About Steve powell

Great memories should be shared! Steve and Joy Powell believe that children are the future and nothing is more important than giving children a solid foundation and making memories that last a lifetime. It is their vision to give others a beautiful relaxed setting to make memories with those they care about.

Steve powell purchased this lodge in 2010

Why Steve powell chose Asheville Area

We experience 4 seasons that offer an array of activities all year round. Guest will be in close proximity to skiing, golfing, rafting, tubing, zip-lines, National Forest, orchards, horseback riding, The Biltmore Estate, Western NC Nature Center, Dollywood, Gray Fossil Museum, Christmas tree farms, natural hot springs, gem mining as well as every luxury a city offers; shopping, dining, theaters. The lodges are well planned to allow privacy and safety. There is plenty of driveway parking and there are no steep drops or stilts like most mountain cabins.

What makes this lodge unique

The owners, Steve and Joy Powell, live on Memory Mountain and offer tours of their farm to interested guest, however appointments must be made in advance. Their farm features rabbits, range chickens, pheasants, quail, egg gathering, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, apple/peach/pear trees. Their Antique Museum has the largest arrowhead collection in the Southeast. You may view depression glass, farm equipment and neat historical mountain finds. Arrowhead hunts may also be coordinated with your scheduled visit.

The lodges feature many unique charms such as wormy chestnut logs and wood, arrowheads found on the grounds, nooks for children to explore, private outdoor fire pits and plenty of gathering space indoors and out. A great deal of time has been spent collecting local reclaimed wood to build Memory Mountains' cabins and it shows.

Beautiful property in a tranquil setting. By far, our family's favorite vacation! The kindness and generosity of Steve Powell and his family truly made us feel welcome and made our vacation extra special! Our kids are already asking if we can go back every year!

Owner's Response: As a business person I alway want to be honest. My business plan is simple get the kids to have fun and enjoy there vacation and the parents will have to bring them back. (Ha ha) Memory Mountain is a special place peaceful and quiet. Fishing is great. Lobo our Wolf has more friends than I ever had. When I go to meet our guest with Lobo they come running out just to bypass me and hung Lobo. My wife Joy and her family work hard to have all houses clean and they do a great job. The ground and the best yet and getting better. 200 acreas is a lot of land. The real key to our success is families come here we treat them good but the families are very nice. The families we have Had understand what we are doing here at Memory Mountain. Thanksto this family who was second to none. Thank you.

A piece of Heaven here on earth

  • 5 of 5

AMAZING PLACE TO STAY! Every other year we have a sibling reunion, as we come from all over the USA. ( NC,SC,NY,CO,CA,AZ,TN) This year we found the Waterfall Lodge on Memory Mountain in Mars Hill, NC. What an absolutely amazing place. The property owner Steve Powell was extremely kind and helpful before, during, and after our trip. He gave us a tour of the property, which was breathtaking. There were 13 adults staying at Waterfall Lodge, and it had everything we needed from beginning to end. We enjoyed fishing in the ponds, feeding the ducks, hiking, and gathering around the firepit for coffee in the mornings. Myself as well as my 7 siblings and their spouses were extremely satisfied with our stay. We highly recommend staying at Waterfall Lodge, and look very forward to returning here again for future reunions. Its a special place, and you can absolutely feel the presence of God as you explore the property. Thanks so much to the Powells for sharing their little piece of Heaven on earth with us, we were truly blessed by our visit!

We just spent an amazing 4 days Memory Mountain At Wolf Laurel.

  • 5 of 5

We just spent an amazing 4 days Memory Mountain At Wolf Laurel. Our group consisted of four families with kids from 4-16 and everyone had something to do that they enjoyed including fishing, swimming, hiking, exploring, camp fire, flower picking, salamander hunting, star gazing and even hanging out with a wolf(thanks Lobo). The property and homes are amazing. Steve and his family are delightful. Location is perfect. This is a must for family trips!

Owner's Response: We have built a special place here at Memory Mountain but the thing that makes us successful is the great people that keep coming here. Do we want kids here??? you bet this is the place for kids to come. Can you put several families in our homes??? you bet they sleep 12 to 18 people and we want you to get your money's worth. We have a hidden room no parents allowed. We have a Harry Potter bedroom. We have fishing, hikes, chapel, and so much more. We have 47% repeat business. Come visit us and make new friends.

Great house for large families

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed the cabin and the property! There were enough beds and rooms for all of us (4 families) and the home is big enough to give everyone some space during the day. Our teenager claimed the secret loft for themself which worked out well. The outside porches were very nice for relaxing, listening to the waterfall, and feeling the cool mountain breeze. Wifi worked fine for all of us, even on the porches and out by the fire pit. The kitchen is well-equipped and we cooked dinners at the cabin every evening. The gas grill was awesome for steaks. The kids caught fish in the pond every day. Steve and his family are good people. They were around enough to take care of any minor issues or questions, but not intrusive. Steve gave us rides in his off-road vehicle and we met Lobo the wolf a couple times. I think Steve's granddaughter brought us fresh farm eggs one day.

This property is less than an hour to Spruce Pine and activities such as gem mining. The kids also went swimming at nearby Wolf resort. Here are some of the other places our families experienced during our visit and would recommend: Asheville, Hot Springs, Burnsville, and Mt. Mitchell. The trailhead of the Appalachian Trail at the Tennessee border is only a few miles away.

Owner's Response: Having 4 families come and be comfortable is a huge task. Memory Mountain has many cabins and this one is a very nice one. Your family was great we enjoyed you Guys very much. There were 4 generations and Granddad was great. We will continue to improve here at Memory Mountain but these great reviews tells the story for us. Thank for all your kid words. We look forward to your return.
