About Mary & Stephen Bauer
We designed and built Mountainaire out of a desire to create a simple, yet elegant escape from the city. Our work life and home life have always centered around making things of beauty and this project was deeply personal. We are so pleased with the results of this cabin and are thrilled to be able to share it.
Mary & Stephen Bauer purchased this Cabin in 2007
Why Mary & Stephen Bauer chose Slanesville
We fell in love with the peaceful energy this property offered. Our boys were little and we really wanted to offer them a place where the simple life could be had, a place to unplug and catch fireflies, roast marshmallows, and play board games. Maybe we were trying to recapture our childhood, too. And, we wanted a place big enough where we could have lots of friends and family.

Perfect Weekend Getaway!
We loved our stay and truly did not want it to end! The home is so relaxing and loved the modern touches throughout! We would be so excited to stay here again and truly thank Stephen and Mary for being amazing hosts:)
This place is really incredible. Stephen and Mary did such a nice job with the detail work inside and out as far as decor and thoughtful use of the spaces with architectural touches. It seemed as though they thought of everything as far as all the modern amenities and things you would need for a weekend getaway. The property and waterfront is fantastic as well. We couldn’t have asked for more and we will certainly be back! Stephen was communicative throughout the process and the weekend and even went so far as to leave a birthday gift for my wife before we arrived! This place is special!
Breath of fresh air!
The owners were amazing! They knew it was my daughter’s 13th birthday and made it very special! The house was stunning and we loved the history behind it. They made everything very easy and it was so relaxing! It was so quiet and peaceful! We are thankful for such a wonderful vacation!
Wander where the WiFi is weak
We stayed at Mountainaire for a winter weekend getaway with 2 other couples. The cabin exceeded all our expectations and the owners are super easy to work with. The cabin is impeccably designed and no detail is overlooked. The owners put a lot of thought into the home making it hard to feel like you are in a rental property at all. It has everything; plush bed linens, lots of soft fluffy towels, towels for the spa, high end cookware, loads of firewood, indulgent bathroom toiletries, basic cleaning supplies, and much more. Not to mention all the home amenities like multiple fireplaces, camp fire, hot tub/spa, beautiful river and grounds, a tree house. The WiFi may be weak but that’s what we came here for. Our biggest dilemma was deciding which fire to roast s’mores over! Hiking Ice Mountain was amazing - such a beautiful/unique place even in the winter months. We’re thinking of returning in the summer to take full advantage of everything this property has to offer.
Even better than we had hoped!
We were a group of 8 looking for a relaxing NYE weekend getaway, and this rustic but luxurious cabin ended up being perfect for us! It is even more beautiful than the pictures let on, if you can believe that. The interior design is amazing - every item in the cabin fits with the rustic chic theme, and there are so many thoughtful touches - from the soft cozy blankets everywhere for curling up on sofas, to the luxurious steam shower in the master bathroom, the comfortable beds and bedding, fireplaces galore (two indoor, two outdoor, and a fire pit back by the ricer), beach towels at the ready on the porch for enjoying the hot tub, lovely sparkling lights lining the wraparound porch and gracing the mantel and staircase (giving it a holiday feel) - we could go on and on. The bedrooms were all well appointed and comfortable, and all of the bathrooms felt modern and luxurious. There was no cell service, but the WiFi worked fine for what we needed (it was nice to disconnect a bit, and when we wanted to watch a movie on the projector screen we just had everyone put their phones on airplane mode and that allowed us to stream fairly well). We appreciated the board games available, and also really enjoyed the pool table and dart board. We also had one particularly nice day where we were able to sit outside around the gas fireplace table after going on a hike up the mountain, and that was lovely -- the outside living areas at this cabin are great, and there's almost as much outdoor living space as indoor (we want to go back in the summer so we can fully enjoy it!). The owners are very pleasant and easy to get in touch with, and gave us all of the information we needed to enjoy our stay. We were particularly impressed by the welcome gift they left us, with a hand-written note -- very thoughtful. Highly recommend this property to anyone looking for a relaxing escape from city life.
Outstanding Luxury Country Home with all the bells and whistles!
We have never been to West Virginia and our family always wanted to visit for Thanksgiving week. When we started searching through the pages this home stood out among all the rest with the rustic meets luxury feel. It truly met all our expectations with spending quality time with our family. The children were able play in the tree house and walk to the river. So many amenities to list and we also enjoyed both inside/outside fireplaces roasting marshmallows. This is the perfect home for making memories and can't wait to return!
