Be sure to try the Ramos Fizz at the club house!
