2 bedroom, 1 bath, vacation house near skiing, hiking, and Cross Country
We have a wonderful, unique and historic home with tons of character and modern conveniences (wifi, renovated bathroom and kitchen, dishwasher, washing machine). Recently renovated, it was originally built in 1945 by our aunt, Barbara Comfort, an artist who was a legendary figure in Southern Vermont and is still fondly remembered. She built a rustic home with a modern feel.
There are huge sliding glass doors in the living room, which provide lots of sunlight and spectacular views of the Green Mountains. Barn wood covers the interior walls and a huge wood burning stone fireplace warms the open space. The house was featured on the cover of American Home magazine in 1949. The home has now been completely renovated with all modern conveniences while still retaining a original design. The house is fully furnished and well decorated with many of our aunt's paintings.
The house has two bedrooms, one with a queen-sized bed, and the other with two twin beds and its own gas fireplace. The living room couches double as beds (although they are simply cut foam, not actual mattresses. Please keep this in mind if you have a larger group.)
The kitchen and bath have new amenities including dishwasher and washer/dryer. The kitchen is comfortable and open with a window seat in front of the large windows.
TV and DVD player are in the second bedroom for entertainment without the noise of cable TV. There is wireless internet.
The house sits on 12 acres of lush woods and a large lawn with a tiny pond.
There is a screen porch for summer dining and a stone patio with an outdoor grill overlooking the mountains. In the winter, the mudroom can store skis and snowboards.
If you're looking for a picturesque getaway with a real house feel, this is the place for you.

About Claire Comfort
Hi there! My name is Claire and I manage my family's property along with my brother, Gardiner.
Claire Comfort purchased this House in 2012
Why Claire Comfort chose Landgrove
It's a perfect house for an extended stay or a cozy weekend getaway! Our guests usually return for second and third stays after discovering our special spot in southern Vermont.
What makes this House unique
Outstanding views, original stone fireplace, barn wood floors, floor-to-ceiling glass windows, and gorgeous midcentury furnishings. Our great Aunt built this house in 1944 and it is as stunning as when she built it. We've recently renovated the kitchen, bedrooms and bathroom and added wireless internet, making it as comfortable and cozy as possible.

From the minute I walked in the door my family was completely relaxed and comfortable. We only left during the day to ski and our nights were spent cooking and hanging out by the fire. Every detail is perfect. The paintings, history, property, beds, kitchen, bath.....AMAZING!!! We look forward to coming back every season.
Spent a few days here for skiing in February 2018. Perfectly situated between Stratton Mountain and Okemo. Skied by day and came home to enjoy a log fire and Scrabble. Perfect!
full of personality, and that’s not a euphemism
This is what mid-century modern looks like with reclaimed barn wood, a beautiful mountain view, and a young woman artist in the late 1940s who seems like (magazine cover aside) she was not trying to impress anyone when she had a house built for her here. Her scrapbook/autobiography is a highlight of the house, now rented to guests by her niece and nephew. But her spirit also remains in this gorgeous but unassuming house (updated since the 40s! with a second gas fireplace in the second bedroom; washer and dryer; etc), which has everything you need for a ski vacation or a weekend of curling up by a fire. We’ve stayed twice now and each time Claire has been easy to work with; and immediately responsive and helpful with issues like a shortage of dry wood or a power outage in the area. In February we have rented AWD or 4WD vehicles to replace our urban compact car for the week—warm days in February can create the earliest part of what Vermonters call “mud season”—which is more spectacularly muddy later in the spring as the snow all melts. Would recommend coming in from the direction of the town of Landgrove as opposed to from Weston —the road in is a lot more muddy from the north than from the south. Mud and all, though, we love the Comfort house. Other notes: it’s about 25 minutes from there to Okemo, which is where we’ve skiied while there; and there are plenty of things to do and appreciate in this part of Vermont if the weather turns against skiing. But most of all, holing up in the cottage and making a fire and cooking a meal with their ample kitchen supplies, is probably attraction enough.
My husband and I stayed at this beautiful home in February. The home is perfect in every way. We could not have asked for a better experience.
immaculate, spacious, beautifully furnished and appointed
we were stunned to see how beautiful the house was -- and the generosity with which the owners open it to strangers. It is gorgeous in every aspect with a comfortable and spacious layout and has the best furnished kitchen I have ever seen. Every piece of crockery, every picture, each piece of furniture is a treasure. There is a good large working fireplace, ample wood supply, and the views are stunning.
Wonderful, one-of a kind retreat
My husband, daughter and I spent eleven wonderful days at Claire’s place over the holidays. The cabin feels like the ideal artist’s retreat, with a warm, earthy living space graced by a beautiful fireplace and giant picture windows with a view of the mountains beyond. The kitchen is modern and well equipped and the bedrooms are clean and comfortable. We couldn’t have asked for a better place to stay. We will definitely be coming back!
Landgrove is a bucolic, classically beautiful country town with dirt roads, old barns and horses and cows grazing in the meadows. It is adjacent to the Green Mountain National Forest and is a perfect getaway for a weekend, week, or long term visit. Winter visitors may take advantage of nearby Stratton, Bromley, and Magic Ski Mountains, which all had a tremendous snowfall this year. Each has outstanding downhill skiing, plus Bromley has summer alpine sliding. There are numerous cross country ski centers, including Wild Wings, which has 24 k of trails, Viking, which has 35 K, and our friends at the Landgrove Inn, who have 11 K of beautiful farm trails. There are also miles of public use cross country trails just down the hill from the house in the National Forest. The Landgrove Inn also offers horse drawn sleigh rides through the snow, and is a wonderful place to have a romantic dinner or drink by the fire. Our friends and inn owners, Tom and Maureen will take great care of you! Fall in Vermont has its own majestic appeal. Leaf peepers will be thrilled by the variety of colors everywhere you look. Beech, maple, pine and other old trees provide a beautiful backdrop to this country setting. Warm weather activities include mountain biking, road biking, golf, swimming, fishing, hiking, or simply strolling in nature. Nearby towns provide interesting activities. Just over the hill, historic Weston has a renowned Regional Theater that always has a fun season of plays and musicals. There are also many galleries, antique shops, and, of course, the famous Vermont Country Store where one can sample delicious local cheeses, snacks, and other delightful Vermont foods that are all for sale. Taylor Farms is one of many local dairy farms that produces delicious raw milk gouda cheese. You can walk around their farm and say hello to their animals. Our friends Bob and Anne tap maple trees for maple syrup and sell it from their home in Landgrove Village. They're happy to show you around and, if you come at the right time in spring, you can even take part in the sugaring process! No trip to Vermont is complete without bringing home some pure maple syrup. There are so many things to do in the Landgrove area and our house has so much character that you'll feel that you're a local resident.
