About Ray & Ann Converse
We have been married 38 years and have 3 adult children and 4 grandsons. We've been coming to this area since we married and honeymooned in the Smokies. Moving to the Smoky Mountains 4 years ago was a dream of ours and we always hated leaving when we'd travel. We enjoyed the mountains and activities so much that we finally made the move and have no regrets. We want others to enjoy their stay in the mountains as much as we always have. Our three adult children and four grandsons. All love visiting and exploring in the mountains. We do quite a bit of fishing and hiking with the boys, but they absolutely love tubing down Deep Creek. Whitewater rafting is one of our favorites and we recently went ziplining for the first time and will definitely do it again soon.
Ray & Ann Converse purchased this House in 2017
Why Ray & Ann Converse chose Almond
We built this vacation rental for others to discover nature, the mountains and just relax. We are located only 3 miles from Tsali for mountain biking, hiking and boating. Nantahala is only 4 miles for hiking, swimming, Whitewater rating, ziplining, kayaking, canoeing and The Rivers Edge restaurant. Bryson City is a quick 10 miles for shopping, hiking, tubing, swimming and picnics at Deep Creek, and discovering three beautiful waterfalls. The Great Smoky Mountain Railroad offers different excursions during the year, but The Polar Express is a must with children. The Road to Nowhere is also in Bryson; great for hiking and horseback riding. Cherokee offers shopping, restaurants and Harrah's Casino, which is about 20 minutes up the road. There is a lot of history in Cherokee. Waynesville is a great city to visit with unique ships in the historic downtown district and also antiques. Waynesville is about a 40 mile ride. We want your stay to be enjoyable and will do all we can to accomplish a great visit.
What makes this House unique
We chose to build this vacation home on our property for others to enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and serenity the mountains have to offer. You will never sleep better than in the mountains. Bonfires at night are a great way to enjoy each other's company, ghost stories and don't forget the s'mores. The home is secluded and you will feel like you're the only ones in the world while enjoying all the comforts of home.

Felt like home. Great location.
Very new house. Quiet. We stayed July 4th weekend. Felt like we were home and had everything we needed. Great decor. Property is close to several boat launches and river accesses. Bryson City is a few mins away. We would highly recommend.
A great family get away!
The cabin was perfect for a family getaway! We LOVED the firepit area and all the the amenities provided. It is clean, exactly as provided, and has lots of space both indoors and out. The homeowners are very kind helpful as well!
Beautiful, cozy mountain home
My family of four, as well as both my mom and my mother-in-law, stayed in Retreat in the Smokies over the Thanksgiving holiday. We truly felt as if we were staying with family. Ray and Ann provided everything you could think of, including shampoo, soap, paper towels, toilet paper, dishwashing supplies, etc. I've never before stayed in a rental that was so accommodating or so homey. The home is immaculate (and we are very picky!), the kitchen is well stocked, and the furniture is beautiful and comfortable and cozy.
We used the firepit two nights and enjoyed being at the top of the mountain where we could see the stars and the moon. We stayed indoors two nights and took advantage of the many games that were provided.
The home is situated perfectly to hike and explore the North Carolina side of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It is also close to so many cute mountain towns, including Bryson City, Dillsboro, Silva, Maggie Valley. For anyone visiting at this time of year, don't miss going to Bryson City to see the families enjoying the Polar Express. It is magical to see the children (and adults!) dressed in their pajamas to go visit Santa.
If you are looking for a perfect vacation getaway, look no further. You will not be disappointed! We will definitely stay here again!
We just had a wonderful time. The cabin (more like a house) is absolutely amazing. Everything you think of was provided.
We will be back.
We get excited when people have thoroughly enjoyed their stay. We would love to have you return in the future. Every season has different adventures to explore and we are avaliable all year. The fall leaves are really starting to pop the last few days with the cooler weather and now is such a great time for hiking. Hope to see you soon.
Great place for your holiday!!!
I super love this house! This house located in the center of the park and surrounding by trees. It has decent decoration and fully types of cooking equipment. You can BBQ or watch the stars at the backyard in the night. Every bedroom has a comfortable bed and bathroom served with commodities. Also, the households are very nice people. I will choose this place next time to Smoky Mountain.
We are so glad you enjoyed your stay in our secluded and private home. It is very quiet and we've always said you're best night's sleep is in the mountains. Please return in the future. We'd love to have you.
Lovely home with all the necessities!
This house was perfect for a quick get away to the mountains. Ray & Ann were nice and easy to work with. This like new home had everything you could possibly need - beach towels, bug spray, flashlights, fire starter log, games for the kids, detergent, soap, - I could go on and on. We loved having s'mores by the fire and chilling in the comfortable den. The beds were super cozy & comfy!
The house's location is a short drive to the NOC/Nantahala River outpost and about 15 minutes to Bryson City.
As other guest mentioned, I suggest getting there before dark especially the first night. It is a steep, gravel driveway up to the home. We played all day and did not make it back before dark.
Great place! Would definitely rent again!
We appreciate you choosing to stay with us and would welcome you back any time. We hope you enjoyed your Whitewater rating trips and hope you return in the future as there are so many adventures in the mountains. Most mountain roads are gravel unless you're on the main roads, and we're fortunate to have a 12 foot+ wide road but if it's definitely dark in the mountains after the sun sets. Thank you for taking care of our home as if it were your own. Great guests who are welcome in the future.
