About Tom Funk
I'm a 5th generation native Washingtonian, with over thirty years of experience managing my own properties. I love to travel, read and dine in the numerous good restaurants in D.C. At home, I enjoy celebrating holidays, birthdays and special occasions with friends and family. I have a real sense of 'home' and have tried to incorporate that at toms bnb. At my day job, I work as a hair colorist in a Georgetown salon. I've been a hairdresser for 36 years, and have served as hair stylist to many in the fields of politics, entertainment and media, including 25 foreign first ladies visiting the White House. Since 2002 I have worked mainly as a hair color specialist. My travels: I've seen a lot of Europe and the U.S., a bit of Asia, Mexico, Scandinavia and the Caribbean. Most of my trips in recent years are self-guided culinary tours. I am an accomplished cook and have studied in-country, the cuisines of France, Thailand, Vietnam and India. I collect cook books, and after all I've learned, most of the dishes I like to cook are found in "The Joy of Cooking". You will find that book at toms bnb, along with a fairly well equipped kitchen. I love to read historical novels, biographies, the memoirs of people I admire, and fiction. I enjoy attending writer's workshops, literary festivals and book events sponsored by the celebrated Politics and Prose book store here in D.C. I am working on a novel.
Tom Funk purchased this Apartment in 1998
Why Tom Funk chose Northwest Washington
Washington, D.C. is my home town. The first time I looked at this house I fell in love with it and purchased it. Built just after the civil war in the 1860's, it typifies 19th century Victorian architecture and has its own unique history. It's a large and grand home with 12-foot ceilings, a fireplace in every room and many of the original features, such as heart-pine floors, pocket doors dividing the two parlors that comprise the main first floor rooms and 52 stairs leading to second and third floors. There are, of course, many things that still need to be fixed and restored, and upkeep is constant. The part of the home you will occupy during your stay was the original kitchen, at the basement level. I demolished and rebuilt it as a cozy, modern apartment that is independent of the rest of the house with its own entrances, kitchen, bath and washer/dryer. At the time I bought the home, the neighborhood was marginalized by crime, poverty and prostitution--the legacy of the riots of 1968 after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. After years of rebuilding, the area has become a destination for city living, shopping, dining and nightlife.
What makes this Apartment unique
Among the unique benefits of this property are its location two blocks from the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, and its convenient proximity to many of the city's museums, sight-seeing, shopping and dining destinations. If you don't like to walk, there are bike rentals (a Capital Bikeshare rack is right across the street), Zipcars (hourly car rental, 800 feet away), and Uber and Lyft will quickly and easily take you anywhere you want to go in the city. The apartment is well equipped for making your own meals, there are many good restaurants within walking distance, and lots of restaurants will deliver a delicious hot meal right to your door.

Great place to relax after a big day sightseeing
The apartment was really well set up and close by for groceries and restaurants. Short walk to metro. Tom was great with responses to our queries. Overall, we would definitely recommend.
My husband and I really enjoyed staying here. The location was perfect - we parked our car and walked everywhere. The space was intelligently laid out and had all the right amenities. It was remarkably clean - I expected a few bugs, as a basement apartment, but I didn't see a single insect inside.
I didn't realize before we got there that it was a basement unit and it made me feel a bit claustrophobic, but that had nothing to do with the unit itself. Also, there's a door in the bedroom that leads to the outside and is duct-taped in an unlocked position. That made us a little nervous, but we never had an issue.
Even given the above, we wouldn't hesitate to rent the space again and whole-heartedly recommend it to others.
I recently stayed in Tom’s property with my 2 teen boys for a week of sightseeing! The property was perfect for us!
The apartment had everything we needed, it was clean, in a fantastic area of town and a relaxing place to unwind each night.
Can’t wait to come back!
Perfect DC rental!
I was in town for a work conference. Tom's rental was the perfect location for walking the short distance to the Renaissance each day and for exploring the area during my down time. The rental is as explained and had everything we needed and more. It was comfortable, clean and well-equipped. DC is hot in the summer but the space was cool being on the basement level. The AC helped take the edge off. Plenty of electrical outlets, linens, fully-equipped kitchen, space to relax and work, cute outdoor garden courtyard space, comfortable bed and bedding, little street noise, safe neighborhood, washer and dryer was a plus!
We walked to the rental from Union Station...25ish minutes but doable. Tom made "check in" a breeze and made great suggestions for places to eat. Our favorite dinner was at the Dabney and we had a fun night of jazz music at JoJo's. All within walking distance. We Ubered to the National Art Gallery on the Mall the morning we checked out only because it was raining but we were prepared to walk even with our luggage...again, a doable 25ish minute walk. We then walked from the museum to Union Station. Took about 20 minutes.
I would stay at Tom's rental again!
Immaculate and comfortable
Tom's place was just about perfect for a DC trip consisting of convention/writing/sightseeing. The location is superb - many walkable destinations and close proximity to the Metro. The property is exemplary in terms of combining many amenities without feeling cluttered at all. Well done, Tom! Instructions were clear and thorough. I hope to visit again.
Summer trip with family
The property is clean and the host is helpful. We used uber and walked a lot. Grocery store nearby. Good restaurants nearby as well. Some street traffic and noise but not critical to our stay. We enjoyed the Apt. and everything was there to make our stay easy and enjoyable. Would stay again if in DC.
