Alternate Latitude is an award-winning 44 foot Voyage Catamaran and Captain Chuck has been sailing for over 20 years. Alternate Latitude has been carefully outfitted with a fresh & comfortable exterior & interior, with navigational equipment & other electronics, cushions & linens, stereo (MP3’s – yes!) and electric heads (toilets) in all bathrooms. You will experience the security of a qualified Captain, local knowledge and flair on a comfortable & beautiful sailing vessel.
Alternate Latitude offers 3 queen staterooms, each with own bathroom. The boat comes outfitted with toys aplenty, with 2 stand-up paddle boards, snorkel equipment for the whole gang, floaties and 13' inflatable dingy. Travel to multiple Caribbean islands via your own personal charter & visit coves & islands that you couldn’t easily get to if you stayed in a hotel without paying for all the extra travel costs (ferries, taxis, etc.).
Wake up to a breakfast then either jump in the sea for a refreshing swim/snorkel or take a hike on the trails that lead you to historical spots complete with amazing views. The afternoon is a perfect time for a nap in the shade or chasing turtles on one of the stand-up paddle boards. Wind up the day with a little happy hour before dinner under the stars or opt for the delicious local West Indian fare at places such as Foxy’s or The Bitter End.
Alternate Latitude offers premium captain-only charters as well as half-board & all-inclusive charters:
For the Captain only option, your captain will take care of sailing the boat and will arrange an itinerary with you that meet your requirements taking into account weather, feasibility etc. You will be responsible for provisioning, cooking and cleaning, although the captain can make a few dinners for you. It’s a way to save money on your charter and experience a relaxed, casual sailing vacation. All toys and amenities included, so you enjoy the comfort and amenities of a crewed yacht without the expense of gourmet cuisine or the limitation of dining on board. Extra costs on Captain only charters are provisions (food and drinks) for your group and the captain, fuel, ice, local permits, customs & immigration, mooring balls & gratuities – basically anything but the boat & captain/crew.
Captain Only: per week: 1-6 pax
We provide the cleaning (dishes, galley, daily bathroom cleaning, etc.)
$7000 + expenses
Captain Only Deluxe including expenses (customs fees, mooring fees, fuel, ice) = $8000, with the same clean-up service from your captain.

Chuck Welsh joins the Alternate Latitude team as captain for the fall 2016/2017 season. A native of the Flora-Bama Gulf Coast, and life long mariner, Chuck first arrived on St Thomas for a port call in 1991, while serving aboard the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga. Chuck was the Small Boats and Lifeboat Rescue Officer aboard "Sara" for four years, serving in the Gulf War and numerous deployments in the Mediterranean and Caribbean, and yes, he did "Drive the Saratoga". After his tour of service with the Navy was complete, Chuck returned to the Virgin Islands in the late 1990's and has been a regular charter captain in the area ever since.
Steve Schlosser purchased this yacht in 2011
In addition to the Virgin Islands, Chuck has captained charters in the Bahamas and the Florida Keys, and also delivered sailing yachts as far as Ecuador, through the Panama Canal. He says that a trip through the Canal on a small yacht should be on everyone's "bucket list". Chuck holds a 100 Ton U.S. Coast Guard Master's Credential and is certified STCW 95. While always aware of the splendors of the Virgin Islands and all of the amazing things they provide for the enjoyment of his guests, your safety always is his first priority, and he takes that to heart
One of Chuck's unique efforts is that he strives to be informed of all events taking place in the USVI and BVI at any given time, always informing guests of any special local happening that may be taking place on a particular island, in the event they should wish to attend.
Steve, Thanks so much for the Great trip. We all enjoyed it but James had a blast getting to sail with you. I can't think of anything I can recommend to make what you do any better. Having chartered with 4 other Cats in the past, I really think your talents as a sailor and Captain combined with the fact that Alternate Latitude is certainly a beautiful, comfortable and capable cruiser with a wonderful back story, will make a terrific charter for anyone either a novice or seasoned cruiser.
The destinations and routes were well thought out to accommodate my wife's desire for smooth sailing and anchorages and my Sons desire to sail. When Deb comes in to round our your crew, I'm sure things will get even better!
Thanks again for the fun and memorable vacation. We look forward to sailing with you again next Spring, as we discussed.
We knew we were in good hands from the second we contacted Steve and Deb about celebrating our marriage aboard the Alternate Latitude. They were very receptive to all of our questions and made sure they knew our preferences before the trip - from food to drink to activities we were interested in, they thought of everything. We arrived at the airport and met our driver (arranged by Steve and Deb) who took us to the marina. A bottle of chilled Veuve Clicquot was waiting for us to help us relax and start the celebration. From there it was just perfection. All the food, expertly prepared for us by Deb, was fresh and delicious. Prosecco, red and white wine, and rum drinks (the Mango Sunrise - we nicknamed it "Deb's Mango Madness" - it was amazing!) were all available to us day for night. Little touches like flowers and an itinerary for the day written on the chalk board in the cabin were much appreciated. We were taken to Jost Van Dyke, St. John, and Virgin Gorda just to name a few stops on our journey. Snorkeling equipment was available for us as was an underwater camera! We just downloaded the pictures to our laptop before we disembarked and we took them home (Steve offered to also upload them to a Dropbox account for us). The multi-colored tropical fish, the coral, and the reefs were all amazing - like swimming in a tropical aquarium! For the nights we didn't have the pleasure of Deb's cooking on the boat (we opted to eat off the boat a few nights), we were brought ashore to eat at local restaurants (reservations made in advance for us by Steve and Deb). Nights were spent chatting with Deb and Steve (they are both very knowledgable about the Virgin Islands and sailing) and then lying out on the front of the catamaran staring up at the beautiful starry sky. The cabins were comfortable - air conditioning was available but we never needed to have it turned on - the breeze flowing through the cabin with the open hatch was plenty to keep us cool throughout the night. Steve and Deb gave us our privacy but were always available to answer questions. We had a magical honeymoon - all thanks to the hospitality of Steve and Deb aboard the Alternate Latitude. We cannot recommend this enough - whether it be for a family vacation (the boat sleeps 6 guests) or a romantic week for a special occasion - you will have an amazing time!
Where to begin? If I could give this vacation 10 stars, I would. We had high expectations for this vacation, and Steve and Deb far exceeded all of them. We apparently had "bad weather" (which is definitely relative) because there was a lot of wind and the seas were kind of high, but our fearless Captain was able to roll with the punches and plan our itinerary as necessary each day to mitigate the impact of the weather. We had some exciting, fast sailing with the high winds, but Steve never failed to find wonderfully protected areas for snorkeling, lunch, and overnight anchorages where the water was calm. Deb is a magician in the galley. I have no idea how she puts together such fresh, delicious, and abundant meals and snacks with the space constraints of the boat, but our bellies and taste buds were very grateful for her talents. She also kept the boat immaculately clean all the time, which was also pretty magical because we never really saw her cleaning! In addition to their formal "jobs" on the boat, Steve and Deb were wonderful tour guides and great friends. We really just enjoyed spending time with them. It was like going on vacation with friends, except I don't have any other friends who wait on me hand and foot and don't allow me to clear my own dishes. Ha! Steve and Deb took all of our preferences and even off-hand comments very seriously and really went above and beyond to make sure we had the time of our lives. They were extremely professional but also warm and welcoming, and we were so fortunate to be able to hang out with them for the week. As Deb said, we've found our home in the Virgin Islands and can't wait to go back!
HIGHLY RECOMMEND this vacation and this crew! We definitely had a great time, and Steve and Deb were a big reason why. We were 4 women, celebrating one of us surviving breast cancer for 10 years, and we were a little high maintenance on the food front: one vegetarian, one gluten free, one low carb, and one who won't eat cilantro. Deb took it all in stride and made some AWESOME meals for us. She focuses on organic, local ingredients, and you can taste it! It was so good we begged for recipes and have tried a few at home.
We told Steve that what we really wanted was good snorkeling, and so he took us to some EXCELLENT spots. We snorkeled two or three times a day, and had a great time. He picked routes so we could see a lot of different things, and still get to sites fast and spend most of our time in the water. When it got windy and wavy, he found us coves where it was easier to snorkel. And when we got out of the water, they had drinks waiting for us - girly, beach drinks, just as we requested.
They are great people, and we had a great time. The ship was extremely well maintained, and they take care of it very lovingly. Great crew, great ship, great snorkeling, great friends. What more could you ask for?
We had a great week sailing aboard Alternate Latitude in the beautiful Virgin Islands. Steve and Deb are a delightful couple and a highly professional crew. They made us feel like we were sailing with good friends, taking care of everything we needed with pleasant enthusiasm. Chef Deb prepared wonderful, healthful meals and Captain Steve found us the best snorkeling spots, anchorages, and sailing routes. Great trip!
Did NOT want to come home! My girlfriends and I wanted to go have some fun, explore, relax and laugh. We had no clue how perfect this would end up being. Deb and Steve are a great pair! Deb is an expert in the kitchen (the food was just what we wanted and perfectly prepared). She anticipated our every need. Steve made us feel safe and was so helpful and knowledgeable. The boat was appointed nicely and there was nothing we went without! Fun to wake every day with the chalkboard listing our adventures for the day ahead. We found new friends with these two! Already planning a next adventure with Alternate Latitude! Thank you Deb and Steve!!!
WOW! We are a family of 6, the youngest (twins) are 17, 22, and 24 year olds. This was the best experience and vacation we have ever had (and we've done some great things). Let me start with the accommodations ~ the boat is top notch and decorating from the bedrooms to the living space is bright, lively, and comfortable. Captain Steve showed us some amazing snorkeling spots and also some fun "on land" spots. Every morning Steve and Deb would share with us the plan for the day, and when ready, Steve would set sail. He's a great sailor and has a lot of fun. Deb, Chef extraordinaire, cooked the most amazing meals, three times a day. We were never hungry, or thirsty (she makes great drinks too). Often on trips, we constantly plan on where we will eat and work around everyones food moods and diets ~ we didn't have that worry on the boat as everyone was happy with the food preparation (in fact, we took a picture of every meal). Deb and Steve are the most wonderful people ~ they let us have all the family time we wanted (and at first we were just our family), but by the end of the trip we wanted them hanging out with us sharing their stories, music, and fun! They are truly awesome and made the trip memorable for all of us! We were all so sad to leave! We hope to make a trip again!
