This property is owned by two brothers who have lived in the Engelhard area and Hyde County all their lives. They are from a third generation commercial fishing family. They presently own a fish house business which buys local seafood. They have owned this property for several years and decided to build this lodge to give others the opportunity to come and enjoy the same area they have enjoyed all their life.
Karen Meekins purchased this lodge in 2012
This area offers such great outdoor activities. We have lived here all our lives and know this is truly paradise for us. The outdoor opportunities are endless.
This property just offers the best access to the Pamlico Sound in the Hyde County area and a great way to take life easy.
We stayed at this property with our two young children (6 & 2) for a week and didn't want to leave. We saw pelicans & eagles catching fish, and two dolphins that swam in the bay every morning. We caught rock bass, blue crab, and a growler? I think that's what it was called. The place is quiet and secluded but has a grocery store, car wash, and a few small restaurants that had great food. We drove to the Outer Banks four times that week and the drive was just under an hour but nice. We were used to it by the second time. Just watch out for black bear when driving back to your cabin. The mosquitos weren't bad at all but there were large biting flies so bring your OFF. The cabin was spotless and very cozy. We had everything we needed when we arrived other than our groceries for the week. We loved the screened in porch and the swing under the cabin in the parking area. The owners went above & beyond with their hospitality & we were treated like family not guests.
We had a great time there. The accommodations were beautiful, and we had a nice screened in porch. The view was great and the owners warm and friendly. The town and people I met there were special. I definitely plan to go back.
This was a nice property that exceeded our expectations. The house was nice and it was enjoyable siting in the screened in porch during the evenings eating as the sun went down. We made the drive to the Outer Banks a couple times. It was a very easy drive (~45 minutes) with no traffic and beautiful views along the way. We utilized one of the numerous Outer Banks beach access locations with free parking and a bathhouse. The owner was attentive and checked in with us regularly. They were only a text and a few minutes drive away if we needed anything, but we didn't need anything the whole stay. We'd absolutely come back again.
My family and I spent 4 days at the Hyde County Lodges in March of this year. The lodges are spectacular on the inside, no detail has been over looked. The view from the porch is absolutely beautiful. If you are looking for a quite secluded get away this is the place for you. The town is small but you are only a little over an hour away from the Outer Banks if you want to have a tourist type of day. The owners were on site to help with anything we needed. If you are looking for the hustle and bustle of a city this isn't the place for you. But if you are looking for a place to drop a fishing line in the water, sit back with a good book and watch the sunset then this place should be on your list.
My husband and I spent three nights at the lodge in February for a long weekend getaway. We chose it because it was close to the Lake Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Reserve and we wanted to photograph birds and other wildlife. Nature and the weather cooperated and we found many wonderful photo opportunities! The surrounding area is beautiful! The lodge was very comfortable to come back to (and very clean too); Karen and Dell were friendly and inviting. We hope to return again--my husband wants to do some fishing on our next trip. I have already recommended Hyde County Lodges to other photographers in my Camera Club. A group of us are currently trying to coordinate a springtime trip in May, so I WILL be back soon!
My brother and I are recently retired and we were looking for a peaceful three trip.
We were particularly interested in discovering more about fishing the Pamlico Sound.
I can wholeheartedly attest that our stay at Hyde County Lodges was completely satisfying and memorable. The owners, Dale and Karen, are such quality individuals that we quickly made friends. They are a special couple and made sure that we had every possible need met to make our trip great. Our experience was so terrific that we signed up on the spot for a week next year.
