We have a wonderful, unique home with tons of character and all modern conveniences. Recently renovated, it was originally built in 1945 by our aunt, Barbara Comfort, an artist who was a legendary figure in Southern Vermont and is still fondly remembered. She built a rustic country home with a modern feel.
There are huge sliding glass doors in the living room, which provide lots of sunlight and spectacular views of the Green Mountains. Barn wood covers the interior walls and a huge wood burning stone fireplace warms the open space. The house was featured on the cover of American Home magazine in 1949. The home has now been completely renovated with all modern conveniences while still retaining a charming country feel. The house is fully furnished and well decorated with many of our aunt's paintings.
The house has two bedrooms, one with a queen-sized bed, and the other with two twin beds and its own gas fireplace. The living room couches double as beds and can sleep two.
The kitchen and bath have new amenities including dishwasher and washer/dryer. The kitchen is comfortable and open with a window seat in front of the large windows.
TV and DVD player are in the second bedroom for entertainment without the noise of cable TV. There is wireless internet if you bring your own laptop.
The house sits on 12 acres of lush woods and a large lawn with a small pond.
There is a screen porch for summer dining and a stone patio with an outdoor grill overlooking the mountains. In the winter, the mudroom can store skis and snowboards.
If you're looking for a picturesque country home with a real house feel, this is the place for you.
Hi there! My name is Claire and I manage renting my family's house along with my brother, Gardiner.
Claire Comfort purchased this house in 2012
Its a perfect house for an extended stay or a cozy weekend getaway!
Our house has outstanding views, original stone fireplace, barn wood floors, floor-to-ceiling glass windows and gorgeous midcentury furnishings. Our great Aunt built this house in 1944 and it is as stunning as when she built it. We've recently renovated the kitchen, bedrooms and bathroom and added wireless, making it as comfortable and cozy as possible.
Sweet and charming in gorgeous Landgrove, VT. Great sloping lot for kids to play.
I spent six wonderful weeks in the Comfort cabin in the heart of winter and can’t recommend it highly enough. I went in order to do some writing in a winter wonderland and can’t imagine another place that would have been better suited. The well-appointed house is full of charm and character -- the spirit of Barbara “Bobby” Comfort infuses the space, thanks in part to her artwork (and locally set murder mysteries!) that line the walls (and bookshelves) – and manages to offer real rustic beauty without any sacrifice by way or modern comforts or amenities. The view from the cabin (birches, firs, and a frozen pond in the foreground, framed by mountains and a sprawling forest) made for an inspiring start to each day, and the stone fireplace stole the show in the evenings.
The immediate vicinity has plenty to offer – including ample trails for snowshoeing and crosscountry skiing, an inn/restaurant down the road for dinner or drinks, and a locally sourced butcher and (gourmet) general store in the next towns over – and if cabin fever ever strikes there are plenty of charming Vermont towns of varying sizes within reach. Claire and Gardiner were very friendly, helpful and responsive throughout my stay. I recommend enthusiastically and hope I have an opportunity to return!
We could not have been happier staying at the Gardiner Comfort home. Perched at the top of a lovely meadow, in a timeless and charming town, this home felt like a true "homecoming" The house is historic and modern both - furnished with lovely and interesting furniture and artwork, and a well equipped kitchen. Each night we cooked and ate on the screened inn porch and then watched the stars come out (and fall!) in the dark skies. By day we adventured - climbing Bromley, exploring the nearby towns of Weston and Grafton and swimming in the refreshing waters of Hapgood Pond. Claire is an extremely kind, responsive host and we are already dreaming of our return - and of telling friends of this wonderful place to relax and savor the beauty of Vermont!
The house is full of character in a beautiful quiet wooded location and was the perfect place for our family of four to spend Christmas. The bedrooms are very comfortable and the beautiful kitchen is very well-appointed so we had everything we needed. The house has a selection of board games and books, and is well-heated (it was too warm outside for us to use the fireplace). It did not snow for us, but this could have been a blessing since the last mile or so of the drive is on unpaved roads. The location is excellent for exploring southern Vermont. We loved this house and highly recommend it for a New England retreat.
We had a wonderful experience staying at the Comfort house this fall (Oct. 2015). The home is cozy, quiet and clean. We immediately felt "at home" when we arrived, and very grateful to have found such a lovely vacation retreat. The home is nicely secluded and the views of the mountains are stunning. The owners are very easy to coordinate with and accommodating. We're looking forward to staying there again.
We stayed at the Comfort house in July 2015. It exceeded our expectations. It's a really nice example of mid-century modernist design with key features from the original construction intact as well as recent tasteful updates. We were looking for a place that was not the ordinary rental, remote enough to relax, and close enough to culture and restaurants to easily reach them -- this house had it all. The owners are a pleasure to deal with and the setting is incredibly relaxing. We highly recommend the house. And as other reviewers have said, don't miss the 'scrapbook' left by the original owner detailing a fascinating life as an artist and entrepreneur in NYC and VT.
Landgrove is a bucolic, classically beautiful country town with dirt roads, old barns and horses and cows grazing in the meadows. It is adjacent to the Green Mountain National Forest and is a perfect getaway for a weekend, week, or long term visit.
Winter visitors may take advantage of nearby Stratton, Bromley, and Magic Ski Mountains, which all had a tremendous snowfall this year. Each has outstanding downhill skiing, plus Bromley has summer alpine sliding.
There are numerous cross country ski centers, including Wild Wings, which has 24 k of trails, Viking, which has 35 K, and our friends at the Landgrove Inn, who have 11 K of beautiful farm trails. There are also miles of public use cross country trails just down the hill from the house in the National Forest.
The Landgrove Inn also offers horse drawn sleigh rides through the snow, and is a wonderful place to have a romantic dinner or drink by the fire. Our friends and inn owners, Tom and Maureen will take great care of you!
Fall in Vermont has its own majestic appeal. Leaf peepers will be thrilled by the variety of colors everywhere you look. Beech, maple, pine and other old trees provide a beautiful backdrop to this country setting.
Warm weather activities include mountain biking, road biking, golf, swimming, fishing, hiking, or simply strolling in nature.
Nearby towns provide interesting activities. Just over the hill, historic Weston has a renowned Regional Theater that always has a fun season of plays and musicals. There are also many galleries, antique shops, and, of course, the famous Vermont Country Store where one can sample delicious local cheeses, snacks, and other delightful Vermont foods that are all for sale.
Taylor Farms is one of many local dairy farms that produces delicious raw milk gouda cheese. You can walk around their farm and say hello to their animals.
Our friends Bob and Anne tap maple trees for maple syrup and sell it from their home in Landgrove Village. They're happy to show you around and, if you come at the right time in spring, you can even take part in the sugaring process! No trip to Vermont is complete without bringing home some pure maple syrup.
There are so many things to do in the Landgrove area and our house has so much character that you'll feel that you're a local resident.
