Caught traveling this weekend (March 8-12)? Same day move-in available for the big storm, turn a travel nightmare into a vacation!
Welcome to Hemlock Harbor, our family home on Cayuga Lake now open for guest stays in all seasons! We are serious about hospitality, and work very hard to earn a 5-star review from all of our guests. Although we only arrange guest stays through Homeaway and its affiliates, please know that you can see many more pictures of our home at hemlockharbor dot com.
Originally designed as a summer cottage by Ithaca architect Robert Tallman in the 1950's, the same architect later radically expanded the home for year-round living, giving the place an elegant architectural flair and updated style.
Sited in a prestigious neighborhood along the Scenic Route 89, the Redwood and Cedar house is cantilevered over the Westshore cliff with expansive foliage and lake views, and the entryway seems to reach for the sky. Inside the house, the feeling is one of nature and water, with an airy sense of floating above the lake.
The property is over two acres with 450 feet of lake frontage, including multiple walk-out beach areas for swimming and boating. The house is surrounded with decks and patios on three sides, including the master bedroom’s floating deck above the cliff. A myriad of sliding glass doors and ultra-efficient fiberglass framed windows bring the feeling of the forest of Hemlock, Spruce, Maple, and Oak trees into the home, while providing expansive lake views.
The inside of the home is decorated with themes of fine wood and nautical life. The two floors are connected by a beautiful Oak flying spiral staircase. The four bedrooms are fully equipped with modern beds and all linens are provided.
From the Ample parking area at the road, the driveway curves gently past a large carport down to another parking area at the house, with space for three cars. From there an expansive deck bends around one of our great trees leading to the leaded-glass entry doors. An outside stairway leads to the patio on the lower level, where you can enter the house through one of the many glass doors. Both entries give you a moment to gaze at the lake, and take a breath of fresh air from the many tall trees that surround the South lawn and give the home privacy.
From the house, you can walk hand-in-hand down the wide railroad tie stairway to the beach, stopping at one of several landings with benches to enjoy the view, if desired. The stairs are lined with planters, which in season display a variety of woodland plants and flowers.
At the beach, you’ll find a massive barbecue with a four foot long stainless steel grill rack. There is a picnic table, and patio area for cooking and eating. Walk out on the yacht size dock with swim ladder, and enjoy the views far up and down the lake. If you have a boat, you can dock it here for your stay, or even drop the massive anchor (currently sitting on the beach) off shore for longer stays.
Walk along the coves, enjoying the endless supply of skipping stones, each one flatter and more perfect than the last. Take a piece of the ever-changing supply of driftwood that washes ashore as a souvenir!
We share Hemlock Harbor with a variety of wildlife including lots of deer, chipmunks, seagulls, ducks, geese, and a blue heron who lives on the beach. Please do not disturb the blue heron while he or she enjoys the daily sunset, that is part of his or her routine.
Back in the house you can cook a delicious dinner in the gourmet kitchen, then enjoy the provided piano and guitar. Or use the high-speed Internet with your favorite devices. Finally, drift off to sleep in comfortable beds as the nightly downdraft draws fresh evening air from the forest through the house.

About Steve Moraff
I am Steve, the son of the owners of this house. I manage guest stays and we have a local manager, Thomas, who looks after this home and our downtown Ithaca apartments. Thomas and I work very hard to earn your appreciation and to provide 5-star quality vacation service to our guests. This home has been in my family for several decades, and we have expanded, renovated, and improved the house a few times. Now we have set it up for our own large extended family to have family vacations, and you can too! I am a customer-service oriented person as well as a family guy. I am a programmer, but these days I am mainly a stay-at-home Dad. Note the pictures of my 4 years enjoying the home during our last visit!
Steve Moraff purchased this House in 1979
Why Steve Moraff chose Trumansburg
Hemlock Harbor is a single-family home on 2+ acres on Cayuga Lake. The property is a unique one, with over 400 feet of lake frontage and a couple of walk-out beaches. A small gorge runs through the property. The house is perched on top of the cliff, with the master bedroom out over the edge of the cliff.
What makes this House unique
Sleeping in the master bedroom is an experience, with so much light, forest, sky and water views. Enjoy the location, near wineries, walking distance to Taughanock Park, and enjoy the lake!

Great house, great location, great price, great owner.
5 couples, all in our early 30's.
The house is fully renovated. The furniture looked new, nicely decorated, with large windows and great views. Everything you could possibly need was provided, and the water front setup was the perfect compliment.
Our guest loved the location, being near the Taughannock Falls/State Park, Ithaca Brewery, Sheldrake Winery, Glenwood Pines (great burger), and 15 minutes from Wegmans; we were able to showcase and experience a lot in just two days.
This place was worth every dollar and more. Do not let the affordable price scare you.
The owner was quick to respond to my Emails, with full answers. He also returned our security deposit the same night we departed.
Overall: This house was the perfect venue for a great weekend. We are already discussing renting it again.
Thanks, Jason, for taking the time to make such a thoughtful review.
I really appreciate you pointing out that the low price should not scare people away. This house is owned by my father, and he and I have always disliked anything that is overpriced. We work very hard to keep our price not only competitive, but realistic in terms of keeping the house occupied and enjoyed all throughout the year.
It is true that other houses charge much more than we do, often for much less. However, they are also empty a lot of the time. Our pricing is designed to provide value, not to kill our competitors or maximize profits.
So thanks again for providing prospective future guests with this valuable information!
Awesome place to stay.
What a great place to stay. We came for a weekend of wine tasting and to relax with friends. The house is secluded with great views. We enjoyed the living room/ kitchen and patio area. The house was stocked with essentials, which you don't see to often. The windows in the master bedroom made the room. Loved that the water was steps away.
Only wish they had a bathroom with shower in the downstairs, and they would upgrade the mattresses in the bedrooms, they have seen better days.
Overall we enjoyed our stay and are planning to make this a annual trip, and look forward to staying here again.
Have to throw a shout out to Tom, who made sure our check-in was seemless, and explained everything we needed to know, thanks Tom!
I wouldn't hestitate to rent this beautiful home if your thinking about it!
Effortless check-in. Stocked fridge. Charming house.
Interaction with the owner was easy and pleasant. House was well equipped and stocked. Entirely pleasant experience.
Ideal lake house stay
The house was better than possibly expected when we arrived and we recommend others to enjoy the house as we did. Seven of us stayed including two young children and a teenager all of whom thoroughly enjoyed their stay even though the weather was very cold and snowy at times but this didn't stop us going down the steps to the lakeside and having a fire outside one night. Despite the cold weather the house was very comfortable and warm at all times and had all the necessary items to enjoy our stay including a large tv and excellent washing machine and drier. Parking outside was easy and off the road for the two cars our party had. Views from the bedroom and sitting room across the lake were fabulous. We were left alone by Thomas Ward, the manager, but communication with him by phone was easy when required. The house was very well equipped with all necessary items including a fridge/freezer with an ice making facility and a dishwasher. We have already recommended the property to friends and would recommend to anybody who are looking for a quiet place to stay.
Beautiful and private lakefront home
I stayed here in a large group (8 people) and there was plenty of space for everyone (as long as you are comfortable sharing beds!). The house is far away from any neighbors, giving you the feeling of being in the wilderness next to beautiful cayuga lake. There is also a small creek flowing on the side of the property, adding the music of water to your time outside. Given that we visited in the cold spring, we did not spend much time outdoors but even just walking down to the dock was a wonderful experience! The stairs are fairly steep and there are many, but as long as you go slowly there is no concern of falling since they were not slippery.
Inside the house, the master bedroom is incredible. With windows on three sides with panoramic views of the lake, you can watch the sunrise over the hills from the comfort of your bed. The room is spacious, and also includes a love seat sofa and private bathroom. Also upstairs are three other rooms, which are decently smaller and have less impressive (but still nice) views.
Downstairs in the living area is the kitchen, dining room table, and living room. This was a very comfortable space, but sadly there is no bathroom downstairs. You must walk upstairs to use one of the two restrooms and the stair case can be a little nerve wracking if you are uncomfortable with heights (it is very creaky and a little bit wobbly spiral staircase down).
Overall, my experience staying in this house was very positive. The owner and keeper of the grounds was very responsive to concerns and very helpful and flexible. On our last night there the power went out due to high winds, and they were nothing but kind in their efforts to help, even offering to come down to turn on the wood burning stove for us to stay warm. Unfortunately since there was also no water available during the power outage, we ended up leaving a night early. It was hard to say goodbye to such a beautiful home.
Away from it all but only 15 minutes from Ithaca~
Don't be discouraged by the looks of a long walkway into the home, it was a Very short distance. They make sure we had everything we needed, we brought milk, eggs, garlic, coffee.. but those things were already there for us as well as heavy cream and ketchup... even a couple chocolate bars the kids ate right up. It was beautiful, the views were absolutely stunning...ah those sunrises every morning. We would definitely recommend this home to anyone traveling in the area. 5 Stars~
