Family stay in Southfield

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 8 enjoyed our stay at the Historic McDonnell House. We found the beds to be very comfortable and the house has lots of character. There was plenty of room for all of us, including a comfy back screened in porch. The kitchen was spacious and the bathrooms were as well. This property is exactly as it appears in the VRBO listings. The location is within walking distance to anything you would need. Very nice neighborhoods to walk through just one street over. We will definitely stay here for our next family gathering.

Four stars for sure.

We were out-of-towers in for a family funeral. The house had an old farmhouse charm and comfort level that fit our needs.

Surrounding area was a noisy commercial area and several things about the house were disappointing.

  • 2 of 5

The alarm system sensor beeped 3 times whenever it sensed motion on the sun porch. The kitchen didn’t have many plates or glasses. The oven was not standard size. The beds were small. The floors were creaky. The air conditioner didn’t adequately cool the house. Screens were missing so windows couldn’t be opened to cool the property. The price was too high for the quality and location.

Owner's Response: Hi Susan - thank you for taking the time to leave this review. We're sorry to hear that your time in this home fell short of expectations. While none of these items - especially the alarm, bed size, and kitchen furnishings - has ever been a concern for past guests, we appreciate your feedback. The alarm you mentioned is a safety mechanism to alert residents whenever someone enters or leaves the property. The homeowner has let us know that the home is adequately equipped with dishes, silverware, and cookware for the number of guests the home can accommodate. The oven is apartment size but we apologize if this caused you any inconvenience. The beds are also the standard sizes as described but we're sorry if they felt smaller than what you are used to. We are sorry if the creaking floors - the original floors made from trees on the land - were not to your liking. The homeowners recently repainted the exterior so they will double check to ensure that the window screens are still in place following that process. The home was built circa 1850, and most guests who enjoy this home do so for a love of history and historic old homes, and we are sorry that it was disappointing to you. Thank you again for your feedback. Best, the Evolve Team
