About Gaylynn and Mike

We moved to the NoVA area in 1996 when Mike obtained a position at Mobil Oil and then later at Versar, Inc.

Gaylynn worked as a Transportation Planner for both the County of Fairfax and VDOT. Loving the outdoors, and peacefulness, Gaylynn saw the vision of Cardinal Cabin as our family retreat. Many family weekends were spent recreating and relaxing with our young children and friends!

Gaylynn and Mike purchased this cabin in 2008

Why Gaylynn and Mike chose Luray

Having the opportunity for hiking the Shenandoahs--it's dense cover and blue hue gently etched on your mind. And lazy days on the river or sitting in the screen porch. Fall colors were not to be missed! This Cabin had the perfect location for both hiking and river fun, as well as quiet and cozy to enjoy in all seasons.

What makes this cabin unique

We loved the property not only for its' mountain and river benefits but the fact that it was only 90 minutes from Northern Virginia and easily within reach for weekend retreating. The over-size screened in porch beckoned lazy afternoons and evenings; the wood burning stove cozy winters...

The Town of Luray is truly something special.

Folks are amazing, friendly, laid back, and helpful. The Town is fun to explore: Hawksbill a lovely, leisurely walk or bike ride into Town. We love Lurays' hometown May celebrations and 4th of July fireworks!!

Nice place, perfect location for our trip

  • 4 of 5

My wife and I really enjoyed our stay. I was worried not having wifi in the mountains would be a problem, but cell signal was great so we didn't have to stress about not being reachable. The cabin was about 15 minutes from the Kennedy Peak Trailhead which was a great hike with a beautiful view. I would have given 5 stars, but I was really looking forward to relaxing on the screened in porch, but there was no furniture out there.

Owner's Response: Hi Patrick, glad you and yours enjoyed our location and had a good trip! I'm sorry, we only had chairs out on the screen porch at this time; we have to wait about a month to move the cushioned furniture outside, until after the pine tree bloomout --when everything is covered in yellow dust! That's life in the Shenandoahs! There are also folding snack tables and two red camp chairs stored in the Master Bedroom closet that are for guest use on the porch. A patio table and chairs was on order, but unfortunately did not arrive for your visit; it will be set up soon, (along with the cushion chairs and settee). Hoping you'll come back in warmer months to enjoy the screen porch in its' finest hour :-)

Perfect and Cozy!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time at Cardinal Cabin! Just a short drive from the main Luray attractions and the cabin was a perfect size for our family of four. Included a great selection of movies which we all enjoyed. We would go back in a heartbeat! Thank you!

Quiet remote getaway

  • 5 of 5

The remote location meant nature sounds were abundant. The limited light pollution meant ample stars to gaze on a clear night. Close enough to go into town for dinner but remote enough that the only people I saw were the neighbors (from a distance). House had everything we needed & porch was amazing to sip warm coffe in the morning and a cool beverage when warming in the sun.

Private cabin close to Luray

  • 4 of 5

The cabin is very nice, it's tucked back off a dead end road among other primary homes. You have neighbors, but We never actually saw them...the freezing weather may have had something to do with that though. Cabin is well equipped, offers a comfy king bed - which is hard to find! One thing to mention is the lack of WiFi or cable, we were fine knowing this before our trip as its listed in the description, but, it was in the teens all week-we couldn't spend much time outside and with a 2 yr old, that made things quite difficult. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and considering renting again in the summer!

Comfortable, spacious, private, beautiful, perfectly located.

  • 5 of 5

Our stay for the Christmas holiday couldn't have been any better. The cabin is tucked away on the massanutten range, so close to so many great hikes, the luray caverns and the Shenandoah/skyline drive. The cabin was spacious and comfortable, we were able to cook a feast within the kitchen. We were looking for a nice retreat and on such short notice this cabin delivered. Some of the most beautiful scenery surrounds this area and the cabin was an extension and reflection of that. Very accommodating to our two dogs making it a perfect family retreat.
