Why Melissa Freeman chose Scotland

The cottage has wonderful views of the bay and hills that you can sit and look at all day or, if you prefer, go out and get into it! It has all the benefits of being away from it all but is only 5 minutes walk from the village. It also has lovely restaurants and shops within walking distance. We loved it from the moment we saw it and still do.

What makes this cottage unique

The lovely, uninterupted views are our favourite thing about the cottage. We love the fact that it's old and part of Arran's heritage and the added bonus that it can easily absorb so many people, making it perfect for family holidays.

Brilliant house!!

  • 5 of 5

This is a brilliant house for a large party. Big enough to find a quiet space if needed. Stunning views, within walking distance of the shops and a stone's throw from the ferry. Best beds ever!!

We will do our best to return. Linda Smith et al

Amazing house with all home comforts

  • 5 of 5

I hired this house for my husband's birthday. He's an Arran fan and hiking enthusiast. The house was perfect. Near enough to the ferry that you don't need a car and the view means you don't feel you have to explore the outdoors if the weather is wild. You can see it all from the sofa!! The beds are super comfy and the linen really decent (The White Company or similar) - a particular bugbear if mine with rental houses is cheap bobbly linen. Big enough for 10 people without getting in each other's toes I'd say. Brilliant for dinner parties. All in all I wish I owned this house!!!!

Exactly what we needed

  • 5 of 5

Our international group of 9, mainly golfers, first stayed here 2 years ago, and repeated the experience this year. The cottage is exactly as described, and was perfect for us, and an ideal base from which to tackle Arran's 7 golf courses! Bedrooms & beds were comfortable and all in effect en-suite. Lounge was comfortable and along with the dine-in kitchen a great space for the whole group to spend time together. We cooked for 9 most evenings, which was fine, and once for 11 (which was do-able, if a little cramped at the table).

Garden was lovely on the few occasions we could sit there without getting rained on! Wi-fi was fine. Didn't use the barbie this time (rain stopped play!)

Owner Melissa was very easy to deal with and suggested several of her competitors' places when we were initially looking for a place for 12 people - but when 3 dropped out we immediately reverted to Strathwhillan Cottage - and glad we did. Hope to be back some day!

Stunning!

  • 5 of 5

We have recently returned from a week in this stunning cottage. We were a family party of 9, spanning 4 generations, plus chocolate labrador, arriving from 4 different locations, and we knew from the website that the house would be right for us. What we had not foreseen was just how thoughtfully all our requests (eg cot and high-chair, and the need for possible wheelchair access etc) were responded to, and how personally we were provided for. We had expected a lovely cottage with good views, but had never imagined that we would wake up every morning to the drama of the changing landscape across the bay, as Goat Fell and the other peaks and glens were either bathed in sunshine, hidden in the mist or capped with snow. We are no strangers to Arran (this was our eighth visit), but we felt we saw a different side to the island this time. The walks and views in the Clauchland hills above the cottage were breathtaking, and at the same time the shops of Brodick were only a five minute walk for those who wished for a bit of civilisation. The cottage itself is light and bright inside, generously equipped and tastefully decorated with beautiful local art and craftwork, and the garden is delightful. We LOVED this place, and will definitely be back.

Thank you.

Location, Views and Casual Charm

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is located within an easy walk of both the ferry and the shops & restaurants of Brodick. But it sits on a quiet side-street. So it is removed from any vehicular or pedestrian traffic. It is a calming retreat, but close-by to activities--the best of both worlds.

The windows of the sitting room frame a picture-perfect view across a lovely garden and out towards the sea and Goatfell. I spent hours nestled in one of the comfy sitting-room couches reading and watching the scene change. When I think of Arran, I think of the view from these windows.

The cottage itself is thoughtfully laid out and well-equipped. The beds and linens get 10/10 for comfort. The furnishings aren't luxurious, but feel casual and comfortable--like a worn-in pair of blue jeans.

We loved Arran, and we loved this cottage. We hope to return next summer; and we would recommend this cottage, without reservation, to friends and family.

Excellent place to stay on Arran

  • 5 of 5

This cottage is a unique property with wonderful views of the sea and mountains from the glass fronted main living area.

Walking distance from the ferry port was a real boon as it enabled many people in my party to arrive by public transport, (rather than car), keeping hire car and motoring costs down, and made my life as organiser much easier.

The owner has clearly given much thought to what people might need during their stay.

-The kitchen has everything I can think of that might be needed

-Utility room with drying rack and hooks can be used for wet gear.

-Bedroom arrangement where 4 of the rooms can be ordered to be arranged as doubles or twins makes it ideal for a large family holiday or for club groups golfing, walking, climbing etc.

-Additional space available for storing bicycles, golf clubs etc was very useful.

Space and comfort is generally what makes the cottage such a winner. The design of the living areas was such that our group of 10 could all eat together and relax together, yet there's enough space for people to do their own thing too.

Excellent value for a group or large family.

The beach, bicycle hire, banks, bars, tennis courts, golf course, kayaking, powerboating, fishing are all within walking distance. The cottage has five bedrooms, four of which are ensuite, a family bathroom, (making a total of five bathrooms including one with assisted disabled access) a television room (with freesat and DVD) with log burning stove, large open plan sitting/dining room with huge windows and stunning views, WiFi,well equipped dining kitchen, and utility with washing machine and dryer. Easy access to many walks, and to seven golf courses within 20 minutes drive. Pony trekking, ancient monuments including Brodick Castle (visible from the cottage) are nearby.

Other Activities: Powerboating, canyoning, kayaking, pony trekking and other sports with Arran Adventure Company

Golf: There are 7 golf courses on Arran - all with spectacular views. You can buy an Arran golf pass which covers 6 of the 7 courses. In 2010 it cost £110 and was valid for 12 months.
