About Delana Thomsen

My late husband and I purchased this property as a vacation home 12 years ago. We closed on Valentine's Day 2005. I got married late in life, at age 50, my first marriage, his second. We are both professional classical musicians. This property was a special retreat from the city for us where we could unwind, relax and practice our musical instruments in peaceful surroundings. Since his death 2 years ago I've tried to think of ways for extra income. A friend suggested Home Away.

Delana Thomsen purchased this house in 2005

Why Delana Thomsen chose Copake

We wanted a place that was close enough to the city that we could easily get away for a couple days per week. I had spent some time in this area in years past, so we began our search in Columbia County. It was the third house we saw. We loved the name of the road, which has a bit of local history from an 1812 War battle, plus that the railroad tracks used to run in back of the property. A former owner used to come up every weekend on the train, and talk the conductor into slowing down so he could hop off right at the base of the driveway! The catcher for us was that there is a private room with a private entrance where I could have my piano studio; and my husband could have his bassoon studio in the back bedroom on the second floor. We never had a lot of money to upgrade the place, but enjoyed the quirkiness of the uneven floors, the 1791 cellar that is carved-out-with-a-spoon (one of the original sections of the house, and originally outside) and of course the beautiful grounds that are totally in nature, yet close proximity to the road, and very near Hudson and Gt. Barrington where live all amenities.

What makes this house unique

This property, as we were told, had always been a family home. It's very comfortable. There's room for privacy, and room to come together. There's a peacefulness to the property that I have always found comforting.

In the old days there used to be an artisan well in the backyard. The pond was put in before we bought it. The cattails have currently claimed it, but in April when all the frogs return it is the most sublime cacophony of sound all night long!

I love looking out onto the field across the way in the morning light, seeing the starry sky so clearly in the back yard at night, and catching glimpses of wildlife enjoy the property as well: bunnies, turkeys, and occasional deer, especially to feed at the apple tree.

I hope you will enjoy your visit to "our" home as much as we have and embrace it's uniqueness, warmth, and charm.

Owner's Response: It was wonderful having you stay Ira!!! You were terrific and thoughtful guests and I enjoyed meeting you very much!! And I was so pleased that you chose our home as your vacation retreat. But, I’m wondering why I did not get a 5-star review if you had such a good visit at my home? I’m used to grading being a teacher, and I rather give the benefit of the doubt. I do describe the house as bare bones and simple. It took my cleaning lady 4+ hours to clean after your stay, which is probably normal for a 2-week visit. It would have taken me 6 hours, and it was certainly more than the 3 hours which I charge for cleaning. It’s just a question. And it puzzles me, and makes me question if it’s really worth it to rent out my home. Is this about the 2 mice you saw? If you hadn’t noticed from my horrified expression: I was horrified!!!!!!!!! That has NEVER happened to me in the 13 years we have had the house. And I’m traveling up there special today to meet my exterminator for an extra treatment. I am responsible. I am thoughtful. I want people who stay in my house to feel comfortable. But it’s not a hotel. It’s my house. And it’s my thoughts. Delana

old farmhouse with all of the comforts of home

  • 4 of 5

My family and I needed a place to stay for a hockey tournament. This was perfect for us. The wood burner was Fantastic and the beds were comfortable. Everything you need to cook a meal is in the kitchen (except the food, of course) the market is about 5 min away. This was perfect for us.

The cons:

Remember you are in an old farmhouse. There are creaks and drafts and critters outside. The water pressure is low but not terrible. And the shower head is low, so my 6 ft son had to bend to get his head under the shower .

Overall this is a great place to stay.

Nice old charming house

  • 5 of 5

we liked the house very much, specially the old charm. Delana was very easy to communicate. Lots of antique things in the house. Everything was in place. Beds were really comfortable, bathroom were clean. Living room and dining room was perfect for our group. Though we didn't like the muddy smell (Delana explained the reason), but it will go away after spending 30min into the house.
